"A Lesson Well Learned"

"A Lesson Well Learned"

a joint log by,

Lt. (JG) Nemesis

Assistant Science Officer

~and~

Ens. Aaron Westler, Ph.D.

Assistant Medical Officer

Stardate: 10409.05

Westler walked back into the brig after the shakings had subsided. "Great", he thought, "We just get back on board and already my agenda is overflowing." Dropping his medkit on a table, he sat down for a second and rubbed his temples. After a few moments, he opened his eyes and began to rummage through the kit, and took a look at Lt. Nemesis in the holding cell. The primate was still unconscious.

Nem was strapped onto the reminants of the demolished bunk. His eyes were shut softly, giving an appearence of sound slumber.

Rummaging through his kit again, Westler found the instrument he needed. It looked much like a hypospray, but instead of injecting medicine into the patient, it removed any sample he would need. He twiddled with the controls on the thing, setting it to remove some blood samples and other tissues

Nem's head moved slightly to the side as Westler pulled out his tool. The marines on the other side of the brig tightened their grips on their weapons looking as though they were not trusting that Nem was truly stunned.

Westler got up from the chair and walked over to a weapons locker. Ignoring the the glares from the marines who just gawked at him for taking their weapons, he picked out a working hand phaser. Phaser in his right hand, instrument in left, he nodded for the guards to lower the shields. "Watch the lieutenant CLOSELY. I want to get out of this one alive." He smirked and entered the cell.

Nem now lay still, no notice of soberity in his posture, his body lay relaxed and appeared to have been unaware of everything around him. Westler inched toward Nem, keeping the phaser locked onto him. He slowly reached for Nem's forearm with the instrument, hoping to get a quick sample.

Nem lay still as Westler moved towards him. He breathed slowed, his chest slowly going up and down like someone in a deep REM sleep. Westler brought the end of the instrument down on the arm, and hit a green button on it with his thumb, his grip on the phaser loosening ever so slightly as he focused on making a clean extraction.

As Westler began to make the extraction, Nem quickly pulled his other arm up, pulling the strap off as it wasn't even there. He quickly grabbed Westler by the neck.

Westler dropped the instrument, and the vial fell away under the bunk in the cell. Westler, even though he could barely breathe, held on to the phaser and tried to aim it. He could hear the 2 marines behind him, yelling at each other, trying to find a oppurtunity to shoot.

Nem pulled himself from the rest of the straps that were holding him. He stood on the bunk still grasping Westler by the neck. Noticing the phaser in Westler's hand, he pulled it out and tossed the doctor on the floor as he began to study the phaser.

Before the Marines even had a chance to fire their weapons he had pulled the trigger on the phaser, stunning himself.

Westler was bunched up against the wall, gasping for air. Thankfully, the big ape didnt snap his neck, but it felt like his left leg was broken. The marines rushed into the cell, one holding a phaser on the primate, the other dragging Westler out. He set the doctor against a wall. "The vial!" exclaimed the doctor, "Its under the bunk, get it for me please" The marine walked slowly back into the cell, knelt down, and felt around under the bunk.

He found the vial, but it was slightly cracked. The two marines quickly grabbed the phaser and the instrument, and turned the shield back on. "Bring the kit down here if you will gentlemen," said Westler, the color coming back to his face. He rummaged around for a regenerator, and began to wave it around the fracture.

With the other hand, he examined the contents of the vial, and decided that it was just enough to run tests with. He popped the vial into a box and sealed it.

After a few minutes, he shut the regenerator off and streched his leg out. Feeling the usual paining he always had had since an injury during his childhood, and stood up slowly and packed away all his equipment. "Thank you gentlemen," he said, nodding to the Marines. "Keep an eye out for him, he's not the blubbering idiot I thought he was when I came in." The Marines sniggered as Westler slowly limped out of the brig toward the nearest lift. "And the lesson of the day is..." thought Westler, "never assume an ape is sleeping, it just might getcha"
