Trek game I'm working on...

236 posts in this topic

I am so hooked on this game, it isn't even funny. LOL.

Ever thought of talking to Paramount about getting the finished version on the ST.com website under the Games section? I don't know if they still do or not, but at one time they had several Macromedia games that you could play for free. (Checkers and some "avoid the Romulan ships" game. Heh heh.)

If it will make you feel any better, this game blows both the Checkers one and the Romulan ship one out of the water!

Now...

I have hailed passing ships who say "we'll take the shipment for you," etc., but when I try to beam it to their ship, it says I must be stopped to beam something.

So I stop moving, and then hit "Beam." A redshirt goes flying out of the ship. :) Am I not doing something right?

I dont know why the cargo transfer feature isnt working anymore. It must have been messed up when I did some bug fixes last time. I'll look into it.

To show just how much time I've wasted on this game, I got a Steamrunner :-)

This game is great! The best improvement suggestion I've seen so far is for a keymap, at least for shields, phasers, torpedoes; if it's hard to get ctrl/alt keys to work, maybe use a set of keys close to each other on the keyboard?

Incidentally, I encountered one system (Di) that should have changed affiliation, but didn't in the map. It has a Federation starbase.

Wow, the war must be going very badly if we have to use steam-powered vehicles in an age of warp drive.

Di was a bug. It has now been fixed, but if you've liberated it already you will have to re-liberate it.

Incidentally, I've also fixed the cargo transfer bug and removed a particular feature. When you upgrade to a new ship, you will no longer be deducted the prestige amount for that ship.

Folks were beating the game with only 200K in prestige and that's not right :-D

Oh...and the updates will not affect your saved game.

BTW, was this game in any way inspired by Netrek? It's a multiplayer 2D Star Trek combat game I used to play like 3-4 years ago; it died out (not enough players), but seems to be making a resurgence. Of course, it's possible both ideas were entirely independent, but I'm just curious.

It was inspired by NetTrek...a Macintosh network game that I used to play :)

Of course they could be the same thing...but from what I knew NetTrek was only for the Macintosh. This was 15 odd years ago so I dont really remember exactly. This other netrek.org does look pretty similar to the Mac NetTrek...maybe its the same thing. Dunno

Good catch though.

I don't think that's possible. (He says after having spent an hour knocking out ship after ship) :-)

Not the same thing, but both programs had the same idea. NetTrek was only for Mac, Netrek was (is) for Unix systems. According to the Netrek FAQ, it's unclear which was developed first. Naturally, they consider the Unix one to be more sophisticated.

Loami you can't liberate Di now and finish the game?

No, it never re-liberates.

Also, there's another bug you might want to know about: occasionally, a ship pops up that can't be targetted. These ships are perfectly capable of firing at you.

Correction: the starbase there disappeared and it can re=liberate. The game doesn't end though.

Hey there,

Known bugs I found are....

1) When upgrading thru the different ships, Akira and higher save your points. Aka: You buy an Akira, still have 200,000 and need only another 100,000 for the next. However, for everything below Akira, it reverts to zero. Aka: You buy a Steamrunner, you now have 0.

2) As mentioned, at the end, game never seems to end. I attacked the system with the massive fleet in it, wipped them out...only to have a message realerting me to a massive Dominion fleet.

3) During the massive fleet attack, there are a large number of ships I can't target. Seems to happen when there are a large number coming at you all at once. They can target you, but you can't fire at them.

And when I finished, given the above error, I only had 280,000. But if you add in what I lost on my way there due to ship upgrades, a bit higher. :)

A nice game Vex.

OK, I got up to the Steamrunner last night, and the ability to rapid-fire up to 100 torpedos (if one were so inclined) is... well, it's FUN! :)

The game will not 'end'. But the end is when you liberate all the sectors, get the secret ship, and can just keep playing blowing away bad guys to your hearts content.

Loami...you liberated the systems and it told you there was a large fleet massing in that one sector...you didnt get the special ship?

Nope. It didn't tell me anything about a large fleet massing in any sector either.

I have no idea what could have happened to your game Loami. Are you sure every sector is liberated?
