I will be living in a dorm at CCCC. I will have a roommate. (No, it's not a guy.)

I am currently attending college and live with my parents (it's only 20 minutes away)

Plus, dorms don't seem to advocate learning, which is what you are paying for to go there.

And nobody forget that!

Dorm life. Hmm. Well. You don't have a kitchen, so you'll be paying insane amounts of money for food. It's not really 'independent' living, because dorms have ridiculous rules that would make any adult feel like a child. The 'rent' for the dorm will be FAR more than you'd pay for an apartment off-campus. Considering your dorm room will be 200 sq ft with a roommate and you could have a 700 sq ft 1 bedroom yourself for the same price.

Dorms are great for making friends...if you don't have that problem, live off campus. After a year of the dorms you'll be ready to leave.

While I was in the dorms, I hated every minute of it. Then again, I'm a bit of an ani-social dweeb, so that's not overly surprising. I think perhaps if I'd gotten stuck with a less-catty group of people, I would have enjoyed my experience more. Unfortunately, I didn't have much choice in the matter, as most colleges won't let freshmen live off-campus unless it's with their parents or they're too old or some such special dealiebob.

The reasoning for this is that it actually *does* help with studying and such. Only if you enjoy studying in groups, I'm afraid ^.^

I can't complain about the dorms I lived in while in college. I was in a brand new building my sophmore and junior year (lived off-campus my senior year). It had working AC, new computers, free high speed internet, and the rooms were not too small.

Now... the school is actually in the process of building actual APARTMENTS on campus for those who want "the best of both worlds" with on/off campus living. It includes a private bath/kitchen, and a living room type of room seperate from the bedroom. They've got them so they can either be 1, 2, 4, or 6 person apartments. Quite nice actually... I was impressed. If it was available when I was there, I would have been tempted to go for it.

While dorms were a tempting prospect, I only live about 10 minuites away from my school by car, and thusly, I saw no reason to move into a dorm. My school bought the building from Howard Johnson, (who built a newer hotel nearby), and thus.. all of the dorm rooms are hotel rooms. I've seen it, and man.. it's so small.. the rent is only $500/month, but I guess I didn't see much logic in shelling out that much, for a place that's probably smaller than a household livingroom.

Dang, dorms are $500 at your school? I'm renting my two bedroom apartment right now for $430, and I still think the dorms are cheaper (not including the meal plans).

Yeah, but that's $500 Canadian, a month. I believe the Canadian dolar is worth 74 cents US, last time I checked, so you do the math...

Can't say I've gone through the dorm experience, and probably won't anytime soon.

I live in a nice apartment with my sister and we split all the costs of living (Okay she pays more than I do, but what can I say she's an architect; she can afford it ). So she does her things and I do mine and we are all just peachy keen and never bother one another.

Been like this for the last 5 years and probably will till I move out on my own once I'm all done with college.

Dorm life, good lord, what a flashback that created.

Freshman HAD to live on campus at my university, either dorms or sorority houses, unless they gave proof of living at home. Since my family lived three hours from campus, and I'm not much of a sorority type it was the dorms for me.

I think I would have enjoyed my freshman dorm experience more if they would have paired freshman together or allowed you to pick your roommate. Instead they just dump everyone's name into a box and start drawing. My roommate was a sophomore, who already had a group of friends and was just plain WEIRD. So if I felt alone before I started school, this didn't help matters at all.

Plus, she found great pleasure in making fun of others -- all the time, in any way shape or form. Now as I look back it was her way to divert attention from herself. IE, if everyone is laughing at so and so, they can't make fun of me.

I was a AFROTC cadet and she lived for Fridays when I had to wear my uniform. Her hazing was worse than the senior cadets. After two quarters, I had had enough and put in for a dorm transfer. I went from bad to worse. This roommate was seriously psycho and was hospitalized twice for suicide attempts.

The good thing about dorm life? Co-ed dorms :-) My sophomore year, I moved over to the co-ed dorm that this hot guy from our cadet corps lived in, just to have an "excuse" to hang out w/ him. Sounds a little like stalking, I know, but 18 years later he's still thrilled that I'm following him around ;-)

Good luck in the roommate draw.

Per year or per semester?

A decent 1 bedroom apartment costs $500/mo. You can get studios for less, considering a dorm is basically just a studio apartment. Figure $400/mo for a studio. Split 2 ways, because you have a roommate, is $200/mo.

