There is no such thing as Shoreleave-East..there is Shoreleave in Baltimore hosted by the STAT club...

Yeah, there is Shoreleave, which is a big convention in Baltimore, and then there is a small gathering of GMs and the more active simmers that we unofficially call Shoreleave West (because it is west of Shoreleave), but there is no Shoreleave East.

Hey there,

I know most who are currently in STSF that used to attend the Shore Leave convention in Baltimore no longer attend. Personally, I was starting to get tired of not getting a big bang for my buck. But that's just me. ^_^

Naw, I needed more thrills for my dollars too. :D

However, I believe there are a few STSF simmers who will be driving to Shoreleave EAST (don't semantics me, you know which one I mean! ;) rather than flying to Shoreleave West. It's always hard to pick a place, because either coast will draw or cut out people who can or can not drive to it. (It's a money/convenience thing: Driving = easier than flying). Or they may simply prefer the Hunt Valley convention - I guess I'll let them speak for themselves. :)

For me, same as Fred, I need more thrill for my money. The payback for sweating through buggy, outdoor summer concerts and listening to endless mindless hours of kids who don't practice MUST be worth it, lol.

::sigh:: I probably shouldn't be doing this, but I'm going to anyway...

When I went to Shore Leave for the first time two years ago, I didn't go for the convention. I came to meet you guys face-to-face for the first time. I didn't care that there weren't very many speakers, I didn't care that the dealer room was kinda small, I didn't care that most of the celebrities there were guest-stars and non-Trek folks. The point was...I was getting together with my buddies from SFOL. Same deal last year; I knew from experience that the convention itself would pretty much suck (even though I got to hug Teal'c! ::squee!::,) but I went to boogie down with Issues and the Marines and Lursa.

Frankly, I'm a little bit hurt that somehow Baltimore is no longer worthy in the eyes of STSF because there isn't any gambling or Star Trek Experience rides or whatever makes Vegas so much more fascinating than getting together with folks you know. And yes, you guys do that over there, too, but still...there's something to be said for tradition, simplicity and a distractionless environment. I went, and will still go, for the people, not the entertainment.

Eh...don't mind me. I'm just a rambling romantic ^.^ And I should also note that I'm not going to Baltimore this year either, though for personal reasons, not because it's boring or I don't want to see the people that will be attending. Instead, I will hopefully be going to Vegas for the big convention, just because I want to say I've been to the mother of them all.

I know that the folks going West are not simply gong for a more exciting venue - they want to hang with their friends AND get to look at Sodom and Gomorrah just one more time before it gets smote (smoted? smited?) from the Earth again.

And speaking of the big convention, it looks pretty certain that Shore Leave West 2005 *will* be during the big Trek convention in Vegas, so you can all prepare for that waaaay in advance.

I go to our Shoreleave event to be with my friends. I simply prefer it to be in a place that has IMO more to offer in entertainment. Same quality time with my friends, more things I enjoy doing with them.

I am not substituting location over quality time with my friends. I've heard the argument many times that one can not have personal quiet, quality time with buddies in Vegas, and it just... doesn't make sense.

So please don't put thoughts or words into my mouth to imply that I am not going for the people. Romantic tradition is wonderful, but I'd rather be with my lover in a Paris cafe then in a McDonalds off an I-84 exit ramp. Same lover, same amount of time, differnt place.

If you are interested to know what I like to do in Vegas with my pals, I'll be happy to tell you, but to go into it now would seem like a defensive infomercial. ^_^

I will say that if I ever went to this "shoreleave west", it would be on a vacation that I just happened to schedule around the same time - to perhaps meet some folks that I sim with. I wouldn't go to Baltimore because I don't know enough people here to make it worth my while.

Unless someone was going who I have specifically made arrangements to spend time with, I'd be looking forward to the casinos and (more importantly) the free booze. I've heard some bad stories about folks going to these events and finding themselves with no one to be with.

This is just a warning to those who are considering going for the first time...if you don't have a good friend that you've made plans to be with...you'll just waste your time and money. Go to Vegas for Vegas. The STSF folks there are just a perk, if you ever happen to find them ^_^

Well, yeah, I would agree that I would be a waste of time and money, lol.

