Star Trek XI = Romulan War?

Hey there,

Well, this is interesting. My thoughts are below...

The Romulan Wars are tipped to be the subject of the next Star Trek feature film.

Enterprise executive producer Brannon Braga reportedly told the Star Trek Communicator that the series may not be able to feature the Romulan Wars because of a possible clash with the upcoming movie.

"It's certainly one of the things that we've been discussing," Braga reportedly said. "But there's also a prequel feature in development regarding the Romulan Wars, so we might have to stay away from that." In the same magazine, franchise head honcho Rick Berman said Trek XI would be set before the time of Kirk, but would not be connected with Enterprise.

The first sighting of the Romulans came in the second-season episode, "Minefield", in which the NX-01 inadvertantly strayed into Romulan territory. According to established Star Trek lore, the Romulan Neutral Zone was established in 2160 after a long war between Earth and the Romulans. With "Zero Hour" taking place in 2154, the Romulan Wars could conceivably take place during Enterprise's run.

Braga also discussed the storylines in development for Enterprise's fourth season, including the return of the Temporal Cold War. "One thing we're discussing is possibly blowing the lid off the Temporal Cold War once and for all," he reportedly said. "That's probably something we'll do in this first storyline. I can't say that for sure, because we're just getting into it. But I'd really like to resolve that and put a cap on it. It would be a nice thing to do after three seasons of teasing it along."

The foundation of the Federation could also start to figure heavily in the series. "There are going to be some major interstellar events and conflicts happening that could involve the forming of the federation. We're going to see more of what's going on back at Earth. We might see something dealing with the Eugenics Wars."

Source: Next Movie To Deal With Romulan Wars?

I am concerned about the last sentence though, since according to Trek history the Eugenics Wars took place before World War III...actually supposedly about 10 years ago in real time. How could they deal with them two hundred years after they took place?

Movie concept seems interesting and I'm not all upset about them ending this Temporal Cold War subplot this season. Let's make the founding of the Federation the show's long term subplot.

They do seem to be conflicting though on what they're saying...makes me wonder if either of them really has a clue, especially since they're supposedly backing away from Star Trek: Enterprise this season.

Well.. I have been somewhat curious about what would happen in the Earth/Romulan war, so I might see it for that. But yeah.. I agree.. I hope that the movie doesn't really change much of Trek history, otherwise It'll just be another coaster for t'Rexan's drinks when it comes out on DVD. :) As for Eugenics war, I'm sad to say I've no clue on that. :D

I don't undertand how a Star Trek movie would be a Star Trek movie without any of our beloved charecters...

And I am possible worried tha they will begin to show too much on Earth and take space exploration out of the equation. They should probably leave the Romulan war for the series and do the movie on the begins of starfleet.

At least I like that Idea better.

I agree. The Eugenics War has come and gone, there was a brief tribute to it in Star Trek: Voyager, but otherwise it is not a major part of Trek lore. What we really need is something big, like the founding of the Federation.

Perhaps Enterprise could get the Romulan Wars, and then the series could end with the seeds sown for the founding of the Federation. I'm willing to wait four or five more years--if Enterprise survives that long.

Yeah.. and if Paramount does that, maybe.. Enterprise will garner the ratings they want to keep the show afloat. :D

The founding of the federation is a great idea for a movie, but you'd have to throw in some action for the box office bucks. Maybe have the Enterprise cast at the start of the romulan wars with the first planets of the federation (including the Caitians :D ) getting together to fight the evil Rommie's.

Zaphod,

"You will be assimilated, meow."

Khan is not a major part of trek lore?

Would be nice to see exactly how and when the Federation becomes a superpower in the quadrant. Though that could take place in Enterprise....

Khan is not a major part of trek lore?

I knew someone would bring that up . . . but I really think that Khan can be separated from the Eugenics Wars themselves. Khan was a great villain, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is my favourite movie. However I don't think the Eugenics Wars were large enough to warrant a movie devoted to them. Also, we've already had one movie that dealt with Khan, and the Trek crew always seems to have fun poking around in that era. Having the eleventh film become Star Trek: The Rise of Khan would be a little redundant. Khan has come and gone, and will be remembered.

Greg Cox also wrote a great two-volume series about the Eugenics Wars. I realize that these books aren't canon, but they're still great books. After reading them, I don't really want to see a different version presented on screen.

Not sure how I think of this.

I still don't like the idea of the Romulan Wars being made into a movie because I don't think that part of Star Trek history could be sufficiently covered in two to three hours. Example, the Dominion War. The series did a way better job then a movie ever could.

As for the founding of the Federation, unsure. I would love to see how the 5 founding members of the Federation interact. Two of the races, Tellarites and Andorians, have been ignored too long in Trek as far as I'm concerned, probably because human and Vulcan makeup is more cost effective.

But frankly, my personal feeling (since I love Enterprise) would be to have Enterprise cover both the Romulan War and the founding of the Federation.

Hey there,

Well again, in order for you to actually see the Eugenics Wars, the movie would have to be pre-NX01. According to Trek lore established in TOS, this conflict took place during the 1990s. That's a solid hundred and fifty years after Star Trek: Enterprise and the founding of the Federation.

That's what concerns me. Berman and Braga make it sound like it took place around the time of the founding of the UFP. However, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Well, in theory, the Botany Bay was travelling slower than light for 300 years before it was found? Would they have even made it to Alpha Centari by then?

I know I should be a purist about Trek history, but I know they made some of this stuff up when it was just a two or three season T.V. show, and not a "cannon" or opus. It's hard to blame the original writers for not having the history of the future all mapped out (yes, I know. B-5 did it 20 years later. But that was after there was a proven market for this stuff).

If the established refrences don't add up coherantly, it's hard to blame B & B for taking a little creative license for the sake of a good story.

But Khan already received a TOS episode, and 1 ST:TOS movie. Fans need change...unfortunately, Paramount will keep with there plans (although us here at STSF have great ideas :D ). As for setting the scene, there will always be groups who don't want change and will do anything to sabatoge peace efferts...history nearly always repeats itself....

Like I said I think it would be a bad idea if the made a movie on the eugenics war. The would possible lose the repect of a lot of ST fans, the movie would not go as well as the hope--thereby causing no more future for Star Trek...

Technically there letting someone else step foward.

They've written a book about the first daedalus without any characters from previous works. It was Starfleet Year One, and it was a ceareal that appeard in the back of books a while ago. They did print it out in a single book, for those of you who don't have $82 to blow.
