The Manticore was ordered to investigate a regular energy

pulse "transmitting" from four miles (6.4 km) down the Ganges

Chasma on Mars. After losing a probe, a science shuttle and

a crewman by a beam weapon from deep in the Chasma, a

team descended into the chasm in just EVA suits and grav belts,

led by Captain Sovak, who was struck by an energy burst at close

range. As he lay in Sickbay in a coma, Ensigns Law and Crystal

stole the Captain's Yacht and examined the chasm on their own.