So $2400/yr for rent. Plus electric and plus water (unless paid) plus phone. Figure in 50/mo for electric and 20/mo for phone, 12/mo for water we're up to 3,300/mo. Add in food...you'll be spending a lot more money on food at a dorm than living on your own, simply because you're basically eating at a cafeteria 3 times a day. The food won't compare to a homecooked meal, so keep in mind you'll probably eat out alot. But you can add about $100 for yourself per month for food living on your own.

So now you're at $4,500 a year just for food and shelter, living on your own. Assuming your dorm cost w/ food is per year, you're saving money by staying in a dorm. If it's per semester, you're paying more.

Of course, dorm-life isn't just all about the numbers. It's a great way to live when you're first moving out of your parent's home...because there are a lot of rules and security that would be beneficial to a young person.

Personally...when I was in college my friends lived in the dorms. They were about the size of my bedroom, I was paying less in rent than they were paying for their dorm (even when factoring in that I was living solo and they were doubled up), my meals were healthy and clean (not handled by 5 different cafeteria workers and scooped out of a series of big buckets), and I paid less for food.

I would recommend you and your roommate look into some off-campus apartments to settle into. Though if you're not ready for independent living, the dorm is the way to go. At least in the dorm you can move out without having to worry about rent

Also keep in mind that when the regular semesters are over, you will have to pay extra to stay in the dorms during the summer (if they allow it). So you need to plan on moving back in with your folks a few times every year.

Heh...

Technically, all Freshman at WVU are supposed to live in the dorms...many don't (there isn't enough room for eveyone)...I did. Personally I think everyone should have to live one year of thier life in a dorm (I also say everyone should have to work in fast food,) its a wondeful character building experience.

Other than food, Dorm life was fine, you don't have worry about your bills, you have free (heh heh) High Speed Internet, someone to clean your bath rooms  etc, etc. It also gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people.

As far the living arangements go, WVU offers a wide variety of conditions to live in--everything from single suites to double suites, to Apartments to Condos and heck you can even stay in the Holiday Inn in they bought.

I decided though this year to live with a friend off-campus (its within walking [visual] distance. My rent is $250 a piece plus about $50 dollars in utlities each...my college is paid for by scholerships so that said I just get the money back hehehe

I'll have to disagree with you here. About the dorms you say these are the benefits:

Other than food, Dorm life was fine, you don't have worry about your bills, you have free (heh heh) High Speed Internet, someone to clean your bath rooms  etc, etc. It also gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people.

I would have hated this when I was a Freshman in college. I moved out of my parents house to live on my own and learn what it's like to be on your own...not replace my parents with a school administration  I think this is good for those students who wouldn't be able to handle independent living. But you don't learn about real life until you're out in the real world, IMO.

(I also say everyone should have to work in fast food,)

I'll disagree with you there also. It's bad enough that people eat that slop, but serving that slop while working for minimum wage for a greedy corporation that treats its employees like dirt isn't what I'd call a fantastic learning experience. Unless its your intention to learn what a really crummy job is so you'll respect your 50k/yr job after college.

My Point Exactly....not only that but it will teach you some humillity towards the people who have no choice but to work that 'crummy' job

McDonalds Testimonials

Scroll down and read some of the testimonials from McDonald's employees.

I work a minimum wage job while I get through college...there's a difference when a company doesn't treat its employees with respect. No one 'needs' the experience of being treated like dirt.

Uh. Well. Yeah, I did. Yeah, I had a blast. No, I don't remember a lot of details. I remember two blurry events from my first week in my dorm: The first was playing an inane game called "pigmania," and the second was swinging from the ropes of a giant flagpole on the hill across the street, with the challenge being not to smack yourself into the nearby lamp post if the arc of the swing was wrong. I don't remember how frequently we did these things, or when. I remember trying some "punch" made in a garbage pail and noting that it only tasted like Kool Aid...

Three years later I moved off campus, and oddly my memories get much clearer around then.

I loved living in the dorms. I lived in them for the first 2yrs of college. I did not know my roomate either time I moved in but luckly I had great roomates. I made some great friends and it is eaiser that having to drive to school, park, walk to class. I would wake up in my pj's and drag my half asleep self to class(no one seemed to care).

And I have another question where do all of you live that your rent is $200 a mon. Maybe it's because I'm in LA but oh my gosh. my two bedroom apt is $2100 a month. Pretty crazy!

Dang! $2100/mo! You can rent a house for that much dough here, and Toronto is one of the most expensive cities in Canada! But yeah.. it's cuz you're in LAI guess. I think the majority of us are simple small town folk
