Travis Kroells

The waking nightmare part 2...

The waking nightmare part 2...Kroells’s logs

“Wake up.”  Travis was once again on the bridge where this had all started.  Every time this same exact thing happened.  Travis had enough.  “What is this place?”  “Who’s doing this!?!  Help me!”  The world instantly went blank and then shown to Travis again.  He was in a pure white…so white in fact that if there were any walls and doors he wouldn’t have been able to find them.  He slowly turned in a large circle to familiarize himself with his new surroundings.  He had almost turned full circle when he saw the mysterious figure in the captain’s uniform. Travis ran towards him but he never appeared to get any closer to him.

“Who are you?!  What are you doing here?!  Answer me!!!”  The laws of nature seemed to respond to his demand as the mysterious figure appeared right in front of him making Travis use all of his balance to keep from tumbling over.  The figure slowly raised his head so that Travis could see his face.  He looked exactly like him!  His face had shown the signs of age but it was as clear as day that this man could easily pass for his twin.

“You know your so stubborn Travis.  Just like I used to be.”  “Who are you and what are you doing here?”  Travis demanded for the second time.  “Well I can’t answer your first question but as to your second one it’s quite obvious.”  Travis’s face changed from one of extreme frustration to one of extreme confusion.  “I’m you.  In a manner of speaking.  Think of me more of a possible you.”  “What do you mean possible me?”  “Well I’m the you who would have obeyed Commander Ridire’s order back on Heratio V.”  “So that’s the only thing that sets us apart.  The fact that I ignored Ridire’s order?  That’s what sets us apart?”

“Oh no Travis this is only the tip of the iceberg.  I’m the you that you want to be.  The person who always follows orders, always has the right plan, always has a clean record, and most importantly the one who has the friends.”  “You think we’re so different I’ve had plans before I’ve made some right choices.”  “Ha you say that now but wait another ten years or so.  Like I said Travis this is only the beginning for you.  Let me ask you this question.  When was the last time you didn’t resort to alcohol to get rid of your trouble?  When was the last time you actually relised something that happened in this universe wasn’t your fault?  That’s your problem Travis…you think the entire universe revolves around you.  When something goes good you were the cause of it…and when something goes wrong its all your fault.”  “So what take a look at what happened on our last mission it was my fault!”  “One mire incident.”

“When was the last time you didn’t take credit for something that happened on the ship?”  “Were all a team every one helps out on something!”  “Don’t be an idiot you know what I mean.”  Travis began to walk away in a fury of anger and rage.  “I don’t have to take this!”  The older version of him self once again appeared in front of him.  “But you do.  Why else would you be here?  To hear a pep talk from an older you?”   Travis tried once again to walk away until the older one grabbed him by the shoulders and held him steady.  “Why do you have to be so stubborn?  Don’t you realize how many people out want to help you want to be your friend?  Why can’t you just open your miserable heart once in your life and experience friendship!?”  “Because!  Because every time I do something happens, something always goes wrong, some one always gets hurt!”  “You moron that’s what being a human is!  Your cant always have the perfect friendships or relationships something will go wrong its human nature to make mistakes!”  Travis was thrown to the ground by the older self.  The room began to fade out of existence and he saw himself disappear.  The older Kroells’s voice now echoed through out his mind.  “I finally know what makes us two so different.  You’re afraid to be human.”

Travis opened his eyes to find himself once again on the bridge but this time back in Fred’s chair where this had all started.  He briefly glanced around to see ensign clueless sitting at the ops station going through what appeared to be status reports.  Travis turned to face and address him as the ensign heard Travis stir and turned his chair to face him.  “Where have you been ensign?”  “Excuse me sir?  I’ve been on the bridge the entire time since you were given command of the bridge.”  “So you didn’t leave to get some report?”  “No sir I would have needed your permission and you fell asleep a few minutes after ensign Goad left the bridge.”  Travis sat for a few minutes pondering what he had just been through.  After he relised the ensign was still waiting for a reply he cleared his throat.  “Ah yes thank you ensign you may return to your previous work.”  “Aye sir.”

Travis leaned back into the chair again going over what had just happened.  Was that version of himself really right?  Was he truly just afraid of being hurt?  No that couldn’t be…he had to prove himself wrong.  This was a new beginning.  One Travis knew he couldn’t possibly fail at.

Uh, "Captain Kroells", you might start by not falling asleep when you have the bridge.   :)
