Star Trek Voyager: Season 1

Well, it came out today. The moment you've either been dreading, looking forward to, or could have cared less about. Star Trek Voyager, Season 1 came out on DVD.

And lemme tell you, it's an orange DVD. Not just any orange, it's neon orange. You can't miss it when you're walking through the stores, unless your blind that is.

Ok, so, I admit it, I bought it. The only DVD I've ever purchased in my life. The only set of DVDs I ever plan on purchasing. Voyager is my favorite of the series. My first episode of Star Trek was Unimatrix Zero, Part II. To this day, I've never seen Part I of that episode. Voyager has been my Star Trek and it's the one I love.

So, I never managed to see any of Season 1. I saw the ending of Voyager, Endgame, before I saw the beginning, Caretaker. How odd is that? I had no clue that Janeway had ever had a 'bun' untill I went to Australia and saw an episode there from Season 1. To this day, I've only seen a few episodes in Season 1, maybe 4 of them total.

The DVD case is neon orange, and see through. The discs are bright silver with the title of the series on them, along with the names of the episodes in a small circle around the center. This is dissapointing since it's hard to tell what's on what discs at a glance, but you can tell if you want. The casing is plastic, not cardboard like the DS9 ones were, very dissapointing there. The orange holders for the DVD's are held together by a plastic two-part case that slips over it. It looks very modern and very classy (except for the orange). On teh front and back there are two large circles, the front showing a picture of the ship along with the series title, the back showing a list of the episodes on what discs.

I stuck a disc in, and I must say, the menu has blown me away. Neither TOS, TNG, or DS9 menu's can compare to these menu's. They are computer animated with teh ship. Easy to navigate, and have some of the greatest shots of Voyager I've ever seen before.

I saw a few minutes of Caretaker and the video quality is about the same as TNG or DS9. I didn't see any major improvments in that.

I put in teh special features section and this thing is loaded. It contains all of the video footage of the origional Voyager Captain, named Genevieve Bujold. A French-Canadian woman who I must say, wouldn't have done the job justice. She was grey haired, shorter than Janeway was, and a lot smaller in body size. Her first officer just towered above her. She didn't have the fight in her voice Janeway had. I'm so glad they went with Mulgrew.

Well, as I go through teh DVD's in the next few days I'll update this topic with more information. Suffice it ot say, I'm EXTREMELY pleased with my purchase. For the only DVD's I ever intend on buying in my life, this was the right choice.

Oh, and btw, price wise, the Voyager DVD's are a lot less expensive than DS9 was as it came out. Less than a $100 for the Voyager ones starting, DS9 started at like $120. Pretty reasonable for a total of

15 episodes at over 13 hours of Star Trek entertainment!

I have a feeling that I'm going to love Season 1. It's a whole series of episodes I've never seen in Star Trek! It's going to be a great few weeks.

Hey there,

I had heard it featured the footage of the first CO. I also think it shows several screen tests that actually had Janeway with her hair down (aka: Season 4 - 7) from the beginning. A shame they didn't stick with that.

It does! You should see it!

Genevieve Bujold as Captain Janeway. She's a French-Canadian actor with the accent to match. She was shorter than Janeway, had grey hair, and was a smaller build. Her XO literally TOWERED above her. Not to mention, she just didn't have the authority in her voice that Mulgrew had. At least 5 minutes of footage with her.

Janeway with her hair down, about a minute of that. It wasn't the nice down as in the later seasons, it was a down that had it very loose and it tended to fly around. Apparently, the hair cost a ton of money for them in the first episode. Paramount didn't like it down, so they made Mulgrew put it up.

Janeway's early bun just seemed more Captain-like.

Recieved my Season 1 DVD in the mail yesterday. Watched Caretaker as I curled into bed last night. Was great seeing the series again. :)

Not yet. I've been very busy the past several days, so I have not had a chance to watch it yet. I have been trying to watch one each night as I head to bed.
