What is really funny is the #1 movie right now, at least here on the Left Coast, is Farenheit 9/11. It wasn't in the poll and no one listed it as their "other" choice.

I guess we were all wrong on this one.

:P <-- Me, a Michael Moore fan in glee

Well F-9/11 (Since I hate typing out the full name since I always mess it up) has done extremely well in the theaters all around the country. It's already grossed over $100 Million domestically in it's 5 weeks of release, and I'm sure it will do well in the coming weeks and when it comes out on DVD/VHS.

Now, the whole discussion going on about it (Controversies aside) is that the $100 Million mark is unprecidented for a documentary. Most studios have found that documentaries are not the biggest cash cow (i.e. Your Shrek's and Spider-mans).

While I have been extremely impressed by the turnout to the movie, the movie isn't in the class of our big blockbusters, money wise. And as much as I like to comment on films, I won't comment on politics of the F-9/11. I thought it was a bias, one-sided film, I will admit that much, but needless to say I throughly enjoyed it and found it to be very powerful and gripping at points.

What many people have been discussing mostly is how there has been no official rebuttal on some of the key points made in documentary, and also the actions of many opponents of the film. This has what has lead to all the debates that have been sparking up, and also the huge turnout to film.

Now I can go on and on, but since I don't want to get smitten anytime soon I will go and quietly sit in my corner.

I'd be more than happy to discuss what I thought of the film and my own personal views on it, in private. Feel free to write me a message or bother me in PM's or on AIM, I always love talking about any movie with anyone. :P

Hey there,

I'm not going to get into the politics of it all, but shortly after the film was released events in the real world tossed a few gernades in several of the key points made in the "documentary." In addition, since it's release I've heard quite a bit about different individuals stating their words were taken out of context, spliced together, etc. I mean, leading up to it Michael Moore was forced to go from saying the film was a documentary, to a political editorial to finally more along the lines of a political cartoon. :P

In any event, I know where I live the movie never got anywhere close to number one (this being the state of Florida) and I personally have no desire to see it. To each his own I suppose. :P

On a somewhat related topic, any thoughts on this Thunderbirds movie Johnathan Frakes directed? I've never really been into the series, but do recall hearing about it over the years.

Domestic Box Office Numbers for 2004 (As of July 26):

1) Shrek 2: $430,317,578

3) Spider-man 2: $332,378,153

4) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: $242,349,326

Worldwide Box Office Numbers for 2004 (As of July 28) in the Millions:

1) Shrek 2: $774.2

2) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: $701.3

4) Spider-man 2: $597.4

This has always bothered me slightly....

We judge a movie's sucess and popularity based on how much money it makes. Shrek 2 has broken the record held by Nemo which was held by I-Don't-Know. Only problem I see with this is that ticket prices and inflation constantly make those numbers rise regardless of how many people are actually watching it. I don't suppose there are any sites out there that compare the popularity of movies based on the number of tickets sold, 'cause that would be a little more...umm...accurate assessment of the popularity of a film, I think ^.^

And please, no comments about the movie industry being a business and because of that they use profits for an assessment of worth for movies, because I am both aware of that fact and am choosing as a movie-watcher to ignore it, because I care about how many butts are in those seats.

Actually Fred, you'd be surprised. As I too live in the Sunshine state I have found the turnout here shocking. In the first few days of release, most of the showtimes in the cinema's around the town were sold out. I was smart of course and saw the first showing of the film, in the morning, on the Saturday of it's opening weekend.

An interesting note about the film, it only opened in 868 theaters across the nation during it's debut. And it grossed an impressive $23.9 Million, in the terms of a documentary. Now, if you do the math, that's about $27,600 a theater. Now fast forward to a week later when Spider-man 2 opened. It about on about 4152 theaters, one of the largest ever, and grossed a wopping $115.2 Million on it's 3 day opening weekend. Now, if you do the math, that's about $27,900 a theater.

As you see, the film shouldn't be taken oh so lightly, especially in Florida where a good number of theaters were playing the fim :P.

The numbers speak for themselves, especially for those of us who saw Spider-man 2 during it's opening weekend...

To answer this question, the only buzz I've actually heard on Thunderbirds has not been all to good. They say the film looks great, but the story and the characters are rather lackluster. To put it in basic terms, it's a kids movie and should entertain the younger audiances :P. Hope it helps!

I have never seen the series, but even for someone who isn't a fan it seems wrong without the puppets :P

Actually on BoxOfficeMojo.com they have a list that keeps track of the box office, in which the factor how much a film actually made by today's standards due to inflation.

Here's part of the list :P

1 Gone With the Wind: $1,240,554,000; $198,676,459

2 Star Wars: $1,093,654,300; $460,998,007

3 The Sound of Music: $874,430,400; $158,671,368

4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial: $870,985,600; $435,110,554

5 The Ten Commandments: $804,340,000; $65,500,000

These numbers are only the domestic numbers, they are not the worldwide numbers. The numbers you see in bold is the actual take of the films when the opened, and the larger numbers is what that actual value(In bold) would equal today.

It really is quite an interesting list, and BoxOfficeMojo.com tries to update it as often as they can. :P

And it's opening week again here too, as I decided to wait for this.....

Spiderman II in IMAX !

(And the best part is, the theater has subwoofers built into the seats to enhance the sound and feel of the movie. It made StarWars better, Harry Potter and Apollo 13, not to mention NASCAR: The IMAX Experience.)

Hey there,

Well, I guess it's an age thing, but I don't think the ticket prices are that bad off...considering two things.

First, where I live you can go to a daytime show for $6.50 at a place with stadium seating, etc.

Second, I'll pay the money as long as I get my money's worth. By that I mean, you had better not be charging me that for a film that will only last an hour and twenty-five minutes. If you look, on average, films are getting longer and longer. I've been to quite a few recently and I think their average running time was about two hours.

For that, I'll pay the money. Personally, I don't think Hollywood should be afraid to make more films that are three hours long. Heck, didn't seem to bother those of us who saw Lord Of The Rings. I can think of quite a few films which would be great if they'd added more detail, others that would have been even better than they were if the same was done.

As for ticket prices, I guess it would depend on where you go. At least here, I believe movies are cheaper than the US.. some prices are like $12, but other ones, like the theatre near me is $7.50, with a matinee and Tuesday price of $4.25. (All Figures in Canadian Dollars). But the movies this summer have been pretty darn good, so hey, so long as it's worth it, it's all good. As for what'kll be the smash hit, I'll still stick with Spiderman II, or Shrek II.

Hmm Garfield rocks but isn't playing anymore. The Day After Tomorrow was a hit and Alien Vs. Predator will rule the summer box office cuz Predator left a clifhanger and there's quite a few out there who are into aliens and/or are Alien fans and Predator fans. My question is is, do you think they will have California's governor in this one? Afterall, he did say "I'll be back." :D

Ahh, the Village, another movie, I'd like to go see.. that and AVp, despite of what the critic's have to say. Those two are probably the only worth-while movies to see now in the theatres.
