Docked At Starbase 345

When compared to others of his race, he was of medium build and height. His 5'12" stature could be considered one of intimidation by some. Yet what most did not know is that his facial expressions had been worn down by time, something he himself was actually aware of. As he sat behind his desk and looked across at the two individuals standing before him, the battle scared face forced a smile at the innocence which was apparently before him.

"As I was saying Captain, First Lieutenant Facon's condition is unchanged. When I checked in a few hours ago, the head of Starbase 345's medical division said it would probably be another four days before he was released from intensive care. I personally think that's being optimistic since he still is in isolation," one of the standing officers said calmly. The Andorian towered above all in the room, even his superior officer when he wasn't sitting behind his desk. Jonston had been at his Captain's side since the ship was commissioned near the beginning of the Dominion War. He was beginning to come to terms with the fact they need not worry about a Dominion warship attacking them every sixty seconds, something somewhat common in years past.

The Caitian Captain nodded slightly, for a moment running his hand down his furry face. "Well, we can't wait any longer. This supply run was already postponed a week due to an ion storm at New Rigel. It's still odd that Facon came down with...what was it again...Quilick Syndrome?" he said tilting his head every so slightly. His First Officer nodded, "I would tend to agree, sir. It hasn't been seen in this sector of space for quite some time. According to what the Doctors say, it is possible he picked it up a month ago during the engineer's conference on Trill."

Again the Captain nodded and turned his attention to the other officer standing before him, who had remained at attention since entering a good five minutes ago. "And I take it you are our temporary replacement for this run?" the Caitian asked trying to produce something of a smile. His XO smiled and looked to his left, "Indeed he is, sir. Lieutenant Richard Drew, please meet Captain S'erio."

For his part, the Lieutenant nodded slightly but remained at attention. As the Captain motioned to his desk, he exchanged glances with both of those in front of him. "I am afraid Mr. Drew that subspace has me at a disadvantage," he said with indifference. At this the First Officer responded, "The Lieutenant's records are not here as of yet because he was spending his personal shore leave on the station to visit some friends if I recall."

The Lieutenant then nodded slightly, speaking the first full sentence S'erio had heard from the human. Drew, still at attention, forced out, "That is correct, sirs. Since no one else was available and given my work at the Williamsburg Center was complete, it is an honor to be here...if even on a temporary basis."

The Caitian glanced at his First Officer, who had already anticipated his CO's question. "Williamsburg Center is one of two locations where Starfleet decides when a ship is due for a refit, what needs to be replaced, etc.," the Andorian said softly. The Captain nodded and smiled, "Well Mr. Drew, if you were sent to us, I am certain you are up to the task. Although we don't have your information yet, try to see about getting down to Sickbay for a full checkup before we depart." At this, the 5'12" man stood and extended his hand, "Welcome aboard the Cairo. We may only be an Intrepid in design, but I think you'll find we're full of surprises."

After several minutes, the ready room doors closed leaving S'erio and Jonston alone. Sitting back in his chair, the Caitain grunted slightly "They send us a geek. The most he's probably had to deal with is a simulator." The XO chuckled every so slightly and shifted his antenna, in the process also sitting down. "I'm sure that's not the case. From what I've heard, this Williamsburg Center is a hard place to get a posting at. I'm sure his service record is extensive, I only hope we have it before we leave," Jonston said.

The Captain nodded, shifting his shoulders slightly and running his hands through the hair on his head. "Well, like it or not it's all we have. We're scheduled to depart in thirty-three hours. The storm near New Rigel should have passed by then. Should be a by the book trip. Three days there, one day of transporting supplies and two days back here," S'erio said. As he stood he continued, "In fact, the Akagi leaves an hour before us and the Reaent thirty minutes after us. Poor people here at Starbase are going to think no one likes them."
