What's In A Name?

What's in a name?

So many people have strange and cool names, while some don't.

Many a time, I have looked at someone's name, and wonder where it came from. These are just some of the things that I have thought of:

What is an Atragon, and should I worry about the first 8?

I think I know why Van Roy has that name, but I gotta hear that story.

Did NEMISIS name himself after a movie? an enemy?

FredM. Hmmm, maybe it has a secret meaning?

Why should I pitty a kitty?

Holden. Car company? Congressman? Bay? Something stranger?

What was a tachyon particle again?

What is a Vex, and why is it crossing the road? And are delphins related to SeaQuest dsv?

Is it "willing ham?"

How many Hitchhikers do we have here?

Blu. Why can't we add a "z" or an "e" without being killed six times?

What was it that "STSTFU" stood for, and what the heck do square triangles have to do with forums?

Is there something deeper in the meaning of "Koolaidman?"

How can a moose sim?

Is Garn like Remams/Romulans but of Gorn?

Where the heck did you get a stupid name like darrik?

Oh, wait. I'm supposed to know that one.

Well, I just wanted to know, "How did you get your name?"

Why should I pitty a kitty?

It was a nickname that i gave my two kitties. One that ran away and the one i have now. So I changed my name from pittykitty to Merina, so people on the reaent wouldn't be so confused then i just added mimi pavilion for the aegis. Sooooooooooooooooooooo.

I think I know why Van Roy has that name, but I gotta hear that story.

Right around the time I first started chatting on startrek.com (back when they had open chat rooms) there was a popular commercial on TV of this guy interviewing at the firm Dumas and Dumas. He got the name wrong and called his would-be boss Mr. Dumbass. So I chose Dumbass as my sim name.

Then one day I was poking around in the startrek.com "Holodeck" and was kicked out by this group called "STSF" saying they had the room reserved. There was nothing at startrek.com confirming this so I said "Who the (colorful metaphor) do they think they are?!" So Precip, "Lt. Travis Kroells", "Admiral Garnoopy", and myself and a few others decided to check it out.

I was told that it would help me graduate faster if I changed my screen name to something more respectable. Did I listen? Nah, of course not. However, when I joined the Reaent Fred (or was it Ridire?) said I would have to change my chat name to sim.

But by this point I was too attached to being a Dumbass to just delete it from my character entirely. As a compromise my board name is Dumbass and my character name is Van Roy. Later on someone said "Dumbass" isn't very Trek-like, so I dug up that Kirk line "Well, double dumbass on you!" and found a suitable avitar.

I'm very interested in theoretical physics.

But I think I just Tachyon just because I like the name.

Oh, and whenever someone says "tachyon" or "tachyon particles" or "tachyon wave", the message turns pink. :D

And I know where my towel is.

Hmmm, well Daryus is my son's name, also my given religious name. And as for Zaphod, I think I know where my towel is. Or did I leave it on the Heart of Gold?

Zaphod,

 i know someone who hasn't graduated after over 14 sims! :D

That's nothing! The current record for a cadet going without graduation is at 156 sims.

Anyways, for my Seiben chracter, I simply chose the Hans name out of my head.. but my Seiben part I chose out of my old startrek.com nickname Seven of Eleven (Seven Eleven, get it? ;) ) so since I couldn't very well sim as a Borg I chose Seiben (the German word for the number seven, correctly spelt sieben), thus giving me my Hans Seiben name.

As for my Talon persona, Koga I incorporated two characters from Inuyasha Koga and Naraku for his name.

For my new Arcadia persona, Vectra Meriva I have named him after two cars

Here's mine...

Most of you know this, but GromVik is based off of a British cartoon claymation series called "Wallace and Gromit." If you know the movie "Chicken Run," the same company that produced that movie produced Wallace and Gromit. There were a total of three 30 minute movies that each took a year and a half to make!

Upon joining Aegis, I decided that I needed to make Grom sound more Vulcan (he's a Vulcan/Terran hybrid after all) so I added the Vik on the end to make GromVik. As it turns out, most people thought GromVik was a Klingon character for quite some time.

Gromit!

I'm a big fan of Star Wars... and slipstream technology makes better sense (and is more believable) than a warp bubble...

So that's how I got my name. HyperDrive.

Now, on to the character names...

Hewitt Demore was a name I made up "on the fly." I needed a character that had a first name starting with an H and a last name starting with a D (because people tended to just call me HD in sims). Lleyton Hewitt was also a popular rising tennis player a few years ago, so I took the name Hewitt. "Demore" just kinda came about.

Christie Farron came about in a much more interesting (freaky?) way. On my best friends first name is Christina (but we all call her Christie), and I decided to name the character after her. They're actually kinda similar, though I didn't plan on them to be.

