FEATURES:

Norway class vessels were designed for purposes of adaptability and versatility rather than sheer power and strength demonstrated by sister classes, Akira and Steamrunner. The USS Pandora's Box is designed so that specialized add-ons can be quickly removed or added at any Federation dry dock. Although the USS Pandora's Box does not carry any add-on, it has the capability of adding a tow plate, like on the original Ptolemy class, an extra warp nacelle, a runabout docking and service bay, self-contained laboratory suites, an extra weapons pod, or a high powered sensor module.

Like the Defiant and Saber classes, Norway class vessels are highly maneuverable. The difference lies in the hull structure, as Norway class vessels are classified as medium cruisers. Internally, the levels of computer automation have increased. Norway class vessels can function with less than 200 crew members, where normally a vessel of the Norway's size would take 600. Other advances that come standard are bioneural circuitry, an EMH system, and the latest tactical and sensor systems. Norway class vessels are generally suited for any role that Starfleet asks.

CLASS BACKGROUND:

With the Akira, Steamrunner, and Saber classes well underway by the late 2340s, Starfleet felt it had solved its deficiency in combat vessels, but realized it had left out the important areas of science and diplomacy. In 2353, Starfleet requested a new class to solve these problems, the Norway class. In its original planning it was to have a 50% armor reduction and the addition of two science labs, plus the addition of ambassador quarters and a large conference hall to be set up. The prototype was completed in 2361, and by 2366, as many as 50 vessels had been churned out by Starfleet.

With their efficiency and low maintenance, Norway class vessels were called upon in both Wolf 359 and the Dominion war. As of 2379, 300 vessels had been produced in total with 224 lost. 76 remain in service to this date serving various roles. Some have been refitted with a much more powerful arsenal, while others continue in the role they were designed for, diplomacy and science.

SPECIAL REFIT INFORMATION: 2377

After the Dominion War, Starfleet realized the adaptability of Norway class vessels. As a result, more than thirty were refit with a greater armament and the latest technology. The negative side was a 60% downsize in the original scientific enhancements. The positives were greater maneuverability and strength. The USS Pandora's Box completed its special refit on November 7, 2377, and like many of its class were assigned as support vessels to stations in potentially volatile areas. USS Pandora's Box was assigned to Sky Harbor Aegis on March 23, 2378, the same date when the first pylon of Sky Harbor Aegis became functional
