Maenak's Day Out

Maenak's Day Out

From the combined wisdom and wit of Rike, Ch'Paar, Morgana and Elijah....

(please note that this takes place before the most recent sim)

Mailliw tr'Rike stood outside the HIC Chamber io and tapped the last few parameters of the G'olfing program into the etrehh. "Simulation complete. You may enter when ready," stated the etrehh. As the doors opened Mailliw surveyed the terrain and finally his gaze rested on a massive structure before him. His stride was anxious and even. He breathed deeply and took in the scents of freshly mowed turf, and in the background he could hear the low whine of the carts and even the schwack of the club. As he entered the structure, he causally greeted a few familiar faces on his way to the locker room. Once there, he quickly changed and headed for the lounge. He tapped his comm badge and spoke "Rike to Ch'Paar. Rogue this is your wake up call. We are to tee off in a short while. I am waiting in the lounge in the clubhouse."

Rogue rubbed her eyes sleepily and looked at the chronometer on her desk. It seemed to her that time had passed too quickly and her nap was too soon ended. Groggily she responded, "Yes, Mailliw, I'll join you shortly." Quickly, she rain a brush through her ever growing hair and changed into clothes more befitting the outing. She kissed her sleeping child and gave the attending nanny some last minute instructions and headed out the door and down the corridor.

He then tapped his badge again. "Rike to Ksa. I have arranged a tee time for our group. Please see that Etre Elijah gets the message. I will be waiting in the lounge of the clubhouse."

"Ie, rekkhai, we are on our way." Morgana quickly responded.

As the Kheinsa entered the clubhouse, she was amazed by how accurately Rike had managed to capture the ambiance of the setting. Polished brass and lush greenery decorated the bar area. With a sly smile, she noticed him sitting at the warm, highly shined wood that served as the bar proper. She quietly approached him and slipped up behind him. "Excuse me....but you were recommended to me as a suitable...caddy."

Rike spun on his stool and considered the woman before him. "Caddy? Perhaps you should ask a security thug if you desire someone to carry your back. Then again, being a woman, you can't possibly have the strength to lug those irons across eighteen holes." He ducked instinctively, but the only thing that assaulted him was the sound of laughter. Looking up he watched as she slid onto the stool next to him. She smirked self-confidently and leaned closer to him. "Care to make a little wager on that, I'll even give you a handicap." Rike smiled and gave his head a slight shake. "I don't need a handicap...I'll be playing the one who *is* handicapped." He leaned back on the stool. "And if you win?"

"I'll clean medical for a week." She crossed her panted legs nonchalantly. Rike nodded his agreement and then narrowed his eyes. "If I lose?" Rogue chuckled. "You get to baby-sit for me for a week. The nanny has requested some time off to visit her family."

"Thank the Elements....I was afraid you were going to make me eat your cooking." The maenak and the kheinsa shared the joke and chatted for a while about the most recent adventure of the Talon crew and discussed the ways in which their two departments could work together with greater efficiency.

A few moments later t'Ksa and Elijah entered the HIC and quickly headed for the clubhouse. Morgan grinned from ear to pointed ear at the view in front of her, the sunshine and the warm breezes simulated by the etrehh. "Now, this is more like it," she chuckled. "No snow, no cold weather, no thunderstorms and most of all, no earthquakes."

"Your biases are showing Morgana, even though it was a little bad, I really did enjoy the away duty. I got to practice my craft, help people and still had time to make tr'Italian food to boot." Elijah could smell the fresh cut grass, but could not get past the feeling that setting was contrived, an image from someone's mid. "Unrecycled air, real rain, even pounding sleet...those are real."

"Well, I think you need to seek professional help if you enjoyed that crazy weather", Morgana replied as they entered the clubhouse. Off in the distance, sitting at one of the bars in the lounge, the two finally met up with Rike and Ch'Paar and a few minutes later, the foursome were headed out to the green, ready for a relaxing game of g'olf.

Mailliw stepped out of the cart and drew his driver from the bag. "This should do nicely," he smiled and stepped onto the tee and placed the ball. After a few practice strokes, he made his drive. The tiny white ball sailed high and straight for nearly 100 meters before it touched back down rolling just short of the green. Satisfied with the results, he stepped back and returned the club to its place in the bag. He then watched as Rogue moved to take her turn. "Now let us remember, we were here not to compete but rather to relax and enjoy the day."

"Well, most of us aren't here to compete." She slipped one of the balls from her pouch on her bag and tossed it up in the air a few times before placing it carefully on the tee. She lined herself up with the ball carefully and wrapped her slim fingers around the shaft of her seven iron. As she settled into her stance, she heard Rike behind her. "Better watch how you swivel those hips, you rotate too far and you'll end up in the water."

She glanced behind her and glared at him playfully. "You keep talking and it is you who will end up there." Turning her attention once more to the ball, she took a deep breath. Carefully she raised the iron, being carefully to lock her wrists. Exhaling, she swung and followed through. The head of the iron hit the ball with a resounding thwap and a few blades of grass flew into the air. Her golden eyes searched the air for a few seconds, then located the flying object. With a satisfied hum, she watched the ball bounce to within a few fee of Rike's ball. "The chase is on," she chuckled gaily. It felt good to be out of the controlled open air. No chance of the elements going wild and shaking the ground beneath her feet here. As the ball rolled to just within the perimeter of the sorter grass, she slid the iron back into her bag. "You better hope that you putt better than I." Then she stood back to let the next member of the foursome take their place.

