Alright, What's Berman Up To?

Longtime Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman has confirmed that he is in the early stages of planning another Star Trek feature film, though he refused to confirm that it was a prequel to any given series, nor to say whether there were other films under consideration.

Though the web site Ain't It Cool News published a report earlier in the year that a trilogy of Star Trek prequels were under development, Berman told Dreamwatch (via TrekWeb) that this was not precisely true.

"I can understand why Ain't It Cool News would get information about it being a prequel trilogy," said Berman. "That's not quite correct, although I can understand how someone might misinterpret the information to be that."

Berman told Dreamwatch that he was "very much involved" in developing the proposal. "There is a film concept that is in discussion," he noted. "It's in the very early stages of development, so it's really too early to talk about."

The original item came from the current issue of Dreamwatch magazine in the U.K. These excerpts were originally published at TrekWeb.

Hey there,

Well, makes me wonder....what in the world is this guy up to? Why am I afraid he's trying to develop a Starfleet Academy: 90210 featuring Cadet James T. Kirk?

Because the potential to bring in younger versions of the familiar characters has always been a nightmare that's just waiting in the wings.

Star Trek XI, already? I think they should wait . . . I mean it's only been a year now, Berman should at least wait until 2005. C'mon, Star Trek isn't that desperate.

Is it?

Young Cadet Kirk to Starfleet Academy Superintendent:

"Why no sir, I didn't intend for the simulation to go that way. But reading the script beforehand did help."

Hey there,

Well, given what the article reads and stuff I've seen previously, I don't think this project will get legs for anything until either A) After Star Trek: Enterprise is off the air or  By 2006.

If they are in very, very, very early stages now...safe to assume they wouldn't get anything locked in until the end of 2004. They wouldn't even start real pre-production on the project probably until the middle of 2005 at the earliest...meaning your looking at a late 2006 or early 2007 release.

That sounds reasonable, but it's still far into the future. I think it'd be good to have a Trek movie not based on the crews. However, I don't want it turning into a movie franchise.

I know what the next movie will be about.

Young Kirk sleeps with a hot babe, but she's an alien, so it messes up the timeline...the movie is set for 10 minute intervals that repeat over and over again until young Kirk starts to realize whats going on and, in a final heavy-nude scene, decides to take a cold shower instead and restores the timeline.

Would Kirk really do that? I think he'd just say "To hell with the timeline!" He's done that plenty of times, and I believe his only competitor for temporal violations is Janeway.

I'm watching "The City on the Edge of Forever" right now, by the way, so this is a particularly interesting subject

Stop giving away my design secrets! GAH!

::looks around nervously to see if her competition is reading these boards::

And I'll work on a theme song. Give me something to do on the plane next week
