I heard that persons posted on a ship have a place to post logs. I thought that since I'm "posted" at the Acadamy that I would have a place to write about my character's first Acadamy experience. I suggest that a forum be created just for Acadamy members to write thier logs.

I applaud your efforts in trying to get started. Just a quick word of warning, because I've seen others get frustrated with this very thing as well. Just one tiny thing before you get too far into developing a character for an advanced sim. You may have to make some small modifications depending upon where you end up posting. Each ship has it's own set of rules on character creation, and types of characters that can be played. And on many ships, your character has to be approved by the host team before they will post you to the sim.

Where one ship may allow you to be a Cardassian, there are others that will not, based on timeframe of the sim, or location. Some ships will allow only "Trek" ally species, and others will allow just about anything you can make up...within reason of course. One example I can think of, is that the RES Talon, requires all players to be Rihannsu (Romulan), as they are a very xenophobic race, and do not trust other species. As for being within reason, I actually had someone, three weeks after getting posted, suddenly develop death rays from the eyes when he became angry. For obvious reasons, this was not allowed.

But don't let this deter you. Go ahead, practice working on some logs, and post if you like, we'll look at them. It's a great way to learn to interact with others on your ships. Just remember some of the cardinal rules to log writing:

Never jump too far past where the plot left off, if in question, run the log by your GM team before posting. (advanced sims)

Never use another player's character or npc without their permission, or having had them read over it first.

And never, speak for another player again, without clearing it with the other player. (I made this mistake myself my very first log attempt myself..it was...a learning experience to be sure.)

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing you in the Academy.

And sneaky...

I think I can sum up what you are trying to get across in one word....she is EVIL  as in the noun...

Who do you think I take my Evil lessons from? ^_^

Anyway....back to topic. I think The Blu one summed it up very well. Cadet Logs would be interesting, but as the Blu one has said, ba careful not create to much of your character--for the obvious reasons that she mentioned and also you want to have something to write about when you do graduate

Oh yeah..."EVIL.....is GOOD"

Why the heck not? If a cadet wants to practice log-writting, more power to them. Just remember that it is practice, not character development.

Take it from a cadet..practice is well and good...but if you practice Incorrectly, you are instilling bad simming practices..and those will eventually be harder to overcome.

Realize, of course, I dont know what the HE-double hockey sticks Im talking about.

*cough*Hood*cough*

I think you've got a great idea, William. If you'd like to write logs, the best place to post them would be the STSF Academy folder. Perhaps, if there's enough log-writing from the cadets, a separate forum will be created.

Rather than writing character development logs, just focus on logs about your Academy sessions. Summarize the mission that took place, offer thoughts on what took place from your character's perspective (moreso the position you played than the type of person you played), discuss what strategies you would have used (or did use) to solve the problems presented in the sim, and discuss what you might be able to do to improve your performance in the future. Straightforward logs like this are very useful even in the advanced sims, and they don't require too much character involvement.

I hope to see some logs. I enjoy reading them.

Logs are great. I'd love to read cadet logs.

I dont know about developing any specific character...players in academies in general don't have characters, and everyone assumes you are a standard human, for ease of new players who are just trying to understand 'how' to play, rather than the specifics of a long-term detailed environment.

After all, most character development is reserved for non-plot-related activity, and just about everyone should be involved in the plot for an academy sim.

For example I play a unique character on my advanced sim, a floating dolphin, but when I play the academy I play as a standard human.

But I think writing logs is a great idea. There's just no room to develop a character in an academy sim.

PS: I voted yes.

I don't know about that. If you read my character bio (I AM the Featured Player after all  ) you'll see that I've been able to "flesh out" my character quite nicely based on what happens in-sim.

Also.. if you REALLY do want to write a log or two, please feel free to make use of these forums.

A character log would definately be appropriate for the STSF Academy folder.

Was that a veiled suggestion  ..or what ^_^

Well, perhaps it wasn't veiled at all...

Really...I have been a Vulcan since ..well ..as long as I can remember...I drop context clues during the sim..such as "fascinating", eye-brow raises, a calm manner at all times..(like when your Captain is trying to kill you). I guess I dont HAVE to be Vulcan...it just helps ground me and give a reference point as to how my character should respond...

Once I am more familiar with simming, I will probably morph into a Romulan, or something Nasty  to vent all that repressed emotion...

But this will probably be an additioanl persona...who knows....yet.

Indeed! But just because you're in the sim doesn't mean you're doing anything related to the plot.

I agree that character development can happen at any time. But as a general rule, when you're simming in-sim in an academy, the focus is driving the plot and showing that you know how to sim, not taking time out for personal development.

Is all I'm saying

While I don't necessarily like the idea of a whole new forum being started for cadet logs, there could certainly be a thread designed for optional cadet writing. This could be pinned to the top of "STSF Academy" forum. Thoughts?

I think is a great idea.

I am going to write a log about last night's "interesting" events with the plasma steam caused hull breaches.
