The Manticore was investigating a black hole when it was pulled into a temporal displacement field and finds itself 5,000 years in the future. The sensors detect no humans or other sentient beasts on the Earth. The scans of the "cities" show stone and earthen structures overgrown with thousands of years of neglect. At the same time, the stresses of the trip caused damage to the engines and left us running on a low supply of liquid Deuterium for all systems. Having almost no power left, we abandoned the ship and left only 4 people behind to repair the damage while the crew went planetside to try to fabricate Deuterium. We have been on the planet for a month now, setting up a long-term encampment, growing food and manufacturing Deuterium for the ship - our first allotment is finally ready.
