I was just wondering how many of you really believe in aliens. Not little green men specifically...but just alien lifeforms in general.

I believe there are probably sentient beings in the universe...but I dont believe any of them have visited Earth and I doubt we'll ever meet any. I think the Earth will be blasted into bits by a giant asteroid before we ever manage to find aliens (by communicating or otherwise).

I do think we'll find other signs of life on other planets though in our own system. Possibly just microbes or bacteria.

Well I chose "Xiang has been drinking too much vodka" because it is the only option we know to be true. :)

I think before we go looking for signs of intelligent life in outter space we should try to find some on Earth!

I'd have to agree with you there, dumbass. I still think he's a little stoned.

Hmm...I've never done marajana or any drug for that matter. I'm firmly against it in fact.

Now alcohol on the other hand :)

Whether you're a creationist, an evolutionist or any otherist, I think you would have to agree that the human species is quite unique. Supporting some sort of life is one thing, but supporting intelligent life is altogehter different. The fact that one planet can support intelligent life is nothing short of miraculous, regardless whether or not you consider yourself a "religious" individual. If the universe is as big as we think it is, it is possible that other life may exist out there, but as far as anything we'd consider "intelligent," I wouldn't hold your breath for too long (the result being you turn into a little blue man). :)

Well heck, that's not saying much. I mean the Ford Pinto was unique, and for very good reasons. :)

Well out of millions of species of creatures on the earth, 1 of them is as intelligent (us).

Personally I attribute the success of the human species to two factors: dexterity and language.

We have the physical ability to manipulate our surroundings far greater than any other animal...and we have the ability to communicate on very complex levels.

We can teach primates sign language with pretty well developed syntax. And the only reason they can't speak verbally is because they're not equipped biologically to do so...though they can utter some basic words such as "mum" or "cup", and fully associate the word not only with an object but as a preposition.

Looking at all the variety of life on Earth...it is inconceivable to me that, should life exist elsewhere, it would not have the capacity to develop similar manual dexterity or language capacity.

On a personal level...I certainly hope that humans are not the only "sentient" species in the universe. I don't want to get into a religious discussion...but if we're the only ones here...we won't be around forever (by our own doing or a cosmic event...an asteroid or our sun aging). So if we're it...it'll be a huge waste.

Speaking of which...I dont want to go out without someone else in the universe knowing I was here.

So I'm going to send a picture of myself into outer space to drift forever. If anyone wants to help me build my launch rocket, let me know.

OXYMORON!!!!

Alchohol is consitered a drug, except by those who don't, and they only say it to justify drinking.

Secondly, I chose that it wont happen in our life time...just because we're not interesting yet. The only aliens, are those that we'll deal with us, when we're flying in space, and those that'll take us over, when were underdeveloped.

I'd prefer, to wait a hundred years, and meet them inspace, rather then meet them at my door with a ray gun.

Let me tell you what one of my college professors (now the chair of her department) said about alcohol. It is easy to see how she became so popular with her students.

It is a known fact that alcohol kills brain cells. No scientific or medical body has ever disputed this. The rules of biology and survival-of-the-fittest being what they are, however, it will naturally kill off the weaker brain cells first. Again, no scientific or medical body disputes this.

However, this not only means that the average brain cell strength increases, since the weaker cells are no longer part of the equation, but the brain as a whole is stronger and more robust. The weaker (now dead) brain cells probably were not contributing very much to the overall brain function but may have actually been holding the other cells back.

So if those mid-terms in college are getting you down, don't fret. Have a beer!

Heck, there were several times when the professors picked up the bar tab! I'm actually not joking about this.

I voted the last one... because it said "Aliens?" :-)

I may have posted something similar before as an answer to a similar poll, but, I have no idea if aliens exist. And, as far as I know, all the estimates that are given as to how common it should be are based on baseless assumptions about probabilities. Like others here, I would suspect that simpler life is much more common than intelligent life. I would also think that life does not necessarily have to have evolved in the same way it did on Earth. If we find life elsewhere, it may not be so easy to recognize (incidentally, this is my major criticism of SETI's methodology).

Yeah, welcome! :)

Anyways, back on topic, I do believe there's life out there.. and perhaps we'll get a chance to meet them. Or, maybe they're already visiting.. type in UFO in Google, and you'll yield lots of results of alien encounters. Whether they're true or not, I am uncertain, but you never know. As I recall someone saying on TV once: "It'd be a real waste of space if we were the only ones out there".. (or something like that) :P Just my 2 cents Canadian.

I find saying we can be the only intelligent race in the universe to be rather arrogant.

From a religious standpoint, if a universal force could create this world and man on it, this entity certainly has the ability to do so elsewhere. And why not?

From an evolutionary standpoint, the fact that life has evolved here on THIS planet, adapting to unbelievable conditions, suggests that life could similarly evolve and adapt to other extreme conditions on some other rock.

Man is impressive indeed, but to assume we're the cat's rear end of the universe from either a theological or evolutionary perspective... Nah. I'm not as arrogant as my cat. Usually. Sometimes. Occastionally.

You know whats really fun to do? When your cat has been cleaning the same spot of fur for like an hour and finally gets it just right and is done, touch him there so he has to start all over again. :)

Once again, before we jump off topic......

I personally believe that there are sentient aliens out there, and I for one do believe that at one point or another they have visited Earth. For all we know we could be one of there science expirements :)

Scary thought. But whos know when they would finally decide to make contact with us, it might be in our time or our childrens childrens time. Ya just never know.

If we are the only ones out of billions of star systems, then I sure do pity the Universe, cause we'd be a perfectly good waste of space. Guess we'll have to wait and see....

If we are just one little blip in time and space, do you think the universe really needs our pity? :)
