In my Public Relations class, we were discussing how cell phones have changed the way we live. A study in 1995 estimated that by 2004 1 in 4 people would have gotten rid of their land lines in favor of mobile phones. We took a poll in class.... 1 in 4 so how about STSF? Do we meet 1 in 4?

It used to be just a bonus, now its a neccesity. I guess that's the same with every new piece of technology.

I disagree. I abhor phones in general . . . they require you to . . . talk with people. Ugh. I prefer the Internet as a means of communication.

My family has a cell phone provided by my father's work, but I still try to avoid it (except to play games!), generally because it means calling someone.

Yah i'll have to agree with Tach over here. I don't like phones ... I haven't touched a phone since ... 2 years ago ... heh heh ... yeah internet rocks!

PS. Its true i never touched a phone for 2 years, not even the ones in the house. I don't even have a phone in my bedroom. Just to show you how paranoid i am.

Hey there,

I first got a beeper about my last year in middle school. Ended up getting my first cell phone, I believe sometime near the latter half of my Junior year in high school. Had one ever since.

To a certain extent, I like sometimes visting certain relatives where my cell phone (which uses the newer GSM system) doesn't have a reliable signal. There are times when you do need to "get away" and our technology doesn't make it all that easy anymore.

The expression "can't live with it, can't live without it" comes to mind.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say my cell phone has replaced my land line, but it has replaced my long distance. Then again, I get my cell phone pretty much for free, as my uncle pays for it unless I go over what the family plan dictates (like last month, damn hour long conversations with Grandma!)

Land line is good for: tape recording interviews for work, ordering pizza, toll-free calls when the battery is low, calling in sick for class ^.^

I have a cell phone, but I don't warship it. It's just a tool. Nothing more, nothing less.

Very few people have my cell phone number. I carry one basically so I can let my wife know what train I'm on going home and so she can reach me in emergencies (like she forgot to ask me to pick up cheese at the store).

I spend too much time on the phone at work, so I don't usually hang on the phone and chat (I don't hang online and chat much for that matter).

But what I do find interesting is that I won't think twice about making a long distance call on my cell phone, but I will treat it like a big deal if I call long distance on my land line (even though it's cheaper).

I want a cell phone in case of emergancies while I'm at college and to call my friends when I'm bored. So, that's why I voted "No (I want one)."

ROFL Images!

Yeah, I got one. I work weird hours in weird places, so it was a safety thing initially. Of course like it was stated above, now I go into a panic if I ever leave the house without it. I have to admit that when my old one died, I made sure my new one had a flip top like a communicator... And it has a flashing light antenna which serves no purpose other than to look REALLY cool and even more sci-fi.

What started as one cell phone to have in the car in case of emergencies (ie, long drives across North Dakota in the winter) has turned into a family plan with three phones. One for me, one for Mr. Dac and one for the oldest Dac.

I drive 40 miles one way for school everyday, so between the off chance for car trouble and a kid throwing up at school/summer camp, it's necessary for me to have one.

Mr. Dac travels a great deal for work and often it's hard to reach him (maybe he likes it that way) so a cell phone is a great *connection* tool for us.

Oldest Dac is ten and heavily involved in after school/camp activies. It's impossible for me or Mr. Dac to always stay for all of her practices (because the two littler Dacs have activies too) so I would not feel comfortable leaving her at practice/games without a way for her to call me. She thinks it's very cool. Oy.

So, while we didn't intend for cell phones to come appendages of our bodies, slowly but surely they have found a way to worm into our lives. Though we could live without them, it would certainly make for more worry and stress on my part.

Plus, where else can I get barnyard sounds for a ringer and the TNG Enterprise D as my *screensaver* all in one place! :P

yeah i had the star trek tune as a tone but whenever it rang everyone would ask what the hell it was and when i told them they would shake their heads and mutter vague threats to the UN. So now i have the tune to the old x-men cartoon and yes nobody knows what it is either but it was such a cool themesong.

I dont have one and have no desire to ever have one. And the really funny thing is I work for a cell phone company now and I wouldnt have one even though I would get a discount. Ironic huh?

Hey there,

I see a photo opportunity in Vegas....yes....we'll call it "The Many Phones Of STSF". :P

Regretfully, my current phone doesn't have a good quality sound system in it and I have yet to locate a good Star Trek themed ring. On my old phone, I had the theme from Space: Above & Beyond but regretfully they no longer sell that one online. So...

At the moment, I just have a beeping noise that was built into the phone as the ringer. Funny thing is, being a flip phone and all, it honestly does sound like the sound effect from TOS.

The older I get, the more I like my cell phone? I don't know...I used to love staying up late as a teenager and chatting online. But now? I'm on, I check my mail, I'm off. There's something more personal about cell phones that make them even better than land-lines...and it probably has to do with nation wide long distance and free nights and weekends (gotta love fierce cell competition...we win!). :P But anyway, yeah I think they are pretty cool...and I still think so even after the multiple threats of FredM calling me.

Go figure...

I need to sleep. :D

ROFL, I'm talking on my cell right now...

And too Fred, I'm just waiting for some one to show up at Shore Leave with a cammera phone. You'll never be safe from them.

On that topic, cammera phones are just about the worst idea ever. They do have a small purpose, but when are you ever really going to use it?

I *heart* my cell phone. Though I am horrible at putting minutes on it. (It'sa Virgin Mobile, I'm po') And sometimes I let it go for a week or so before I do.

I never get calls anyway. I use it all on Video Clash votes on MTV and ringtones. :P

Someone call me! ::sniff::
