With the big event, two weeks away (and the TLC Olympic Marathon airing now), I'm kind of curious if anyone here will actually watch the Olympic Games. Do you have a favourite event? And even though I'm pretty sure I know the answer (and which is why I didn't put it in the poll), which country do you think will win the most Medals? Sigh.. as much as I'd hate to say it, the US probably will as usual. But.. Go Canada anyways. :P

The problem is when they aren't in this hemisphere it's hard to watch.

I wish I could have seen the Olympics when they were in Australia. In the gymnastics competition one of the parallel bars was set too low - and a bunch of people went flying overhead when they missed the bar :P

You know i wish the olympics only had one competitor per country. :P that would be sweet. The people would have to try to master as many sports as they could!

Originally (going back to Ancient Greece) that's what the Decathalon was for. That WAS the Olympics, period. Then gradually more events got added, like the Marathon, the Javelin, the Disk throw, Archery, etc. It was originally designed to promote an interest in combat-specific skills.

Now we have stupid stuff like that "curlung" thing.

::in tough guy voice:: Yo, curling is a real man's sport.

P.S. It's curling, not curlung. And it's subservient.

and curling is a winter olympic sport.

I just made this extra post, so when I tell people I made 30posts in one day, I can say two of them weren't in word association.

I think you would get so much more support if it went back to being like that. each country would have a superhero to root for! It would be trippy!

The thing I look forward to during the Summer Olympics every time is watching the women's volleyball teams. (Yeah, go ahead, laugh).

What no one believes is that I like to watch it because it's an exciting example of grace, strategy and teamwork. I have no interest in beach volleyball of any sort, and the men's volleyball teams just pound the ball at each other. The women's game is more of a head game and I find it unusually facinating.

The Olympics seem to be the only time they broadcast the sport.

Ahem ... Women curl as well ::gets ready to throw a rock::

Since I'll be done with school (yea! Last day is Aug 6th) and studying for my National Board Exam, I'll have time to check in on what events are being broadcast. Ones to watch: swimming, soccer (women then mens), I hope to catch a women's softball game. I was living in AZ when Jenny Finch was pitching for UofA and saw a couple of her games. She's incredible. Oh, and cycling.

Hey there,

I'll probably glance at some of it. Sadly, for some odd reason I have a feeling it might end up in the news for non-sports related items. If the 2004 Olympics go off without some type of terrorist related incident, it will be by the mercy of the Almighty.

I mean when a country tells others "Yes, you can bring military forces in to guard your team(s)," tells NATO basically "If something goes wrong, be moblized on our border and invade us...cause we won't be able to do anything," you have to wonder. I would have hoped after the situation in Germany, Olympic organizers would have taken security as one of the top priorities in choosing a site. The fact Greece is practically going bankrupt trying to secure the event tells me they really weren't prepared to handle it. (Note: No offense to anyone from this country, personally have nothing against them. Just my outside observation.)

Um dude, this olympics is spending more on security than any previous olympics by a huuge amount. Greece wasn't prepared for this type of event and likely when its over you'll have many collosal but unused structures. However to say they've been lax on security is probably the one thing you couldn't say about this olympics. The place is gonna be like a fortress. However that could ruin the taste of the event and chalk it up with every other failed part of preperation.

...heard that they've only sold about HALF the tickets

Hey there,

You can spend all the money in the world, but if it isn't used properly it is meaningless. I had a cousin who was a participant in the 2000 Olympics and I know security was tight there. Yet in Greece's case, their government has been complaining for the last few months that they're practically going broke to pay for security.

That tells me they were not prepared for what they were going to have to do. The fact they are so upset about the financial cost of handling security and are so concerned that they're messures are not enough is a giant issue for me. It's one thing if you spend the money and have some confidence you'll be able to maintain a degree of protection. It's another when you spend the money and still don't think you can maintain a degree of protection.

As for unsold seats, probably the same reason many athletes declined to be on teams this year. They don't trust the security messures.

Yeah, I think Security should be pretty tight this time around. I just hope it's enough, given how Greece was so behind a few years back. But it is the non-sports events that usually take the glory.. e.g. Security issues, Olympic Scandals.. Just look at the 2002 Games. But anyways.. it's only once every 4 years, so I'm gonna watch as much as I can.

Hi All!

Yes I will watch the olympics. Being in Grease this year is awesome. Especially Baseball, Basketball, Gymnastics and Skating events. Ok this seems appropreiate to post. No bad talk about the olympics here. They remind me of a song that came out in the late 90's by Alan Jackson and Jeffy Foxworthy, country artists. I'm also a country girl so there ya go. It's called Redneck Games. It's in Wav sound format so you will need a media player if you don't already have one. This pertains to the topic, so if you like to check it out the link is:

It's the second one from the bottom of the page counting up. Hope you like it.

After days of Russians popping out there fingers on the high bars, marathon runners being pushed off the track, a gymnastic almost falling on top of the judges, and go on to win the gold, women's volleyball, that funny little girl that was singing at the closing ceremony, the Olympics have finnaly come to an end. Now, NBC will finally start LCS3 and Father of the Pride! Woohoo!
