What is the goal of Enterprise?

Is Enterprise for the die-hard fans or to broaden the "treckie" base?   12 members have voted

  1. 1. Is Enterprise for the die-hard fans or to broaden the "treckie" base?

    • Enterprise is here for the diehard fans. It is not really designed for a mass audience.

    • Enterprise is here to expand the audience base. It is not really for the diehard fans.

OK, I have seen some people on this and other Star Trek boards say that Enterprise is written to appeal to the die-hard Trekkies and was never intended to connect with a mass audience. I have also seen people say just the opposite, that the show's function is to expand the fan base first (possibly by "dumbing" the series down) and what the diehard fans say is not as big a priority.

This is similar to GromVic's topic, but mine is better because it has a poll. :)

I think it's made for everyone not just diehard or the rest

I think its a little of both. It appeals to the masses which hard core fans hate (because this usually involves tight clothes and sex). And it appeals to the hard core fans but the masses dont like it because they dont get all the references and feel lost.

If you're going to bring in the topic of tight clothes and sex appeal to please the "general masses" of audience, then every Star Trek series did this.

I'm going to say that Enterprise is more for the general mass, and not for the diehard trek fans. Main reason? It doesn't always follow canon, which diehard fans tend to dislike.

Have you seen t'Pol....yeah i wonder who this series is trying to appeal too? (Although in all fairness every Series had some 'hot chick' and have you seen the outffits the women wore in TOS?)

In fact I think the BB twins have said that this is a series that is supposed to appeal to everyone.

Hey there,

Sorry to say I think there should be a third option, both. That's my view of it anyway. :)

Probably a little bit of both. For diehard fans, despite all the inconsistencies, Enterprise offers a glimpse of how the Federation and space exploration started, but it also offers action and cool special effects, without most of the complicated Trek terminology, so they won't get confused. (As Vex mentioned). But of course, the real goal is to get good ratings, and keep the Star Trek franchise afloat.

Of the two though, I chose "to expand audience basses". We're here complaining about all the inconsistencies about Enterprise, when the ordinary viewer, doesn't know enough about Star Trek to actually notice. But nonetheless, Enterprise's ratings have been growing.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that the episodes are improving?

(because this usually involves tight clothes and sex).

Why do you think I've been watching since day one...not just during these more improved episodes?

Yeah, is there any reason Star Trek CAN'T be about sex?

I mean, think of the poor stereotypical mid 30s-40s hardcore fans out there who still live in their parent's basement - and don't say they don't exist because the stereotype got started somehow. One guy I went to college with said he was building a holodeck in his basement - and he was SERIOUS about it!

Where else are people who live and breathe Star Trek far beyond the point of anyone on this board supposed to get their excitement?
