"Decisions"

Log by Dockworker/Pilot Dimtri Koralev

The Pub in San Francisco was a buzz with local musicians trying to get a break. However the music was not attracting the attention of the dockworkers at table three.

" I sure as heck am not going to Mars!" Jennings belted as he finished his drink. "To hell with the military..there is more money in the private sector. and it's bloody safer!".

"I doubt you could find Mars on a star chart Pat.." Koralev chipped in drawing some laughs from the booth.

"Well, from what I hear the Martians have the laborers to do the job.." Quipped Kim.

"They don't have the experience..I don't care what those bloody corporations claim" Jennings blasted...clearly agitated..a bit drunk perhaps. "This move could shift the orbital construction business from Earth to Mars in all forms..Private and Military..Damn fools. We got to make a stand!"

"What do you propose? A strike?" Dimtri added. "There hasn't been a sucessful labor stopage in space yet. The military..or Starfleet..whatever the heck they call it..would court-martial you...and the private sector would just vent you.."

Hatuski Kim..laughed at that remark. "Venting..that's a good one Dimtri." Seriously guys..I got family to consider..My wife and two Kids..it's been hard as of late. The Hours, the attack...I can't Consider Mars. And I bet a lot of engineers on Challenger aren't going to go because of the same reasons."

Jennings Nodded. "You can't simply relocate a major project like this...They can't replace us and our facilites in Earth. We can't even defend our own orbital facilties..what makes the Director of this program think we can defend two orbital shipyards. Nuts I say! I am quitting as well Hatuski....It aint worth it. I can build things on Luna and I can plasma torch it with the best of those aquatic engineers."

"Well, It is quite clear..." Koralev finished his Vodka. "They are going to have to Pay those workers a lot of money..regardless of where they work Earth or Mars. You have to be pretty stupid not to ask Hazard Pay..If I were a Martian. One thing we must remember guys. Martian constuction crews unlike their Terran counter-parts have always worked in SpaceSuits. They'll be able to get their space legs quicker than any terran engineer."

"Oh geesh thanks Koralev....thanks for the positive news." Jenkins blurted. So are you going to teach these Martians how to fly a workpod?"

Koralev could only have smile as he reached for another drink...unable to reach a decision of his own.
