“Only Time Would Tell”

Garnoopy sat solemnly at the engineering console on the bridge, staring at the numbers and the data as it moved across the screen. None of it seemed to make a difference. None of it magically unlocked the key as to what happened, why it happened, and what he had done to cause it.

The data was irrelevant; he needed to get down there, to see with his own eyes the cloaking generator on the shuttle. What had happened to cause such a disaster would lay with that one piece of technology. As to whether it would show extreme incompetence on his part or a bad piece of hardware didn’t matter, what mattered was making sure that this never happened again, so that no one would get hurt again.

Closing his eyes to try and get a breather, it flashed into his mind again. He saw the data moving across the screen, the panels beeping, almost screaming out that there was a problem. The level 5 diagnostic results turning up zip as he attempted to get the cloak online. The power relays fusing in other systems as they were hit.

He shook his head and took in a breath, trying to go back to concentrating on the data. The deep breath itched his throat, and sent him into a spasm of coughing. Leaning over the engineering panel, he attempted to stabilize himself as he got odd glances from other bridge crewmembers that were obviously surprised at his outburst.

Nothing was getting accomplished here, no leads were being made, he had to go down there.

Standing slowly, he walked into the turbolift and tapped the control pad for Shuttle Bay 1. The turbolift began it’s descent downwards, towards answers which could either prove that he had screwed up, or that by some chance a real accident had occurred. Only time would tell.
