Brian Graham

First Contact

Brian Graham walked down the corridor, mentally singing "Juke Box Hero." Farther along the corridor, a turbolift door opened and out walked Semek…

Semek holding a padd slowly makes a progression down the corridor while being bumped into by Lt. Graham who had not been watching where he was going

"Whoops, sorry Semek, wasn't really paying attention. Are you alright?"

"Excuse me Lt" Semek says calmly, though a little bit of annoyance is felt through his Vulcan calm.

Wanting to get past the accident as well, Brian quickly changed the subject. "My fault. What are you reading?" Brian asked.

Semek looked over at the curious lieutenant. "I am studying the mating rituals of Bolia, in preparation of a future conference." makes a motion to begin leaving.

"Mating rituals? What kind of conference are you going too heh heh?” Brian jokingly asked while simultaneously elbowing Semek in the arm, attempting to enforce the humor.

Semek quirks his brow, "Hmmmm yes, one of your bizarre human gestures, I had thought it disappeared. I suppose I thought wrong."

"A Vulcan admitting a mistake? Let me document that, this will keep Federation scientists busy for years."

"Not admitting an error would be illogical and dishonest" Semek quirks brow "As a Vulcan I do not lie."

"Yeah I guess your right. You know I was just busting your chops though right?" Brian asked, hoping he did not offend the Vulcan. That is, if unless taking offense was an emotion, in which case he had not. Brian shook his head, realizing he was analyzing this conversation too much.

"Busting my chops? A crude metaphor" Semek attempts to exit the situation again.

Brian noticed that Semek was being quite obvious that he wanted to be on his way. "Bloody Semek, are you in a hurry or something?"

"I am not in a hurry, though I would like to continue my studies" Semek said noticing the Lt's emotional response.

Having never associated much with Vulcans in a non-formal setting, Brian decided to take the opportunity now. "Bah, you can study anytime. How about roaming the ship?"

"I am well versed in the layout of the Excalibur, and I have no need to roam it" Semek said still attempting to create an exit for himself.

"I don't mean for research Semek," relied Brian, suddenly realizing why some found it difficult to converse with Vulcans, "I mean for recreation. You can't meet people with your eyes on a PADD."

"I find research my similar activity to your human recreation" Semek replied, putting up more emotional barriers "I have no need to socialize at this moment Lt."

Hoping that scientific research might sway the pillar of Vulcan neutrality, Brian made another attempt. "Nonsense Semek, even Vulcans need association. Actually, some research has shown that people work better together know more about their coworkers, so you should try to associate with the crew. What do you think one of the reasons I'm even walking around the ship is?"

Considers answering the last question but decides against it. "I do not require to socialize at this time Lt.. Graham. Now good day" Semek walks away from Graham after noticing a small opening in advantage.

Brian watched the Vulcan leave, already engrossed in the PADD again. "All right, see you around" Brian called after him. Continuing down the corridor, Brian considered how this "First Contact" went, pleased that it wasn't an actual mission. He wondered if the Academy had ever considered adding a class for cadets, entitled "Vulcan Communication Dynamics 101". If they ever did Brian seriously considered taking it.
