1: You can easly get such "witchcraft" from plenty of shows on TV. I can pick at least three off my head in an instant.

2: If the parent dont want the kids to read the books, then keep them from reading the books.

3: This book doesnt really even contain what you'd call heavy "Occult" material. Sure, it's got magic, and wizards, but plenty of other books have this too.

4: Lastly, if the child for somereason does start to belive this is all "real", the parent should be able to deal with it. And if they dont recognize it, thats a whole nother problem.

Oh I understand that those affected may be in the minority, however, like I said, having dealt with some "messed-up" individuals who were deeply involved with that's stuff, my response is to avoid it. In response to your objections.

1. True.

2. Also true.

3. And I would also say to avoid those books too...especially those which magic is front and center.

4. I completely agree with your statement, but I don't think it pertains to Harry Potter.

I personally really enjoy them. I think they are very creative and entertaining. In regards to witchcraft and the occult; it's personal preference. I'm very interested in new age spirituality, and maybe that is why I really love the books. I see no harm in them, especially with children who are properly supervised.

Who knows. Who doesn't love getting lost in a fantasy world now and then? People get way too serious about things that have no need for it. ;)

Hey there,

I think that's the overall point many are making. Could a child, just going out and buying these books, perhaps take a wrong turn with them? Sure. However, if the parents are responsible and explain that what they're reading is pure fantasy...then there won't be a situation.

Well I was going to keep my mouth shut about the witchcraft comments (from both sides) but I am not going to ;)

First let me say: Its a matter of personal choice, if some feel that they'd rather not be exposed to 'witchcraft' thats their personal choice...as it is some people's to think other wise.

I personally don't think that Harry Potter is to deep involved in witchcraft anyway.

I think its a bit nutty to think that after your kid reads harry potter they're gonna start sacrificing chickens in your living room or using your dining table as a shrine of eternal evil. ;)

Hmm, guess I'd best not even mention I hang out at RenFests and 3 day long LARPS (both fantasy/SciFi and historical). I at times...dress the part. See what gaming has done to me!

And if we're talking about Parental Supervision, let's step back a few years when folks were so up in arms about "South Park" and how it was a perversion for kids to see. Well, hey there, it's on a cable station and airs at 10:00 PM on a Wednesday night. This sounds to me like someone is letting their children have access to a cable-connected television late at night on a school night. As a parent, let me just say that TV or books or XBox, etc., etc. are no excuse for interracting and staying involved with your offspring. Sure, you can let children enjoy these pasttimes, but you don't leave them there unsupervised for long stretches of time.

You had to know that this whole Occult controversy would cross over into here. But true, this topic has more or less turned into a parental supervision topic...

I agree wholeheartedly! It's one thing to complain about the evils of a book, or a TV show, but should you really be complaining if you are being a good parent and staying on top of things as you should be? Mwah. My son is 4, and I consider myself to be a pretty 'alternative' type parent. I am NO June Cleaver. Maybe that's because I had my son young .. I don't know. I am not too strict on certain things, and strict on others. All you can really do is use your better judgment on things and hope you didn't screw up too bad. ;P

As for the whole occult/witchcraft whatever. If someone is interested in those things, it shouldn't matter. We are all entitled to believe in what we want. I personally DO study Wicca and you won't find me puttin' hexes on anyone. It just isn't like that. I can't change the circumstances of anyone else's life but my own. And if someone tells you otherwise ..then they are sniffing too much incense. ;)

Cheese. That is all. :P

Yeah, especially since lack of parental accountability is one of South Park's recurring themes. If you really watch the shows you would see that Kyle, Stan, Kenny, and Cartman are... ok, maybe not Cartman, and definitely not Butters, but the rest of the kids are normal. It's the PARENTS that are messed up.

Yeah, if they use the dining room table as a shrine then how are they going to eat the chicken? ;)

And I think some folks might be taking my perspective a little too far eh? ;)

But I will continue to stand by my original comments. There's a reason that you don't put a bottle of liquor in front of an alcoholic. Along those same lines, I personally believe that witchcraft, magic and things of the occult are "bad" (or whatever word you want to use) and even what appears to be harmless and cheapened versions of that stuff could have severe negative consequences on SOME people. Therefore, I personally believe that Harry Potter should be avoided.

Grant it...if you don't believe that witchcraft is evil or if you believe that Harry Potter is harmless fantasy, you will come to different conclusions. :P

On the subject of parental supervision, I agree generally with what is being said here. It is extremely important for a parent to stay involved in their children's daily life. It's also equally important for parents to supervise their own lives and know that children learn a lot just by watching their parents live their lives.

I like the movies, but could see a Harry Potter get's assimilated book.

Harry looked at the Borg who use to be his secret love Hermilin (sp).

"You will be assimilated, resistance is futile." She hissed.

Harry raised his wand. "baklethia." He incanted, but too late.

Wincing as the nanoprobes peirced his neck, he slumped to the floor.

His last thought before the collective took him was. "Darn, she didn't

even kiss me first." ;)

Zaphod

"Meow is not just another four letter word."

"Of course, neither is Purr."

What about a jolly fat man in a red suit with elves and flying reindeer who gives you presents once a year if you are good? That could be considered occult.

What about a magic bunny who hides easter eggs around your house once a year? That could be considered occult.

What about a magic fairy who leaves money under your pillow when you put a tooth under it? That could be considered occult.

Well, crappitydoo! Everybody already said everything I could have possibly said on this topic! Darn you! lol.

But I went to the ATM tonight and have a couple bucks to spare, so I'll chuck 'em in the pot and type ANYway!

While I have known a few very messed up witchcraft adults, many alcoholics, some drug abusers, and some plain old nutcakes, I can not for a minute imagine my childhood without fantasy fiction. Magic, wizards, rings, wardrobes, hobbits, dragons...

The world will always be filled with nutcakes. Ya can't blame the nut trees or bakers... You can blame parents, society, Canada, drug pushers, advertising, and just plain bad neurophysical wiring. Hopefully with the grace of God, good parenting, and some common sense, most of us will end up okay.

Supervising kids is good. My folks always assumed that as long as I was reading, it was a good thing. I, uh, therefor read many things inappropriate for my age, lol. But I learned a lot of important things VERY early! (They didn't even blink when I read a book called "The Happy Hooker" from the stack my brother brought home from long Navy sea trips).

And I STILL turned out okay! (IMO).

Well anyway, like I said, everybody has already said all this already. Kudos to those of you who take the time to read and watch the things your kids are interested in. Trust that your good instincts will guide them to know the difference between harmless (glorious!) fantasy and inappropriate conclusions.

Canada, eh? Well we're sorry to offend here (maybe even if we're not ;) ), but it really isn't our fault. It all went downhill with Borden.

I read fantasy like crazy, ever since, oh . . . Grade Five. In fact, I think it was Lord of the Rings that got me hooked on fantasy. Now I can't get enough of it. That, and SF, which is why I love Star Trek. Fantasy is great because it lets you discuss social situations otherwise too close to home for comfort. Same with SF.

lol, I only added "Canada" because I saw I was listing the things from Mrs. Broslowski's(sp) song from the South Park movie. For those that have avoided the movie, the parents were looking for something, ANYthing, to blame for their kids' misguidedness and absurdly chose Canada.

(Unfortunately, I love the soundtrack CD from the movie, so these clips pop into my head from time to time, lol).

I meant NO offense, only absurdity. :D