The last name Farron came from one of my friends who moved out to California a few years back. I spelled it differently than she spelled her last name, though. But, the name came from her. ;)

So, Hewitt Demore just came into my head. Christie Farron was putting two of my friend's names together. :D

ROFL, I still remember seeing Dumbass and Admiral Garn in the acads...good times. Well, Travis Kroells is my real name, and if you want to know why I've been a Lieutenant for two years, even when most the time I wasnt....read on.

Ok. Like many of the first graduates of STSF, I found the group by accident, poking around the St.com chat rooms. I remember the first caption by teh link to the chat...

Ok...I dont, but it sounded really corny, and I laughed. A lot. Then, I thought about it. Roleplaying...could be interesting...So, I registered. I only have two online alias's, Ariago Sans, and Tactics Snake. I wanted my character to be human, so I used my real name. (Remember, this was before STSF).

Anyways, Im Travis Kroells. But, I needed a rank. At first, I thought, Captain Travis Kroells, or Commander, Admiral, Fleet Admrial Travis Kroells. But then, I thought, Just about every dweeb uses the ranks Captain, Commander, Admiral, and such, when first joinning something...they think it makes them sound impressive or something....(Sorry Garn, heh)

But, I didn't want to be Ensign Travis Kroells. That wouldn't be cool like me. So, I picked a middle ground. Lieutenant. So, Im Lt. Travis Kroells. Im stoked. Im going to roleplay for the first time. Yes! I enter the room, and no ones there. ROFL. I blink, and then...swear. I then go to the lobby, and see about thirty people there. I'm like alright! And, because I was 14, and because I was stupid, I typed this...

"Anyone wanna roleplay with me?"

And this was the response I got...

"Shut the #$(* up!!! No one here wants to @)$(@#$U@# Roleplay you freak!!!"

Yeah. I was heart broken. I turned off the computer, and went to bed. About a week later, I came back, and they we're roleplaying! Yes!!! There was this weird man named Atragon, and his wife, whom I cant remember, and they were doing some stuff, in this place. It was so cool! I got a PM, and went to STSF Mk I. (The old layout, lol) I checked the schedule, and there I was the next night at the tuesday acad. The first time I simmed with Garn, Vanroy and Precip might have been there too...Just in time to see the Admiral graduate. During the proceedings, I remember this line I said to him, kinda funny.

"Man, you never should have graduated, you just took, like a massive pay cut."

I graduated four weeks later, over a period of three academys in that time. I became Ensign Travis Kroells. But, to be honest with you, I had crappy dial up back then. And, I was just to lazy to make a new screen name. And so, I've been Lt. Travis Kroells for two years. Even though I've been a Lt. about two months of that time.

ROFL.

I think Garn told me the story behind his name in Oshkosh, but to be honest I wasn't listening. That one plane was all shiney and stuff.

Oh yes, now, after reading HD's post, (yes, every one does call you that) I must tell the names and reasons of my characters!

Travis Kroells is me, pure and simple. Altough, me and him started off very different, some what by character development accident, real life dealings, and my lazyness in not fixing the situation, Travis, and Travis have molded into the same person. He is I, and I am him. So, if you sim with me on the Reaent, you are simming with me in RL. How I act on tthe ship is how I am in real life.

My next charcter, Mogg, graced the Aegis. At the time, I was kinda bored with Travis, and was looking into making a alien character. No race better for me then the Ferengi! It took me forever to think up an alien name, but eventually my fandom of Final Fantasy pulled me through. To any Aegis simmers reading this, your old insane friend was named after a little furry creature in a video game.

Next, came Daniel Kroells. I had a grand plan for him. Indeed I did. He originally was going to be a secondary character, part of Travis's development. But, after a little thought, and random boredom of having left the Aegis, I had him join the Manticore. Daniel Jackson and Michael Shanks rock. Thats how you get Daniel.

Finally, my most recent, and unfortuenly, possibly shortest lived character, Tyler Kroells. By this time, I had decided to make a family of starfleet officers, but I didn't want to have the complex relationship that Daniel and Travis had. I was too lazy to do their development properly, so, I simply made him a cousin to Travis. I got Tyler from the fact that when my mom was pregnant with me, they couldn't decide between Tyler and Travis. They decided Travis, and for most of my young life, I resented them for it. I decided, it was a waste not to use it now, so I did.

I made "Tovan" when i was watching Voyager the Tuvok eh. Then i saw this thingy on startrek.com that lead me to stsf.net then i lost the link and never bothered to find it again which explains why i registered so late. Then one day i tried but accidentally went to stsf.com instead

I also made a Name call Tuvan but discarded that name cause it didn't sound good so i stuck with Tovan, meh.