Morgana put her ball on the tee, but at the same time thought someone needed to reprogram the game. Imagine starting with a short Par 3, how pedestrian, she chuckled to herself. Clearly the programmer wasn't a real g'olfer or the program was defective. Nonetheless, she took out her pitching wedge, took a three quarter swing, and put he ball on the green, pin high and about 6 away from the hole which would be an easy putt for a birdie. She turned and smiled shyly to the group then motioned to Elijah to take his turn. Morgana smiled inwardly as she recalled someone mumbling "I am Tiger tr'Woods, I am Tiger tr'Woods" as before they took their swing.

After these three impressive displays, Elijah knew he was in trouble and out of his league. Slowly, he moved to the clubs and chose the six iron, not for some technical reason, but because it caught his eye first. Ch'Paar and Rike, relaxed and in discussion, Morgana watching intently, Elijah firmly placed the tee far too deep in the ground to be effective, and placed the ball just so on the tack of wood. Hoping not to make a complete idiot of himself, he attempted to emulate the three which preceded him. Looking more like a spasmodic mantis rather than a seasoned veteran, Elijah swung with all his might at the ball in front of him. The ball, obeying the strange law of holophysics and clipped by the head of the club flew in chaotic formation, bouncing off a tree, then another tree, off the glass windows of the clubhouse, rolling over the curb, bouncing into another tree, off the club's caddy only to roll back where it started. With a strained voice in measured tones, Elijah spoke...."That can na be good."

Ch'Paar, Rike and Ksa watching in amazement could barely hold in the laughter. Morgana felt brave enough to speak first..."Au have na done this before, have au?"

"Ie, they called it tr'miniature golf. It seems not too dissimilar in form, except, the hole seems..." squinting off into the distance, "...much father, eh?" Morgana, sensitive to Elijah's plight, subtly motioned for Rike and Ch'Paar to go ahead a bit, while she dealt with Elijah's golf inadequacy. Nodding, she answered, "Ie, do au require some assistance?" Morgana selected a club, no waiting for a reply.

Elijah, wondering if holoballs were telekinesisable, "I'm sure I'll fine. I just need to, umm, orient myself." Elijah looked off to the distance, spying the eventual goal of this spherical demon. In the hope that he can change the subject away from this inadequate golf game, Elijah changed the subject. "I know that everyone is happy to be off the planet, but I'm not sure I am. When you live on a space station, you never get much of the elements. I think I could have stayed there a little while longer."

"I've never thought of it that way, I guess I took the elements for granted back home, wide open spaces, breezes and the ocean" ...and better g'olf courses, Morgana added mentally.

"The weather patterns there were unusual to say the least, I especially liked seeing the t'ornado. I just kept thinking about home...and how different it was. We were in a deep space station, not orbiting a planet but literally in deep space. We rarely got planetside." Elijah's thought began to wander to the Federation colony on Lunas II, the one time before he entered the Galae when he really spent time on the planet. He had wanted to spend some time in the wilderness, and Lunas was just the place to do it. "Well, here it goes again...if we never start, I'll never finish!" Elijah pulled back the club in a vague imitation of Morgana's swing, "G'eronimo!" To his credit, the ball flew straight and true...into the water, all be it closer to the green. Morgana, shaking her head and laughing, "Na, au aren't aiming right. Here, let me show au."

Morgana took her position at the tee, and showed Elijah a swing. "Can you show me that again?" Elijah asked while he stood behind Morgana and watched her demonstrate the correct form. "I'm not sure I have it." Elijah stepped up from behind Morgana, grabbing her hands and the club, snugly against her back, "Show me again."

Morgana, feeling the heat and pressure of Elijah behind her, swallowed and nervously slowed the swing again. Voice cracking, "See the line on the club? Line it up in the direction au want the ball to go, then get square to the ball, stand relaxed with au's feet shoulder length apart. Then swing like au did before."

Together, they practiced their swing, hologolfers complaining that they are taking too long to tee off. "You smell wonderful, Morgana." Slowly and methodically, Elijah stepped away, purposely brushing his hand against Morgana's waist. "We should play more often, I need a good partner."

Ksa blushed. "I'd be glad to teach au, anytime. Are au ready to try it on au's own?"

"I better, because I think Maenak Rike is getting tired of us taking so long," Elijah cleared his throat and exclaimed "Here goes nothing!" Elijah took another swing which, although it is appreciably better in form, still missing the green. "Are au sure this is na a par 6?"

Ksa laughed, "Na, but at the rate au are playing we'll be here all day. Much better Elijah, very good." She smiled "Okay," Elijah replied as eh picked up both Morgana's and his clubs, "We should get moving. I'll take a...'mugilicuddy'?"

"A what?!?" Ksa replied, not sure she heard him right. Elijah, once again showing his ignorance of g'olf decided to keep it quiet. "Um...never mind. Let's just go."

As the four g'olfing maenaks approached the green, the ship wide comm was activated. Morgana frowned as Rike quickly answered the call. "So much for Maenak's Day Out," she mumbled looking at the disappointed faces of Rike, Ch'Paar and Elijah.
