First off: Congratulations on graduating.

Second: Don't rush, and apply for a sim just yet. Sit and watch a few of them, then choose the sim(s) you like the most. Browze through the sim's websites, and/or crew manifests to see what the sim is like and what posts are open. And of course you could always ask the GMs in charge. Do remember that each sim, usually has its own unique "style" to it, that could take awhile to get used to. Advanced Sims run at a slower pace than Academies, which also.. takes some getting used to. Choose a post you are most interested in, then.. apply for it. Also, try to pick a sim that's good for your schedule, as your attendance is vital for the sim and for promos. Anyways.. goodluck... and now's the time to think up a new character for your sim as well. :D

Here are my three simple pieces of advice...

1. Go with a simulation that fits your schedule. That may sound like a "no duh" suggestion, but it is important with an advanced simulation to be there as much as you can.

2. You don't have to pick a simulation right away.... Take a week or so to watch some of the advanced simulations that you might be interested in.

3. Start with one advanced simulation. If, after a period of time, you feel that you can handle multiple advanced simulations...go for it!

Hey,

I think Grommie and Seiben have mentioned the main points. When I graduated, the sim schedule was vital. My job doesn't run the normal work week, so when I first graduated I realized I only could sim on one boat! (of course there are more choices now). Take into account School, Work, Timezones...whatever.

Next I'd get in my head what I want to be...A Doctor, A security Officer...etc. Check out the rosters for openings. Then as mentioned above drop in to watch an advanced sim take place (There are an amazing array of enviornments to sim inside STSF). Feel free to PM a GM saying I am just here to watch. Remember since you are not yet onboard the sim, don't type on screen...Just watch and see if you like what you are seeing.

You'll get a lot of recommendations from other players, but again see for yourself if the sim you've heard about is the right one for you.

Congrat's Brad. When I graduated, I sat in on several advanced sims and looked them over. I chose three and requested a post. I was eventually posted to the Qob. My best advice would be to watch a few sim's, check your schedual and what post's are avalable on each ship. Then, make your choice. ::whispers:: Though we do have loads of fun on the Qob and BcH bakes up a mean batch of cookie's. ::looks around:: Influencing, no I'm not influencing. :D

Zaphod,

Woohoo Brad!

Okay, so you know, most rosters on the websites for ships are not up to date, so if you see a ship you like don't freak and go "AHH! NO OPENINGS!!" For all you know they have a roster of five and really need you... okay, so that's not likely, however, be sure to do your research.

*cough**whisper**cough* :D

Yeah, if you didn't get that, you can just look at my signature... what? I said nothing, nothing!

I can echo this. Many of the website rosters ARE out of date. Looking at the QoB website you would think we are mostly Klingons. In fact, however, the only Klingons we have right now who actively sim are BcH and KBear.

The best thing to do is ask the CO/XO of the ships that match your availability for a copy of the roster. Some will give it and some won't but you never know what they need until you ask. I was able to walk into a CENG position as an Ensign that way. Fred still needs you to fill out an application so you can be "assigned" but if you can confirm in advance that the position you want is available and the CO/XO is willing to have you in it then it becomes a very easy decision for him.

My goodness ... so much research and politicing, all for an imaginary job.

Years ago when I was first and Ensign and my 386 computer was running AOL for DOS, I picked a ship that met at the day and time I wanted to play "without doing research" (horror).

On my first night, when they asked me what post I was interested in, I told them "It doesn't matter. Put me where you need me."

It's nice to be surprised, and part of the fun in this game is being subjected to something you didn't plan. We're nice people here. All the games are fun. And you can make any post something you'll enjoy. And if it doesn't click for you, you can always change your mind and try another post or another game.

One of the US Olympians was doing an inspirational spot on TV the other night. Her message to the kids was "Just go out and play."

Well said. ;-) Congrats on your promo, Brad.

::nods in agreence with Daise'Enarrain tr'Moose::

When I first joined advanced sims a little over a year ago. I intially requested to be on the Sky Harbor (as I remember it was the trendy thing to do at the time.) However, I got posted to the Talon.

Looking back now, I am very happy that I got posted onto the Talon. (No Offense Freddo) I have met a lot of wonderful people on the ship and it is one of my favorites at STSF. (No offense to the rest of my ships, I love you guys too :D )

All of the groups here are a lot of fun, and would be happy to have new members. I think one of the most important things you should look at when picking a sim is if it fits your time schedule. Other than that, I am with tr'Moose, just go and play let everything else just happen.

Congrats on Graduating.

I disagree. I think it adds to the realism to do some research.

Think about it. As a recent Academy graduate you are pretty much doing the things a recent college graduate would do. Academies are colleges after all.

Would a college graduate take the first job to come along? No, they would do some research and find something that is a good fit for their interests, degree, and lifestyle.

Even in the modern-day military academies the brand new officers have some leeway as to where their first assignment will be and what they will be doing (ie. platoon leader or a staff position of some kind). Not much, mind you, but they do have some.

Actually, I've always though the Academy was more like boot camp, which means you'd go where they sent you. ;-)

That's a little too real, even for this place.
