have trekkies went too far

If not, you should watch the trailers at startrek.com.

On to the point. Have we trekkies went too far? Have we really totally emerce ourselves with startrek? If you been to a convention you'd know what i mean. But are they or us went too far? Well i don't think so. But i wanna hear your opinions :) ::set up comment shields::

That's a difficult question for STSF to answer. You have people here who sim once a week, or post a message to this board once in a while, watch the shows and movies, and that is the extent of their Trek involvement. Then you have those "other" fans like KBear, and if you read her "Featured GM" write-up about being pulled over while in uniform you know what I mean.

As simmers we are probably more involved in Trek than most of the fan base, but most of us are also less involved than those who go to conventions in full costume.

Disregard this. I thought by "trekkies" you meant fans. I didn't know you were talking about the movie.

Hey there,

Several years ago (don't actually remember when) heard a saying I think is very true: Star Trek fans aren't weird. They aren't freaks or people who need to get a life. They are the same as those who attend football games in -20 below, faces painted their team's color, screaming and yelling with a giant "Number 1" sign attached to the left hand.

I think this is the truth, plain and simple. As to the movie Trekkies, I believe it was a complete slap in the face of fans. Denise Crosby did an excellent job of creating a film that mock people who watched the show. It is true, there is that 0.05% of people who would actually go to a Federal court room wearing a phaser. That's what many people see as being a Trek fan. But you know what? Looking back at that football game I mentioned earlier, how many fans are sitting there shirtless with team colors painted on the chests? Do they represent the majority? If a film, only showing those people, was produced and watched by someone who'd never seen American football...would they not think that's how all fans acted? Would that assumption be factual or an attempt to distort reality by the film's author?

I'll let you be the judge of that one.

If you want to talk about a film which I personally feel was a solid tribute to Star Trek and it's fans, I point to Galaxy Quest. As for Trekkies, I did see it in a theatre with a relative...and there were only two other people there. Almost walked out several times, but stayed just to listen to the interviews with the actors. Have no intention of actually seeing Trekkies 2 anytime soon.

Geeze lighten up, I think those obsessed crazy people add to the appeal of Star Trek and how accepting it is. I think the movie Trekkies is a great idea, I have no idea how you can find it offensive. The only people who should be offended are those people who appeared in that movie and have those comments said about them.

Well, unless you went to an independent film festival you wouldn't be seeing it anytime soon anyway. That's the only place they will be showing it on screen. It is going straight to DVD and won't be available until the summer anyway.

No, Fred has a point. Those Trek fans in the uniforms are no different than people walking around with jerseys on.

Well, that's a little bit different too Vex.

A lot of people have, and where Jerseys. I my self have plenty of Packer Jersys... (Green Bay fan living in Minnesota)

I go to a few games a year, and watch what I can. In the off season, I catch what Packer news I can. Does that mean I'm a fanatic?

No.

I have like one toy phaser from when I was five and they sold them at walmart. I have a collection of starships when they were made by micro machines. (They rule, I still play with them) I watch Star Trek at least once a week, just like sports. During the summer, I try to keep in check with whats up for next season.

Am I a fanatic?

No.

I think it is difficult to describe what a casual fan is, and what an obsessed fan is, in any sport. And I hardly find it worth talking about. It's not our place, or any ones to say what is normal, and what is fanatic.

The people that go to work in uniform, or paint their chest the color of their team don't have a problem with it, why should we?

I dont even see why people are so concerned with the sad belief that "Extreme Trekkies" ruin all of our image. If you want the every day Trek fan to be seen as a guy who works all day, and then watches Enterprise one day a week, and doesnt even think about it untill next week, then your afraid to be a trek fan, plain and simple.

Stop worring about what other people think.

Folks,

I think we're taking this a little tooseriously. If one guy wants to call an indivudal wearing a Trek uniform to a Federal Court a fanatic, so be it. If you, on the other hand, don't want to, that's cool too.

I take a third position on this topic. Trekkies wearing Star Trek uniforms into Federal Courts really are out of their mind, wheras guys painting their chests at football game...they just love their team. :)

Well its really a matter of whats appropriate...taking your shirt off and painting it with the logo of your football team and going into Federal court isnt appropriate either :)

Then again some folks wear jerseys every day ::shrug:: The only difference is wearing a sports uniform is considered cool and wearing a Star Trek uniform is considered nerdy.

Hmm... Trekkie v/s Treker,

which is what?

I watch TNG, VOY,DS9, Enterprise, I read every new book that

comes out, I see the movies, but have never been to a convention, and i collect Trek stuff.

What does that make me, Fan , Fanatic, or in between :)

Actually, my Peer Advisor did something similar last year...she was going to a football game with her guy friends, and they were short a letter, so she donned a sports bra and painted a big Z on her stomach (least I think it was the Z)

Hey Fred, while I can respect your views I think you're just a little too worked up about it. I loved trekkies, it was an interesting and fun documentry, I hope I see myself in Trekkies 2 :j

I think it shows a bunch of people who aren't afraid to wander around on a daily basis being different, they enjoy what they're doing, they're not hurting anyone, they take the title of trek geek and wear it like a badge of honor.

As for galaxy quest..I think it was a great movie, but not a tribute. ^.^

Obviously Paramount doesn't think Trekkies has gone to far....

As for my own two cents...

Yeah there are some out there that take it a LITTLE too far...but hey thats them..They are enjoying themselves and thats what matters. Really, I mean so some Trekkies dress up like Bolians and pain themselves Blue...Big Deal...There are some people (this guy is for real he had his name legally changed to cat) who have whiskers implanted in their face and pay thousands of dollars to have thier lips cleffed (cliffed?) and his ear pointed so that they look like a Cat...

Honstly,

Trekkies 1 was a good laugh. And If you think they are just making fun of Trek fans..there is a really simple solution...don't watch the movie...

Well, of course they are ... it's called satire.

Somewhere else on these boards is a discussion on whether someone should be making a video spoofing Martha Stewart and everyone's saying, "Go for it!"

Should all the homemakers and multi-millionaire entrepeneurs get upset? Sure, let them cry all the way to the bank.

I rarely watch sports on T.V., so the only reason I know about the chest painting custom is from seeing it spoofed on TV commercials. And those make these people seem pretty stupid too.

Lighten up and laugh everyone. : )

ROFL!! - I was just reminded of that scene in one of the Austin Powers movies when those guys were at the "TITANS" football game and the A and N were coming back from the hot dog stand. :)

Hey there,

Worked up about it? LOL. This isn't something that fills my head every day. Simply someone asked an opinion about it and I gave it. I didn't find it enjoyable, I found it insulting and demeaning. What perhaps annoyed me the most was that, as I recall, that film was billed as "A Tribute To Star Trek Fans." ::shrug:: :)
