Olympics: What's up with that?

Hey I found out this random bit of trivia just yesterday cos I'm slow on the uptake. What's the deal with baseball becoming an olympic sport but the United States, the country that claims it as a national pastime failing to get in? That's just plain wacky! :D

Even Greece got in!

Our best players are too busy trying to win the World Series. :D That's been around a lot longer than the sport's been in the Olympics.

Yeah, the US baseball team didn't qualify for the Olympics. I guess cuz the MLB isn't stopping play for the Olympics like the NHL does for the Winter games. Ahh well.. even Canada got in too. But.. nw that US is gone.. I do like Cuba's chances of wining Gold in that sport. :D

Bah, I just think it would be cool if there were more international games. Its a pretty good sport I think (Rugby's more my thing though) and international matches would kick arse.

Um...well, technically MLB players can't play in the Olympics because they get paid a salary in a professional sport. But usually, that is not a problem.

Not a problem or the NHL players.. they get paid salaries in professional sports too, but they still play for their countries in the Olympic Games. SO.. that's probably not the reason why the US didn't get in.

Yep, but I was surprised when Iraq's soccer team got in. But, if you can beat Portugal, you're a pretty good team. Not that I get into these things anyway.... ::walks to the nearest bar::

Hey, what about the US gtting creamed by the Puerto Ricans today in basketball. What's up with that? You losing your touch? You lost to Argentina, Italy in an Olympic Exhibition Game, and now Puerto Rico. Not a good start if you want to defend your Gold Medal. :D

why can't we all just admit that the reason the U.S. of A. didn't get in is because they SUCK.

P.S. Canada does not have as much oil as..uh..Saudi Arabia. Which means no WMDs, nope, nada. :D

So, we can still spread anti-Canadian propaganda, and almost go to war. Jeeze, didn't you see Canadian Bacon. (It's like one of the only movies that actually involves Canada.)

Aren't the Olympics supposed to be about international unity? Not dirty cross border mudslinging?

Just so I can quote Dr. Cox from Scrubs: :D

"I don't know if they taught you this in the land of fairies and puppy dog tails, where you obviously if not grew up then at least spent most of your summers, but you're in the real world now! mmmmkay?."

God I love that man.

Anyway, my point was that all this unity talk is a bunch of hooey. The Olympics are now about sponsorship deals, media publicity, lots of money, international prestige and winning medals.

No damn unity. :P

Okay, then why do we still continue fighting in Iraq? Aren't we supposed to stop fighting during the Olympics?

::almost laughing::NOOOOOOOO! Why would we stop fighting a war. Besides, the terrorists aren't participating in the Olympics. ::does the Homer Simpson:: Or are they? Marge, kids, quick, get in the car!

Well in Iraq I really wouldn't call the chaos ensuing especially in najaf simply terrorist events. These are political and religous fueds that have been contained under Saddam's rule but are now out in the open. You have armies of followers political upheaval and yep there are a few evil (insert naughty word here) who would like nothing better then to be sick and hurt a few innocent people in the process but this is more than just good guys versus terrorists.

But I don't think its sensible to ask people "hey put down your weapons and have a good ol' Olympics" when they're fighting for something they believe in at a time where every hour could effect the future of their country.

...too melodramatic? :D

I don't think so, I think you hit it right on the head. Quite frankly I'm surprised Iraq fielded any Olympians at all given their other problems.

::laughs at darrik:: Why would you stop fighting a war? What kind of idiotic question is that? Do you even know how many innocent people are dying in Iraq simply because Dubya wants some cheap oil? Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11, we all know that. The only terrorists in Iraq are the American troops, so yeah, they're not participating in the Olympics cuz they're too busy MURDERING people and searching for imaginary "Weapons of Mass Destruction".

Woah steady on chap. Everyone has an opinion but don't use giant letters.

::looks around:: Can't we all just get along? Every country has their crosses to bear. The olympic's is a way to come together as one race, the human race. (well, at least until the Intergalactic Game's start somewere in the future.) :)

Zaphod,

"You will be assimilated, meow."

Did you read my post before? There is no unity...its a celebration not of humanity but of people who push their bodies so hard that they die of heart attacks in their thirties, who do steroids, who drink only protein shakes and eat only powder stuff, who wear body suits in swimming contests and have a million sponsorship deals. Some of those folks are barely human.

To use a very over used phrase...thats one way to look at it. Another way is that is a show of world unity and national pride. :)
