Just for fun..shall we attempt to predict the future for this summers box office?

Will anyone withstand the media hype for SpiderMan 2? Will the wall crawlers sequel be the summer hit..or will another leave it without any of its eight legs to stand on?

Make your predictions, here...

Spider Man all the way man! The first one was immensly popular, and I know alot of people (including me) can't wait to see the sequel. I don't see anything else even coming close.

Well as the head movie geek on the boards (Actually I haven't been catching as many movies as I should as of late to carry the title ). I mean come on there have been only two films over the last five months that have gotten a ounce of consideration at my year end top ten list at that has been Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Jim Carrey is the best), and Kill Bill Vol. 2(::Drool:: Uma...). I must throw in my two cents into the fray. :P

I will openly proclaim that the top three contenders, from what I have seen so far (Still sifting threw all the upcoming Summer movies) to be the King of the summer box office will be between Spider-Man 2, Shrek 2, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Now as to why. :)

Spider-man 2 is following in the coatails of the hugely popular, and what I thought was an okay movie, Spider-man. Now sequels have this horrible curse to crash and burn and never even reach the level of it's predecessor, and few (And I do mean very, very, very few) surpass there predecessors popularity wise and box office wise. So as Spider-man was very popular in the states I'll expect it to do well, but will it succumb to the sequel curse?? We shall have to wait and see.

Now onto Shrek 2, the buzz about the sequel to everyone's favorite Ogre and talking Donkey has been huge. People have loved it and have been comparing it to the original. Some have even said that it may surpass the original (Which I somewhat doubt). Since the little kiddies and parents love Shrek expect this one to be a big contender to be the King this summer.

Now onto what I believe may be the favorite and king of the summer, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. From the clips and trailers I've seen this is poised to be the best Potter film to date (As it is many people's favorite book of the 5 so far, mine is the Goblet of Fire ;)). Alfonso Cuaron (Harts War, Y Tu Mama Tambien) has done a wonderful job directing the film, it looks absoluetly astonishing. From all the buzz I've heard so far, this is poised to be the king of the summer box office simply due to the franchise's popularity and the buzz about it.

Now, ahem, I only noticed one of my three contenders on the poll. And as I have this horrible tendency to play favorites (i.e. Me going on about Return of the King) I'll have to go with Harry Potter on this one, so my vote goes to Other. :)

King Arthur, that looks like a sweet movie based on actual history and not the legend

Well, John...thats why I put "other" there...I was sure I would leave off some contenders...

Especially since I dont care for Harry Potter...

Shrek totally slipped my mind...

Good calls all around...

It wasn't mentioned in your poll so I had to vote Other.

Shrek2 Probably will obliterate all this summer. Be aware of the cat character in this film.

Is it too late to change my mind? Shrek II slipped my mind as well when I first posted. Ya know, I'm seeing Shrek everywhere, shoot just about every other commercial in it has Shrek and Donkey in it. I think it's gonna rake in alot of Oscars next March and tons more money.

King Arthur, that looks like a sweet movie based on actual history and not the legend

::had a whole, long rebuttal to this planned, decides against it::

I will only say this: there is no account of Arthur that is factual. There is no real history of Arthur. There is only a series of traditions and legends (maybe a couple of real people) that have come together in what we know as the Arthurian legend today. The only thing that will make this movie "accurate" is the fact that they're throwing Arthur and various other characters into half-way plausible roles (though the role of Guinevere, from what I've seen, is a SERIOUS departure from both historical facts of the time and the characterization seen in the legends) in a half-way plausible timeframe.

That said, I'm going to go see this movie and I think I'm going to like it. Why? Because I like different adaptations of the Arthurian legend. But I'm not going to delude myself into thinking that Hollywood will put out anything historically accurate during the summer blockbuster binge.

::mutters:: Guinevere as a Pict, gimme a break...

Oh, and my vote is for Shrek 2. Just because I like Shrek ;)

First of all, this summer is going to be a major disappointment over last summer.

However, the only one I am truly wating to come out is Alien vs. Predator.

I don't like this whole guinevere the warrior queen angle they're going for, they're turning her into boadiccea. And the plot looks as THIN as the paper it was wriiten on. Naaaah, i want an arthur film with full armoured knights, big battles ala braveheart (not lotr) oh and a dragon, the grail bla bla bla...all we got was first knight with richard gere...::sigh:

Heh, you know I wouldn't be surprised at all if the outcome of this movie is a tie just like Freddie vs. Jason

lol, Arthur will be okay as long as I don't have to suffer another friggin movie with Sean Connery!

Shrek 2... yep, looking forward to that!

And a flop at the box office, but one I will love is the Day after Tomorrow. I LOVE doomsday-everybody-but-a-few-dies movies! What do you do now when only one percent of the population is alive in a ruined world??? Yeah! ::owns The Stand on DVD::

I still predict Spiderman as the king. I think the sequal will be better since they don't have to work their way through the whole spider-bite history and can have the luxury of a long twisted new plot. And more CG flying... And more JJ Jamison(sp), lol.

That is my concern...especially since the trailer doesnt give you that much. I know the premise is a group of Xenomorphs are found in the Arctic (or Antarctic) and before things get ugly a young (pride) of Predators shows up..with the poor humans stuck in the middle...I dont know if it will beat Aliens (BEST) but they had to get away from Ripley to continue the franchise. We shall see.

Oh, I saw a promo for the Manchurian Candidate....looks very interesting.

Ready for some irony...

I am surprised that noone has voted for M Night Shama-lama-dingdongs new flick. Especially given the success of "I see Dead People" and Signs.

But here is an interesting twist. Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) will star in the Village. Now if the movie is successful and can stay the course two weeks...it will be in theaters the same time AVP (Alien Vs Predator) opens....Sooooooo ;)

Sigourney will be fighting aliens...once again.

That's kinda like what happened the one time a Friday the 13th movie was released the same season a Nightmare on Elm Street movie was released. Back then the studios didn't try to pull this "Let's release a new movie every weekend so people go every weekend" crap.

Hey there,

I honestly think the next Harry Potter movie will dominate over the summer months. I don't think any other films will have attendance similiar to to. ::shrug::

Blasphemy!!!!! And here...I had thought you had taste. ::worried now on her thoughts on Mel Gibson as well:: Anything with Sean or Mel is good!

Oh....and Shrek 2 and Harry Potter will be big. The kids already had me get them advanced tickets a few weeks ago for both of those movies, and now we're waiting until next week when our IMAX with the sensor seats, puts Harry Potter on sale so we can go with the motion seats as well.

Signs was an absolute laugh riot. The plastic children were the best

I liked Signs. I didnt see any plastic children

I also notice half of the movies you have listed there are sequels to something. Alien, Catwoman (from batman), Spiderman 2, etc, oy.

Speaking of Catwoman...I saw the previews to this. This, in my opinion, is going to be a really stupid movie. Why is catwoman wearing a bikini? It gets my lame movie premise of the month award.
