STSF Map

Hey Fred, the map looks great, but a quick comment:

The letters for the alpha quadrant are really small... almost to the point of being unreadable. Is that a setting problem on my computer, or a glitch?

To reply to my own topic (Thanks Marris!)

If you right click and select Zoom In from the drop down menu, you can zoom into the map to view a section larger.

And if you're looking for Excal, we're in the gamma quadrant. :-)

Use the up and down arrow keys to zoom in and out.

I think this is a great new feature. I dont know how hard it would be to update this several times a month though, gathering everyones locations and rearranging the images in the fla file.

I take it this is your work Fred? Fantastic job!

Now I'm going to start getting greedy. There are a few additional features I'd like to see.

1) Buttons to toggle map features. Example, turning on-off planet icons and names, toggling on-off starbases.

2) Quadrant axis lines to show where the quadrant boundaries are, which could also be toggled, since Romulan space is mostly in the Beta quadrant I think?

3) A "show primary only" button that would hide all the others but show just Earth, Romulus, major Starbases, etc. I understand this might not be possible if they're all 1 clip.

4) Territory Labels...saying "Klingon Territory" or "Romulan Territory" stuff like that.

5) The wormhole is featured in the gamma quadrant but not in the alpha quadrant. If you had the wormhole clip as a button that when you clicked the wormhole it passed you between the two quadrants, that would be neat.

6) Center the map clip as you zoom in, rather than it remaining still and scaling out from its center location. That might be tough...dont know if you want to mess with the math codes to make that work.

7) The fade-in of all the labels is neat but it could use to be faster...when toggling between maps you have to wait for everything to fade in.

Great job <_<

Greedy, indeed! But you have a point on the groupings. Not sure what language was used, but it "should be" simple enough to write code to display starbases and sims only...planets and sims only, etc.

Way cool, Fred. Kudos to all involved.

Hey there,

Well, answering your questions Vex.... ;)

I think this is a great new feature. I dont know how hard it would be to update this several times a month though, gathering everyones locations and rearranging the images in the fla file.

Since you've worked with Flash, this might make sense to you. It really won't be. It involves editing one movie clip within the actual file. Each of the ships (symbols + names) are their own movie clips, so it's really simply a matter of moving icons. As for gathering the information, about every two weeks there will be e-mail communication between the COs and I.

1) Buttons to toggle map features. Example, turning on-off planet icons and names, toggling on-off starbases.

Is planned. Regretfully, adding this feature is going to require an almost complete redesign of the map. At the moment, I don't have another free two months. But at some point in the future you can expect this. Also is my answer for number 3.

2) Quadrant axis lines to show where the quadrant boundaries are, which could also be toggled, since Romulan space is mostly in the Beta quadrant I think?

It is a thought, though my concern with inserting it would be how to clearly label it. The Alpha/Beta Quadrant splits right down the middle of the Sol system...so. It is a thought...though as for the toggle ability I'll point to my answer to Number 1.

5) The wormhole is featured in the gamma quadrant but not in the alpha quadrant. If you had the wormhole clip as a button that when you clicked the wormhole it passed you between the two quadrants, that would be neat.

I had considered this but given the fact nothing else on the map proper is clickable, was concerned no one would find it! ^_^

6) Center the map clip as you zoom in, rather than it remaining still and scaling out from its center location. That might be tough...dont know if you want to mess with the math codes to make that work.

This was present in earlier versions of the map. It really made it difficult to navigate at the different zoom levels and often caused more confusion than it was worth. <_<

7) The fade-in of all the labels is neat but it could use to be faster...when toggling between maps you have to wait for everything to fade in.

Something I've been contemplating change in later versions.

Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Hey! Where's "the middle of nowhere/we don't know where the heck we are?"

That's where Arcadia is. ;-)

The QoB too. We're in the Delta Quadrant! <_<

Well atleast that's somwhere Van Roy. We are literally in the middle of 'nowhere'. No stars, planets, anything.

And we have a Borg Cube sitting on our doorstep, that 'appears' to be abandoned....

How exciting. <_<

My theory is if you could connect the QoB (somewhere in Delta) with the Arcadia (unknown) and the Manticore (Sol) you would get a triangle with Planet Garnoopy at the center. <_<

Isn't the Qob in the Alpha Quadrant on the outer edge?

You know what would be really neat? Being able to zoom in so close you can see the crew in the windows of their ships.

Where did the Arcadia go?

Ahh, Tovan... the Arcadia's so lost we're off the scale! Or in this case off the map. as anderson said, we're in the middle of nowhere, with no warp drive, no shields, limited rations.. I have a good feeling we'll stay off the map for a long, long time indeed. <_< Edit: Oh yeah.. almost forgot. The map looks great Freddie. I tip my hat to you and your efforts. ;) ::tips hat::

Arcadia, Lost in a distant part of the galaxy, with limited power and rations, can the crew survive long enough to win the million dollars? Stay tune.

Yes, the Qob is in the Alpha Quadrant, slightly closer to home than Voyager was, but basically along the same path (if they hadn't found the conduit and were still flying along)

I have NO idea where the Hood is. Fred, go ahead and put it wherever you want (somewhere along the TOS Frontier) and name the sector "Chartreuse" lol.
