Okay, I'm not going to comment on the politics, but I have to say one thing...

Unexpected???

He was 93 and has had Alzeimer's Disease for years, I wonder if the news didn't surprise some people along the lines of, "Ohh, I didn't realize he was still alive."

Hey there,

I am a great admirer of President Ronald Reagan. I am equally inspired by how former First Lady Nancy Reagan has stood by his side the past ten years, watching her husband slowly fall apart due to Alzheimer's Disease. Having had a relative go thru something quite similar, I know how disgustingly horrible it is.

President Reagan broke many barriers and records, not the least of which is the fact he finally passed on to the Almighty at 93...an age no former President has ever reached.

While I am personally saddened by his passing, I must also feel that it will bring some relief to his family...specifically Nancy. In her eyes, in many ways, the man she fell in love with vanished years ago. Now, in some fashion, she can live the rest of her life in peace.

Ronald Reagan left office as the most popular President in the history of modern polling within the United States of America. To many, myself included, he ranks with the likes of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Regardless of your view of history, he was the man that brought about the destruction of the iron curtain.

America has indeed lost a great man...but in my eyes, the world has as well.

I too will not comment on the politics of things, but I will say this. President Reagan was a great man, and one of the few Republicans that I admired. I had heard that the former Presidents health was going downhill and his passing came as no surprise to me, all of his family and most Americans knew his time was coming.

He did a lot for the world, and for this country, even though some of his methods were a bit unorthadox. He was a simple man, and I believe, a very intellegent man and he would stand his ground on anything, and that is why I respected him. Whenever he said something he belived it, and he would never change his mind. He was the epitome of Leadership.

He will be missed by all.

A wonderful president with a terrible task... he will be missed greatly by the American people. Reagan's foreign affair tactics were some of the best of any American president, mainly in preventing the spread of Communism (which was deamed necessary in U.S. politics).

The United States has lost a leader who should never be forgotten.

Allow me to share a few selected quotes from the late great President Reagan:

"In closing let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead." — Nov. 5, 1994,

"So, you can see why, to me, the story of these last eight years and this presidency goes far beyond any personal concerns. It is a continuation, really, of a far larger story, a story of a people and a cause. A cause that, from our earliest beginnings, has defined us as a nation and given purpose to our national existence. The hope of human freedom, the quest for it, the achievement of it, is the American saga." — Last weekly radio address as president, Jan. 14, 1989.

"The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and `slipped the surly bonds of earth' to `touch the face of God.'" — After shuttle disaster, Jan. 28, 1986.

"If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate ... open this gate ... tear down this wall." — June 1987 speech at Brandenberg Gate in Berlin. Remarks addressed to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Reagan was the 2nd best President of the United States.

He revived the spirit and moral of America, won the Cold War, and repaired a horrible economy.

It is a sad day for America. A great person--a great American and a great President has died.

At least his family is out of the misery and trouble of Alzheimers and him remember NOTHING.

He accomplished many great things. His speaking skills unmatched by all since Hitler (even though I hate Hitler).

Unfortuantly, although he was lived by many, he is one of the most hated--perhaps not personally, but still...--by the Liberals next to President Bush 43 (now.)

Hats off and salute Ronald Reagan as he rises up into heaven for eternal life in paradise...

There are some men that just distinguish themselves in history, Ronald Reagan was one.

To me, his death did take me by surprise, not because I didn't know of his conditition, but because I didn't normally dwell upon it. When my father shared the news with me, I sat there with a joyful silence, glad that his suffering was over and that he was now rejoicing with the angels.

May he be remembered, not by the policies he helped see pass or the political positions he took, but by the number of people he reached out to and touched and his unquenchable desire to stand up for righteousness.

My prayers go out to Mrs. Reagan, someone whom I revere especially because she stood by her husband and took care of him even when the disease took all memory of her from him.

May God Bless the Reagans richly for what they brought this country and the legacy they leave behind.

This is even more remarkable when you consider that he was also the oldest President we ever had at the time he took office.

I was really sad to learn about this. While I am not a member of his political party, I will always remember that I looked up to him when I was a child .. and even now, hearing his voice, it instills a sense of security in this country. We can only hope to have more leaders like him (and really, we need it.) .. may he rest in peace. I'll be lighting a candle tonight.

I agree. And although I am not old enough to remember his Presidency, I honor him for his great work.

Now, although he may not be like Reagan, Bush is that person that we need in this time.

Ronald Reagan is has left us a long time ago. His body is only what left yesturday. It is a good thing for him in his family for the last years of his life were sadly more of suffering then what they were truly of life.

I can add in comments if I want. It is my opinion that Bush is the closest person to Reagan at this time.

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

However, as we have seen with other threads, if people's stated opinions start to cause problems with other members, the thread may be closed and/or deleted. Once again, we are dipping into the dangerous areas of religion and politics (hmm, church and state).

Remember that this is not a street corner and free speech is NOT guaranteed here. It doesn't mean we will change anyone's posts or anyone's mind - it just means that certain discussions may be curtailed in order to better foster a sense of community.

Okay, well it was just a quick statement of my opinion, and that is all. Now I say that we all drop it.

Back to Reagan...

Truly, however, Reagan was already gone years ago...

This is a post from another post, but hey, I'll post it here to since it intertwines with this topic.

First, now that I know how to spell Reagan, (thanks Van Roy (there, I fixed it)) I'll tell you my idea.

Perhaps, maybe we could have all our Friday academy sims name their ship USS Reagan, in honor of our day of mourning.

This would be a nice remorial for him, and it would make volchdusema and everyone else happy, but, the ship might have to actually survive, so maybe we should scratch this idea. ^_^

yeah...thanks Von Roy ^_^

Now...I have purposefully waited to post to this thread...for a couple reasons.

As I think back to '81, I remember the assasination attempt. I couldnt believe someone would try to kill our president. Later, after his recovery, I remember seeing him as kind of...indestructible. The Challenger incident saddening us all..and there he was...grieving with the rest of us..but comforting us as well..like a father.

Reagan, always modest, said he was not a great communicator, just that he had communicated great things. This is one of the few things I disagreed with him on...he was a great communicator. Which is what made his illness so ironic..and so cruel.

I have lost a loved one to that illness. Though she still draws breathe, she has no idea who I am...or that she raised me. Its a vicious little disease that robs you of your loved ones before they die. I respect Nancy for her commitment to her lifes love...and I hope that she , too, may join him soon...

Im sure he now has many great things to communicate to her...

God Speed, Mr. President...
