Star Trek & Online Gaming to Break New Ground

For immediate release:

PERPETUAL ENTERTAINMENT TO DEVELOP AND PUBLISH STAR TREK® MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME

SAN FRANCISCO — Sept. 7, 2004 Perpetual Entertainment, Inc. announced today that it has secured the exclusive worldwide rights from Viacom Consumer Products to develop and publish a massively multiplayer online game based on Paramount Pictures' Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek is one of the world's most popular, longest-running, and beloved sci-fi properties, with millions of passionately devoted fans throughout the world. As Star Trek celebrates its 38th anniversary, Star Trek gaming begins its next evolution.

The license encompasses all live-action motion pictures and television series including, Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise. "The scope of the content license is extraordinary for a game of this kind, giving us the opportunity to immerse fans and players in the incredibly rich, diverse and exciting universe of Star Trek," said Joe Keene, CEO of Perpetual Entertainment.

The game will deliver action, adventure and combat mechanics unique to persistent world games. Its design includes a rich array of solo and multiplayer missions set in space, on planets and in starbases throughout the universe. At launch, it will take place during the 24th century timeline in the series with other aspects of the Star Trek universe to be interwoven and added through expansions.

"Players will encounter characters, places, and situations from their favorite Star Trek movies and television series; will explore incredible new worlds; and will cooperate with or battle friendly and hostile races throughout the game," said Chris McKibbin, President of Perpetual Entertainment.

"Fans of Star Trek have been longing for a game that lets them participate in and explore the Star Trek universe," said Terri Helton, Executive Vice President of Viacom Consumer Products. "We have been searching for the right partnership for our time-honored Star Trek to create a game that not only appeals to fans but a broader audience as well. Perpetual's experience, technology and vision for this game make them the clear choice."

The game is expected to enter public beta testing in 2006 and to launch by early 2007. For more information, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" about the game.

I don't play online games that much. I prefer single-player games and then, of course, the Internet for simming and writing and forums, but not computer games.

However, we'll see how this goes. It's nice to see another game in development after Paramount and Activision's little . . . spat. :D

I just read the IGN interview with the makers. One thing I'm scared of. They say its gonna be way more action based than roleplaying based. When will these simpletons learn that trek isn't just about blowing stuff up?

I've played many of the Star Trek games, including Elite Force, Armada II, and Starfleet Command. My favorite of those being Elite Force due to my love of Voyager. However I've never been overly fond of any of them.

The problem doesn't enly in that the games were badly designed, on the contrary, the graphics and design of Elite Force were amazing (for the time). It was amazing to get to walk the ship, literally. The problem enlies with that I'm not overly fond of computer games in general.

Computer games are, well, predictable. Some are less than others, but in the end you can figure out the tricks to win the game, or to be succesful. Once you figure that out the game looses its appeal. I've always managed to figure out the tricks to games so they rapidly become boring, therefor, I no longer purchase computer games.

Instead I prefer multiplayer games with real people, which explains why after two years I have not become bored with simming. Simming is a game in which you cannot predict what the other players are going to do. There are no "tricks" to figure out about them, they are real people and real people make decisions that are not derived from 0's and 1's.

Any new game that is created with Star Trek will be interesting but unless the multiplayer part of it is creative and allows people to move freely, well, it won't hold my interest. As once stated in Star Trek, a lot of frosting and no meat will become quite uninteresting after a while. They may be able to sugar the game with characters, real voices, amazing graphics, but if the quality of the game is as bad as some of their previous productions then I'm going to just skip desert.

But real people are as predictable as computers. If you play against somebody in a multiplayer game multiple times, eventually you can study their habits and their strategies and predict their likely next move--just like if you play chess with someone for a long time.

I just don't play multi-player games because I don't have the time. If I'm on the computer, I'm usually on the Internet doing something else, or more often, many things at a time.

Hey there,

Rumors of this "game" have been floating around online for about three years now (if my memory serves, and sometimes it doesn't). From my understanding of it, this will be the Star Trek version of Star Wars: Galaxies...at least when it's finished.

