Personal log

Nature

It has been approximately 8 months since the time jump that brought the Manticore 5000 years to the future. 1 month he spent building and perfecting the Centrifugal fractioner and a bit of farming, another month he spent repairing the ship and disinterring Ensign Lokrah from her own desires, and now 6 more months doing all the above and more.

The creation of deuterium is proceeding slowly at the original rate and now even slower due to the demand for creature comfort on the planet surface. From the time Tovan’s shuttle have reached on earth soil again to now the efficiency of the device has only increased by roughly 2.3% per month. It is still a slow process to produce the fuel but the ship’s tanks are 1 tenth filled, this is a good sign. It gives motivation for the engineering and science personnel and faith for the others, the hopes for that day when we are back where we belong is strong within the minds of the crew.

Tovan has been near technology for all his life. But on the planet he only possesses the device and generators. During these months on the planet nature gave Tovan inspiration and something to do. Every day since he got back he has been working the fields, checking every patch for their progress. Tovan’s Padd is filled with growing progress of Tomatoes, potatoes and spice plants the crew has seeded and a lot of other crops.

To Tovan, nature had really literary no meaning, it was true that he had learned botany and biology but he had no experience with plants. Tovan is an educated fool when it comes to herbology. But now he studies every day and night about plants, he even keeps a medium sized pot filled with spice plants that originates from several worlds. Vulcan, Bolian, Earth, Tovan had a few seeds of each of them. There are exquisite in taste and aroma, it should be served accordingly.

Several weeks ago Tovan discovered that the dirt from the bottom of a river is rich in nutrients. Upon that discovery Tovan used his shovel and brought several pounds of the fertile wet earth back to the camp, he placed the dirt on every one of the patches and in his own plant pots. Indeed the soil was rich and the plants grew strong. During that time his plants has already developed a very weak faint spicy smell. It could have been the dilweed, which Tovan planted first.

In these months Tovan meditated by the rivers every night, it made him at peace with him self, the conflict gone from his mind and the memories of his brother’s funeral was no longer a nightmare.

Tovan Often wondered why this planet had become so lifeless until the crew’s landing. When he looked in to the waters of a silent stream he saw just that, a silent stream. There was no fish, no crustaceans, and not even a tadpole. This small detail left Tovan speechless. During his time in starfleet academy Biology classes he was taught many things about life forms in the waters. It fascinated him of course however he never gotten the chance to see one up close. But now he is in direct contact with the natural surrounds and he still cannot observe a fish, or a crab or a tadpole, it left Tovan frustrated. The thought of marine life fleeing away from him crossed his mind every time he sees water. The disappearance of the planet’s marine life, or in this case any life at all was still a mystery, one mystery that no one could solve, one mystery that left Tovan speechless and frustrated.

From the start of Tovan’s beginning he has never been this close to nature until now. The memory of this experience will always be with him for as long as he lives.

Tovan stands looking across the small river in the morning light, it is winter but temperate, a new day, a new beginning awaits…

End