Eli Zhu is this combination of animate characters and my friend's last name, and yes i made him my little brother Muahahahahahahhaha oh yes that evil. Kai Zhu is a real person Muahahahahahhahahaa!

um.... any thing else? :D

My SN comes (modified) from my favorite source of weird names, the Bible. Lo'Ami is modified from the name of Hosea's son in a prophetic vision, Lo Ammi, with the words joined, and the consonant doubling removed.

Unfortunately, more than one simmer thought it was a female name, and I wanted my character to be male. When I decided my character was going to be Trill, Lo'Ami became the name of the symbiont. That doesn't stop people from calling my character "ma'am," but that's another story.

We don't really know very much from the TV shows about what a "normal" Trill first name might be. The only examples I could think of were Curzon and Jadzhia. I couldn't even remember if the first Trill on ST:TNG (Odan) had a first name. So, I went back to the Bible, and found "Arpachshad" (son of Shem) in the long list of names in Genesis 11. I Anglicized it to Arphazad, keeping the 'z' sound that seemed to have been common in Trill names.

The name for the only other host I had developed at the time, Nemrod, is from "Nimrod" from the same list.

Liliana Hamilton was a generic sounding American woman's name.

It probably would have stayed that way if I had decided to continue the character, but, since I decided not to, I let it slide :-)

Kind of explains why she would go along with anything I said, though.

::smirks::

Well N'Dak is a name I came up with sometime ago...well along time ago...How I ever came up with it beyond me.

And remember there are two of me ::snickers:: Destorie was the orginal name I used with N'Dak and he became the Romulan. When I joined the Arcadia...in a moment of total unorginallity, I named him N'Dak as well. Koshic is of course a permutation of one of my Favorite Sci-Fi characters 'Kosh' from B5.

Hmm the others...

Apollo Link...because I think the name Apollo is cool and I love Zelda.

Commodus 'Cosmo' Rex...I actually spent some time researching a name for him. And since he was going to be an explorer during the TOS era I wanted him to be named after something about the stars. Commodus obviously came from the Roman Ceasar (seen in Gladiator but they had the time period and his death wrong

) but then I thought of using words that ment something so I worked in the name Cosmo and gave him the last name Rex. Cosmo Rex means roughly in Latin Star King .

Hmmm....Sheng-ji Marish.

Where I came up with the last name is beyond me lol, but Sheng-ji is the name of a charcter in a pc game I love called "Alpha Cenutari."

Neptune Rex...well i just thought he needed a cool name

Kou'gRaH (the QoB crew just loved him :D ) is the morphing of a name of a villain in the anime series Inuyasha.

Hmm....I think thats it...

For all we know Commodus may have been as common a name as Bill or Jim or Frank or Ted is today.

Loami,

You know, when you first joined the forum I was going to ask you if this was true. I was actually reading through Hosea in and around that time and the two names connected. I eventually convinced myself that it wasn't a Biblical name. I now stand corrected.

I do hope that you've read Oedipus Rex, Dak

Cause I sure wouldn't want to have any relation to him...It wouldn't be very flattering.

For those who might not have have heard or read of Oedipus Rex it pretty much, in sum, is a story about a King in Ancient Greece that met an oracle that prophecies that Oedipus will kill his father and sleep with his mother, and he tries to escape his fate, but in the end...He winds up killing his father and sleeps with his mother. It really is a good story and a must read.

So yes...I'm sure you all see what I mean; not a good person to share a last name with

Oh yea, and about my names. My original name 'Veg' was created from when I first joined.

I use to sim under the name "SSJVeggeto0203" I think, I don't remember. I was a huge DBZ fan (The Japanese version ). So when I got promoted I changed the name to Ens Veggeto or something like that and I didn't like it so I just changed it to Ens Veg, and from the I created my characters name "Vincent Edmund Godchild". The Vincent was from the movie Gattaca, a good movie, and the rest I think I got from a computer game. I don't remember which one though...

This name I just came up with one night after watching Minority Report and The Matrix. You know John Anderton and Thomas Anderson( Neo's real name). Very simple and no time wasted.

So that's how I cooked up my characters names, I little bland I know, but all the more interesting.

Ahh, yes, the name "Garnoopy". There is a story about how the name came about but, well, like the true nature of Kennedy's assisnation, some things are ment to be kept a secret.

However, I can tell you that the name origionally was not going to be a "family". I was unable to ever think of a suitable first name for my origional charater, Manticore Garnoopy, so I ended up just using it as a family name. Most people who are friends of the character call me "Garn", using that as almost a first name. It's not official though.
