Seiben

Now the "real" fun begins

Sparks shower down, and klaxons blare in Engineering as Seiben frantically orders his teams around the ship to repair damage sustained to the Arcadia in the battle against the Squids. The good news, is that the Arcadia managed to destory the Squid ship, but unfortunately, the Arcadia came out of the battle crippled and limping.

The scene in engineering was chaotic as engineers scurried around from system to system. Seiben was working on restoring propulsion for the second time. According to Betty, the helm officer, ship controls were sluggish again. It was just one of many items on a long, and ever growing list of items requiring his attentions.

Damage reports still coming from the bridge, as he speaks. With Trichon, who Seiben considered his right hand man, and probably twice the engineer Seiben is, on board the Talon, who is trying to rescue Commander Dacotah, and Commander Jaruq filling in as XO in her absence, Seiben was at an unfair advantage. Throughout his 11 month tenure on the Arcadia, Seiben relied on their expertise and guidance for situations just like this. Now however, they were gone forcing Seiben to think for himself and deal with all of this.

The situation was grim, as Seiben surveyed engineering. It was in a sorry state, just like the rest of the ship. But Jaruq chose Seiben to suceed him as the Chief for the reason, and he was definately not about to let him, or the Arcadia down. "Get the EPS repaired, that's first priority, without it, we're pretty much dead in the water" he ordered.

"Aye aye sir" they obediantly said. If asked a year ago, if Seiben could handle the role as Chief Engineer, or any leadership role for that matter Seiben probably would have laughed nervously, and repond "No way". Throughout his childhood life, Seiben never really had the oppurtunity to gain anyone's trust for any responsibilities. His family moving around prevented that. He was a shy kid who always kept to himself, and he found that to be a disadvantage when he joined Starfleet. But, as time passed on the Arcadia, Seiben became more self-confident. Especially after his stay on P'Jem.

Time passes, but Seiben and his team is nowhere close to finished. But they do manage to restore impulse, and complete 30% of repairs for the EPS. He looks at a status display monitor, and sees shields have increased to 55%. Not much, but every bit does help. They're progressing along nicely. There's no rest for the weary though. Well aware that he and his engineers are exhausted, Seiben still orders them around. But he thoughtfully replicates coffee and donuts for them in the newly complete lounge. Taking a breather himself in the lounge, Seiben asks the status of the repairs.

The officer estimates that about 25% of the repairs have been completed, mostly to the EPS, Shields, Propulsion and the SIFs. He estimates all repairs should be complete in about 24 hours. Seiben thanks the officer who scurries back to his post. Seiben takes a long sip of his Columbian coffee, the caffiene giving him a much needed most of energy. He wolfs down a glazed donut before returning to the bedlam that is engineering.

With the caffiene and sugar coursing in his bloodstream, Seiben continues his repairs. Jaruq probably would have disapproved of coffee and donuts in engineering, but with their current situation, it appears that nobody will be getting any sleep anytime soon. Caffiene and sugar their only energy source. Officers now and then, would enter the lounge for a rest, a cofee and a donut or two. He hopes that'll keep them happy and motivated.

Time continues to fly as the engineers blaze through the repair list. No more damage reports were coming in, so that was good. But the intrepid engineers never relent. They continue working long and hard with goals of completing repairs. Slowly, but surely.. the goal is being realised. Systems through out the Arcadia are once again coming back on line. The crew performing as one, like a machine. Seiben sits at a console, and looks at his engineers. When this is over, Seiben will commend them all. Though most are fresh out of Academy, all performed above and beyond their duties.

Seiben hopes he's being a good Chief. This definately wasn't what Seiben expected as his first assignment as Interim Chief Engineer. He doesn't know how Jaruq would have dealt with this, but Seiben does hope he's living up to his expectations, and trust.

That log was a great read. I watched the 10404.01 sim with the squids, it was fun to see.
