dispute hearings

I'm kinda curious has their ever been a dispute hearing in stsf???? it's plain and simple???

There has not been a need for one yet thankfully.

If there is a problem on a SIM...  the golden rule regarding it should be "the GM should be the first and last person to know about any problem."  Meaning if you have a problem...  your GM will be the best person more than likely to help you solve a problem.  Typically no problem needs to go higher than them.

But if for some reason your complaint involves the GM, or you do not feel the GM handled the situation correctly..  you can request it be taken higher.  That is where the hearing would come in.  But again...  no...  no hearings have had to be held so far.

Hope that helps.  :o

Yep!  Cool.  :o

STSF is just being prepared.  We understand there is always the possibility of a problem, so we try to anticipate it and plan the best way to handle it.

Maybe we should have a dispute hearing practice run. Randy, I'll pretend I don't like you and you complain that I'm a disruption and a pest.

A disruption and a pest, Vex?  YOU!?  :::chuckles:::    :o    :D

As far as why you are not able to play...  I'm not sure.  Have you by any chance tried accessing the rooms from any other computer?

Sure, Randy. Let me check it using my Pentium 4 PC, maybe the one with the flatscreen...or the screen projection computer I have in my bathroom.

Or I can try it using the mini-computer I have installed in my Ferrari with the wireless connection.

I only have 1 computer. ::thwap::

Do you have any friends that you could sneak onto their computer to check?  :)

I'm not saying ya have to have several computers.  Maybe even check from the public library...  most of them have internet access there nowadays.  hehe

As far as I have been told the MAJORITY of people can now accesss the rooms again.  I only know of about 3 out of over 70 people who are not able to.  So somewhere I'm leaning towards it being a problem with those individual machines somewhere.

But the Ferrari with the wireless internet connection sounds pretty cool.    :o    :D

Funny you should mention this.

I work for Bosch, the German auto parts manufacturer, as an accountant/buyer for our US-based research division.  One of the research topics we are investigating is bringing wireless internet to the car.

The technology exists to do it via onboard computers and cell phones with bluetooth, (The cell phone is used as a dial-up modem.) but it is too expensive and the connection speed is too slow to be of any practical value.  A company by the name of Ricochet was developing a nation-wide wireless internet network, but they recently filed Chapter 11 and had no other competitors to speak of.  A national wireless network is not a small or cheap undertaking (lots of capital equipment) and no real product until it's done, and the company didn't have enough sales to continue the work.

The theory behind wireless internet connections while on the highways is sound, but not commercially viable until there is a national wireless network and connection speeds can be improved.  I should be an Admiral by then.

It's even funnier that you mention Richochet...  lol.  The company that I work with (Jarvis Entertainment) was actually considering buying them earlier.  I've actually seen some of the communication regarding it.  Thankfully the deal did not go through or else it really could have hurt JEG.

But one thing that's really interesting....  JEG *IS* making an effort to enter the wireless internet business.  They've already aquired a company in Texas that is pretty big down there.  And they're looking to expand.  So who knows.  :o :D

It's something I see as having a lot of potential.  Eventually being able to develop "smart cars" that can tell when certain problems arise and notify the shop.  Or being able to do "remote diagnostics" to correct some issues.  The possibilities are endless.

But again...  it's something that's going to take a TON of money and a group with a LOT of capital financing.

Actually Vex, at first my problem was MS Virtual Machiene fighting with Sun Java. I had to go into the internet properties and adjust it for the ST.com rooms. I was using Sun, but M$ was trying to take over. Sadly I had to let it to get in to the Holodeck. ::Prefers Sun JRE over MSVM.::

Then... for some unknown reason it stopped working. Or just kept logging me in on one of my playnames never logging me out to change names. That problem turned out to be my firewall. I had to set permissions to allow startrek.com, paramount.com, and peoplelink.com access.

That seemed to work. I've rarely had problems since. ::shrugs::

For me, it was just magic.  One week I couldn't get into the room, the next I could.  I never had a problem at all when I had an old dial up modem, but when I got cable access, it must have been too fast for the room.  Last week, it all got better.  It's enough to make a Vulcan shrug!  ::shrugs::

Internet in the car. Now there's a good idea.

We've got folks driving around not paying attention to their driving, yacking on their cell phones, watching LCD TVs, and now you want to give them the internet so they can check email and download porn.

This is a disasterous technology waiting to happen, LOL. Just make sure none of these guys are on the road when I am!

Hmm!  Porn while driving!  Why didn't I think of that?

Actually, there is a lot more to the Internet than simply web sites.  That is just the latest application.

And our division was also working on "smart cars" for a while as well.  Our concern was developing applications for enhancing driver safety by allowing the onboard computer to take control of the car in the event the driver couldn't.

A car that can take control, Vanroy? ::laughs:: What if they form an alliance against the people! Then the computer can lock your doors, and run into the ocean (before ejecting the computer mainframe from the car).

Curious, Vanroy.... are you trying to control the word. :o

::laughs some more:: hahaha, I make my self crack up over here. I am just so, ::studders:: so, so...... funny.

That would assume the computer was intellegent and had "life".  These computers would not fit that description.  They would be set to engage a set of protocals when certain events happen.  Such as when it detects a massive amount of swerving, or whatever.  It could connect to the net, find the safest place to pull off, and pull over.

Imagine.... a way to help stop drunk drivers...  a way to save someone if they fell asleep at the wheel, or whatever.  It could also be used while you're traveling to tell you where the nearest gas station is while you're on the road...  have it check your gas tank and say you need to fill up before you reach XXX if you do not wish to run out of fuel.  Or have the car warn you about certain important service bulletins from the dealer...  some kind of popup saying that there was a recall on your vehicle's tires, etc.

There are TONS of related applications.  All things that can go to enhance the safety and reliability of our vehicles.

I think the truth will be somewhere between what HyperDrive and Webmaster suggest.  Nothing that could take over the world, or drive you home when you're drunk, but maybe something that could help a driver get out of a spin or will sound a warning if the driver is drifting or something like that.

Actually I was in geek mode one night a while ago and watching TechTV where they were doing a show on future tech in cars. That was one thing that is in development they showed.

The car had a sensor that watched and recorded the drivers eye movements and sounded a loud alarm when the drivers eye movements indicated they were beginning to get drowsy at the wheel. So they could pull over and rest before continuing on.

Though the next problem would be getting people to pull over. I'd imagine the alarm would be annoying if you couldn't shut it off. That could work ::shrugs::

Either way...  if it's annoying, ya would not be able to sleep.  You would be too ticked off, screaming at the car to shut up.  Regardless...  lol.  Problem solved.  :o

Hmm!  Porn while driving!  Why didn't I think of that?

lol, new technology where a tissue would pop out and cover the steering wheel to protect it from any potential spills, (coffee, protein stains, cappicino, ect...) but about sleeping at the wheel, would it be like a clock alarm? because I always have problems with those, even though I'm totally asleep and can't see anything, I always manage to hit the snooze or sumthing like throw it across the room when i can't find the snooze, would it be like that? or would the car be yelling at you like a sarg in bootcamp? and that would be cool, if your too drunk to drive, the car takes over, that way, you can poke your head out the window to releif your stomach so you don't choke on it, jk... but anyways, the car I think is cool is the new fuel cell car being made by Honda or Ford or something, the Hy-Wire, they say it will be in mass production and retail in a couple years, only a year till i get my license, wo0t
