Scramjet reaches Mach 10

LOS ANGELES Nov 16, 2004 — A tiny unmanned NASA "scramjet" soared over the Pacific Ocean Tuesday to demonstrate a radical new engine technology by attempting to fly at a record speed of about 7,000 mph, almost 10 times the speed of sound.

The 12-foot-long X-43A supersonic combustion ramjet flew under its own power at Mach 10 for about 10 seconds after separating from a booster rocket at 110,000 feet.

For more on this story, follow the link to the abcnews site and AP story. Scramjet reachs Mach 10

The key thing.....Besides possible technological advances for future airline uses, Scramjets may also provide an alternative to rockets for space launches.

I know I wouldn't mind a shorter flight!

I watched that on NASA TV. It was awesome.

This was the last mission for NASA's B52. It's been in service for almost fifty years.

Yea, I was watching it in MSNBC and NASA TV. I've been following Scramjet for several years... the project about died on us about a year ago. I was thrilled to see it fly!

BTW... I believe Boeing had developed a Scramjet craft several years ago, once NASA finished developing it. In about 15 years, we may be screaming across the atmosphere from New York to Paris in one of those things. :P

You are thinking of the Schick Quattro. The Mach 3 is made by Gilette.

I have one of those M3Power razors. It shaves pretty close on the areas that aren't that hard to get to, but is absolutely worthless on hard-to-reach places like right between your upper lip and your nose. I have to pull out the old Atra and some generic blades for that.

I've used both the M3 and the M3 power and I have to say, I prefer the old M3s. :P

So I'm not behind! Yes! Has anyone seen my cordory pants? :P

Oh, yeah.. I think you are right about that.. I'm the one that's behind since I still have that Schick Extreme 3. Not to mention that Gillete Sensor Excel with only two blades.. living in the Stone Ages here :P ::shrugs, and plays some Jefforson Airplane from his 8-track player::

So we had razors with 2 blades, then came 3 blades, and now 4 blades. Gee, I can't imagine what could be next except... maybe... 5 blades? :P

I'm reminded of that scene in There's Something About Mary when that guy is trying to sell his concept to compete with 7-Minute-Abs, which as we all know devistated the entire 8-Minute-Abs industry. His novel idea - 6 MINUTE ABS!! And as a bonus, he threw in the 7th minute for free. :P