AND I am the absolute worst social organizer that ever walked the face of the Earth. So if finding me has been difficult, I take full blame, and I am sorry. Know that it is from my own personal incompetance at organization, not a lack of wanting to meet new people.

I *do* like meeting new simmers, as much as hanging with my older comrades.

But as Vex said, I am certainly not worth a vacation to meet. Trust me. Ask my friends. I sleep til 11, and I'm cranky until well after lunch. I do nothing until it's time to go to dinner, at which time all I care about is the food. Okay, I'm "good" for a few hours after dinner, but is that worth airfare, hotel, and cost of food? Hell no!

But if you ARE hanging in Vegas that weekend, Fred has made it easier to find us than the old days. While I am the anti-organizer, he is the uber-organizer. Before, we didn't have a nifty website mapped out (or cell phones for that matter), but now we have his site, and quite honestly, we didn't deviate from it much last year. I think we did one or two off the cuff changes, but not much. And A-9 makes ALL his greet times. (He's as anal as Fred but won't admit it).

Anyway, I've digressed off topic, but I just want to make sure anyone who has felt slighted or offended at either the group decision to hang in Vegas vs. Baltimore, or who has not found us/me to be worth their vacation (lol), knows how I really feel. I love to meet simmers, I miss the people who can't get to Vegas, and I love the new people who can go to Vegas who couldn't get to Baltimore. I miss the crabs, I adore the Vegas restaurants. I don't gamble, I like espressos from the hotel lobby. The pools are to die for. I miss the Saturday night nerd parade, I'm looking forward to the Experience's new Borg ride. (Although 3-D doesn't work for me, so I'm bummed about that).

Okay, I'm done digressing and will leave Knlwatcher to get her topic answers. Eat a pound of crabs for me!

Hey there,

Yeah, well that one picture a few years back explains why. :P

As Huff said, I go because of the friends. I remember (yeah, for those knowing the inside story, that is a stretch) the first year I went. I knew a handful of people who were going to be there from online activities. The first five minutes were a bit...odd...but then my brain realized these were the same nerds I talk to all the time. :)

I simply got tired of spending the money at a venue where, in my opinion, the convention had gotten to big for the organizers to handle. I'm certain they've improved since, but two years ago I remember walking away Saturday night saying "I'm sorry guys, this is ridiculous..." The sad thing is, I do kind of miss getting to see the actors. I always enjoyed that. However, again, can get a nicer environment with better hotel rates for the same amount of money.

And if you don't know someone who's going, I wouldn't spend the money. We are all very welcoming and friendly, don't get me wrong. However, we are there on vacation...not, as Dac said last year, to be your cruise director. :P Though somehow I did end up being the after dinner show... ;)

Ya know what? My very first ShoreLeave I didn't know a soul. Oh, I knew *of* people, but didn't know them. What finally got me there was the fact that so many from a ship I was playing on were attending.

I had, before, went to Vegas for the Arcadia reunion and though I did know one person very well, I didn't know anyone else -- met some INCREDIBLE people of whom I have life long friendships with, so I thought to myself ... If I met some great people through the Arcadia, I bet I'll meet some really great people through this gathering too.

Don't get me wrong, I was nervous as hell, going out there not knowing a soul (as my mom put it, "You're going to end up just like DC intern, Chandra something or other" Mothers.

It didn't take long before I fell into place with Blu, Huff, Fred, Atragon and many others. From that venue I have come away with life long friends, an annual sabatical that I call my own, and reason to sit my rear in a cabana by the pool for four hours and not feel one bit guilty for making the boys run for drinks.

Come one, Come all.

What I meant was that since we were calling Vegas "Shoreleave west", that Baltimore would be referred to "Shoreleave East". I had only gone twice, and had very much enjoyed just hanging out with folks and with the writers and actors. The only reason I havent returned yet is that I never had the money. I was too involved with my father. But, now that I finally can go again, it seems everyone is going to meet accross the country. I can say, I am very disappointed. But, I still hope you all have a good time. Ill just have to settle with harrassing you all online. =0]