Between now and then, I know of at least one other massive multiplayer game which is due to come online...one based on Lord of the Rings. I also believe another based on The Matrix is due out sometime in the next 24 months. My point?

It's a long time to 2007. I still recall a great game Interplay was developing titled Star Trek: Vulcan Fury (or something similiar). It was based in the TOS era and from all indications was going to be operating something similiar to some of the modern games. Voice overs were completed with all of the cast members (with some question as to whether or not Deforest Kelley was able to actually do it still outstanding), programming 3/4 of the way done and without warning...Interplay put the project on hold.

It's still sitting on hold almost 3/4 of a decade later.

So while I think it is encouraging, I have a feeling they are going to run into a situation where expectations are not going to be met.

:D cool. I wonder if it's free.

darn you fred, you beat me to it.

sadly, with things like this, you have to fork over a large sum of money. i bought galaxies, and it would cost 50+ american for just the discs, and from what I've seen, about 10 a month. there are ways to get free months though. you get a free month (one i saw only gave 14 days) when you sign up, and, well this was for galaxies, 3 free months if you sign up with earthlink. it might differ with this, of course.

if this type of game interests you, there is a disney version, and a superhero world one.

although i've seen an april fool's joke about a game like this once (the galaxies site said he gave up waiting, and would focus on a star trek game), i can't figure out how this would work.

Actually Star Wars fans are getting a double treat later this month when the Trilogy hits DVD and Pandemics new multiplayer Battlefront is released..on the same day even...I smell a publicity stunt.....

Anyway..Ive seen some of the screens and they do look good..and yes...its a shooter...

it would be difficult to map a roleplay based multiplayer..so basically..I imagine you choose a race and try to kill everyone else...if the Star trek game is ever released...it would probably/hopefully lok really good ..but lack substance...

My..I am being pessimistic, am I not...

I'm too cheap to fork over the dough. (I also need to limit my time-sucking compulsive activities). But I do hope the game is really cool, has great visual candy, and you get to blow lots of crap up. I'm sure there's a market for it. For those of us (and them) that like plain old simming, we'll still be around.

back to the subject know. I think it would be great if we could orginize with other large sim groups to join one predetermined world (monitor, generator, whatever they call it), form guilds of each site, and have guild/sim site wars.

oh, and Galaxies costs about 50, the price I gave, around 70, was the price of the special edition version. heh, spent 20 bucks just for some sunglasses :D

oh, I did put 50 :) well, I did pay 20 for glasses I can't even use.

Oh, and PPS, make sure the game works on your computer before you go out and spend all that money. ;)

nah, I'd end up mispronouncing it, and get shot while trying to get it right.

but really, don't you want to kick, say, SFOL's, er, rear admiral. :)

Nope.

We have no desire to kick anybody. As for this ST game, it's 2½ years away, at best. Who KNOWS what will happen in that time to the game, to STSF, heck - even to Star Trek as a franchise!!

Yeah...MMORPG's (Massivly Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game...you see why they abriviate...) take a while to do. And, it'll never really be done. Their always updating Galaxies.

I wish I could buy it, however, my computer is rather er, crappy and any type of newer game would be more hassle then it's worth. I remember Galaxies was supossed to come out for Xbox and PS2, but that fell through, and broke my heart. I've been debating wether or not to buy a PS2, for FFXI, and many other games that are only on PS2, namely the upcoming MGS3, but, that's not here or there...if that's how the cliche goes...

The Matrix is being published by Sega, or developed by them...cant remember, but I know they have a hand in it. If you own Matrix Revolutions DVD theres a preview for the game. I might be interested, if it's for the console...if it's computer only, doesnt matter how good it is...

Same for Star Trek Galaxy...lol It'd be rather stupid to give it a name like that...since it takes place in only our Milky Way... If theres no talk of consoles, then I wont even be interested.

Anyways, what I'm really looking foward to is the Stargate game. It'll be cool.

Nuff said.

Thanks for the tip, Darrik...this Destiny's Wind look great! I hope they manage to get it off the ground. I just hope they don't charge for it :P

Won't be able to play it until I manage to upgrade my comp though ^_^ I love seeing fan-based games...as you can imagine. It definately blows my Flash games out of the water though, hehe.
