Reaching out to the Darkness

Tovan looked up, with his helmet lighting dimmed he could only see a few features above him. Darkness, ghostly figures and the heavy payload in his left hand, this was one to see things in this perspective. The teamed climbed, with Sovak in a makeshift sling and carried up, slowly. The process of stepping, grabing, griping and resetting seemed like an enternity. This was as well as a time for Tovan to thought things through.

Where were we? Thought, and the answer came through, Mars, Ganges Chasma. Why were we here? To investigate strange signals 4 miles below the surface. What had happened? Sovak was strucked by an energy burst, and the team was carrying him back up to the ship. More questions came to mind and as fast as they came, as fast as they were answered. Step, grab, grip, reset.

A few minutes had passed and the away team only ascended a couple of meters, Tovan tried his suit's communication, to contact any one who's out there. Commander Precip? Admiral? He said into the com but no one answered. He could have only pondered of what is happening to the signals but it all seems connected to Sovak, they could have communicated at their current dept to the third team above but why couldn't they? It started when Sovak was strucked.

Half an hour later, the team was fatigued, Commander Farrington had send word for rest. While this free time Tovan tried to communicate with the outside world again. Commander Precip? Admiral? Anyone out there? He said once again in to the com, no one answered. He looked at the tricorder, but it only showed that the signals were absorbed into the dark void above and around. Why was this happening? Tovan had no logical answer. He was concern for the team's and Sovak's wellfare, but the clock was ticking. The rest was over, the team resumed their climb out of the darkness.

Step, grab, grip, reset, step grab, grip, step, grip. The motion seemed autonomous, like clockwork the team ventured up, no communication was establised still. The team climbed upward. One, two, three, four, step, grab, grip, reset, one two, one two, Precip, Atragon, Sovak, Ship, one two, one two.

After what it seemed to be a life time of climbing, Commander Precip finally appeared out of the dense dark filled void and in to the warmer lighted surroundings. His team soon took over and relieved the first of their tetidous task for ascend. Tovan was not tired, he continued, by himself, up towards the 1/4 point where Ensign Law was waiting. Waiting for a ghostly figure to be transformed into a Vulcan officer. Out of the Void, out of the darkness. Tovan climbed.

One two one two one two three four, one two, one two, Step, grab, grip, step, reset, step grab, grip step, reset. The monotonous climbing continued, not only on Sovak's Level but also Tovan's level and the other members of the away team. Tovan peered up, a ghostly figure was on the quarter way ledge, waiting waiting. Tovan climbed faster, ascending out of the Dark void, out of guilt, out of darkness. Finally, Ensign Law was as solid as ice, he was real, not a ghostly figure, but real. Law threw a cable to Tovan, like a old man grasping on to life, like a sailor grasping on to a piece of his sunk ship, and like a blind man holding on to a invisible anchor, Tovan grab hold of the cable and climbed up. One two one two one two. His legs pumped, fatigued and pumped again. He was on the ledge.

He gave Law a nod of appreciation and looked back down. Many Ghostly figures with their helmet lighting dimmed appeared. Out of the Darkness, the dead silent void. One two, one two, step, grip, step, grip.

One two three four, the hour dragged on, the rest of the team climbed and ascended up, with Sovak grasping onto life with them.
