Help Build a 22nd Century Reference

Once again, thanks to everyone who's contributed logs to Challenger. There are some other ways you can also chip in...

One of the things we want to do for the sim is to put together a reference file of the differences between the 22nd century of Enterprise and the later centuries of TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. As is the case with the design of the ship, we want the forum's input on this.

This thread is the place to discuss what separates Enterprise from the rest of the Star Trek's. It can be something about Earth and Starfleet, a certain technology, an alien race, or just any general difference you can think of. You can point something out, comment on something that someone else has mentioned, ask about something you aren't sure of, or discuss any discrepancies that have arisen on the shows.

By the time Challenger launches, we'll sort everything out and post the completed reference on our website. :D

I doubt such a thing exists yet, but are there any books or articles or anything like that on this time that can be considered "cannon"?

I'm not aware of any reference books that have been published... and I don't think the Encyclopedia has been updated with Enterprise info. There are some reference materials on the web, but it's mostly on fansites, nothing cannon

Hence the reason we want to put this reference together. Maybe we can take an encyclopedia approach... anyone who wants to contribute can write up an entry.

Ok thank you Vex, so the NX05 is just like the ship that looks like that columbia and enterprise right? Not the REAL challenger seen in ... i can't remember the episode.

This is a time i found, not sure if its accurate though.

PS. I think it was in "Twlight"

PSS. Anyways if you want to see a picture of Challenger (The real class ship) Pm me.

Yes, if it's an NX ship it should look like the other NX ships.

As for canon material, the show itself is the best bet, and the differences we've seen. I think that the hardest part will be not establishing what's different from the future Treks, but what's different from today. The technology has obviously advanced, but everything is much closer to our present and startlingly similar. Although Earth went through a third world war, it's obvious that not everything was completely destroyed.

One of the things that's been perplexing me, in relation to my character, is the state of the Internet. So in my logs I shortened it to the Net (as it is much called now) and mentioned it off hand. Frankly, I can't see why anyone would discard the Net as a primary means of telecommunication, especially with computers. Even WWIII didn't obliterate computers or satellites, but the Net is probably much different.

And the lack of a voice interface was a smart move, but slightly difficult in that we have voice interfaces, albeit unreliable ones, today. I used a voice interface in my logs, but that may be just for programming. So any ideas why a voice interface wasn't around then, other than the fact that during TOS the interfaces were worse than they are now, in the 21st century?

There was a telecommunications network featured in the DS9 episode...uh...the one where Sisko goes back in time and ends up taking the place of this revolutionary guy in a poor camp.

Maybe you could use that as a frame of reference.

I believe that Earth had only Warp 5 capability (unless you were talking about the technology of other races).

Thanks for the idea, Vex. Yes, the Net probably came under total government control after the Earth was "united." People could still maintain their personal Netspace, but the Net was no longer a warren of crime-infested space that it was in the early 21st century. (This is starting to sound like an entry, so I'm just going to go for it).

The innovations in computers made the Net faster, smarter, and easier to control. No longer did download/upload speeds vary by connection; subspace pulses from satellites offered access so nearly instantaneous that it made no difference. The Net became easier to use as search engines evolved in a way that keywords were no longer required.

As of the middle of the 22nd century, the Net is still Earth's primary form of global telecommunication. Anyone with access to a computer connected to the Net can automatically connect with any other computer.

Computers on ships, either civilian or Starfleet, cannot be connected to the Net because of space-time relativistic differences in acceleration. They can, however, make momentary connections if needed.

The Martian and Lunar colonies have their own independent Nets which are connected to the EarthNet, these Nets however are again limited by orbital positions.

(As for the voice interface, just wait).

Here it is: the voice interface.

Keep in mind that much of the construction work to do with the NX-project is civilian contracted. That's the way the military does it today, and this is apparent in episodes of TNG, DS9, and VOY. The consoles and equipment on civilian and Starfleet ships appear the same, as if the same company made them.

So here's my thought: Starfleet doesn't include voice interfaces because at this time they are a security risk. Perhaps they offer a backdoor into the system by giving anyone with a transmitter access to a computer. Theoretically, carefully modulated sonic pulses could harm the computer if they were sent through a vocal interface. (They could harm the computer's circuitry if emitted normally, of course, but this would probably grant more control).

But civilians can use them. And Rawel (my character) uses it not built into the computer, but in the interface between the Challenger software and himself (the software being inside another computer at the moment).

Just a thought.

I like the security consideration on the voice interface. :D Good example of how to explain a possible tech discrepancy.

Another suggestion: we've got so many enemies. But I noticed that (unless I missed that topic) Earth has no rebel faction, other than obese bureaucrats with digital watches.

So Earth now has rebels in technicolor, humans spanning the solar system who are ready to do whatever it takes to prevent the Challenger launch. Good luck guys.

P.S. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're out of the loop.

Just kidding, just read my latest log in the Challenger forum. Or you can dance around like a crazy ostrich on one leg . . . but that might not help.

Do non-crazy ostriches dance different?

True but this is a new time for starfleet and every one wants a piece of the action.

Non-crazy ostriches would prefer interpretative dance.

What is really interesting is that both the Andorains and the (supposedly pacifistic) Vulcans both have a more capable military than Starfleet, and yet Starfleet will be chosen as the organization the new Federation will adopt.

::Whispers: The Federation is a HUMAN organization! and runs away before Starfleet security arrests him::

Maybe something happens between 2154 and 2161 that tips everything in Starfleet's favour, politically.

Hey there,

Not really...not when you look at the diplomatic aspect of it. When you even look at TOS, which takes place one hundred years after the Federation is established, the Vulcans and Andorians still can barely stay in the same room without causing an incident. The ability to create a diplomatic buffer between the two, allowing them to work together towards the same goal would be a very powerful tool.

Changing an expression I've heard several times, the Vulcans and Andorians might have the raw materials but the Humans are the ones who bring it all together. Let's not forget though, there were what...four or five founding members of the UFP?

Five. The fifth were the Caitians. See the original FASA information dated 1966/1983for the original role playing games.

Hey there,

You sure? I could have sworn it was someone else, according to something actually stated in either TOS or TNG. Anywho...

I'm a little fascinated at the fact, within the play-by-message board setup of the Challenger right now...no one on Earth seems concerned about the fact you have 9 Vulcan Heavy Cruisers sitting on the edge of the system nor the fact no one's detected almost 20 Andorian vessels sitting just a day away. :D

I would imagine that the Andorians are hiding themselves. If not, then somebody should bust them. Because if they are just sitting there, waiting to be detected, they deserve to be detected.

The Romulan War will probably have a big impact on the formation of the Federation.

Yes, so maybe Starfleet played a significant role as a neutral training group for both Vulcans and Andorians.
