"Autonomous"

“Autonomous”

GromVik’s Logs

There’s just something about being autonomous, self-governing, and GromVik knew full too well that his occupation allowed for very little of it. Nevertheless, the desire had wormed its way into his mind. The fact was, a way did exist for a Star Fleet officer to achieve at least some level of autonomy. GromVik’s thoughts drifted to thoughts of the long range explorer vessels whose Captains were told to go to a broad designated area and learn all they could possibly learn. Out there, Star Fleet’s grasp was far looser. Out there, you weren’t running errands, you were, in essence, making history.

Of all the great men of history, GromVik could not find many figures that were defined by “Yes Sir” and “Right Away Ma’am.” Those figures that history chose to remember were those who had distinguished themselves, some, by no fault of their own, others, acted upon the ham gene that seemed destined to become known. GromVik wanted to be one of those men.

The comments of Captain Holloway echoed through his mind. Holloway had made it clear to GromVik that though he had an important assignment as Commander of the Admiral’s flagship, he was no more than a bellboy, doing as he was told. In the mean time, Holloway seemed virtually free, in comparison at least, to do whatever his heart desired, gallivanting around the sector without the slightest care. This point of view could not help but incite envy within GromVik.

“How long must I ride on the coattails of others…?” GromVik asked himself.

Little did GromVik know, however, that it would be more than fifteen years later before his dreams started to become fulfilled.
