Oscar Nominations and Predictions

26 posts in this topic

I mean what could you guys expect. I woke up at 8:30 Est just to watch the Academy President and Sigourney Weaver annouce the nominations this morning and I'm not a morning person.

Okay first off this was the first time that I was shocked with with the announcement of the nominations. I was litterly flabberghasted. Some shocking shuns and some interesting choices made by the Academy that shows they've been paying attention to the films of last year rather than trying to appear as some elitist group with a "Only boring people" sign on the door. Well I should stop ranting and talk about the nominations.

One quick note I won't go over the technical awards (i.e. Sound editing, Costumes, etc.). They will more than likely be sweeped up by Lord of the Rings. :P

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:

Shohreh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog

Patrica Clarkson, Pieces of April

Marcia Gay Harden, Mystic River

Holly Hunter, Thirteen

Renée Zellweger, Cold Mountain

Alright to kick it off. One category with which I was shocked and amazed with only three of the five I thought were going to be nominated were. Shohreh Aghdashloo and Marcia Gay Harden two big upsets in this category. But supporting categories are always a little more difficult to predict than most others.

It will probably go to Renee Zellweger for Cold Moutain.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:

Alec Baldwin, The Cooler

Benicio Del Toro, 21 Grams

Djimon Hounsou, In America

Tim Robbins, Mystic River

Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai

No big shocks here except for Djimon Hounsou, I didn't see that one coming but this one was no huge shocker. I was kinda hoping for Sean Astin to get a nod here or Andy Serkis, but one can only hope. :)

My prediction for this one is Tim Robbins for Mystic River

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE:

Brother Bear

Finding Nemo

The Triplets of Belleville

Nothing much to say here. Finding Nemo is a crowd favorite but the Academy may go for The Triplets of Belleville, which was rather interesting, Triplets has been big amongst critics so ya never now. Brother Bear doesn't stand a chance.

Close can't make a clear predicition, it's gonna be between Nemo and Belleville.

BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM :

The Barbarian Invasions, Canada

Evil, Sweden

The Twilight Samurai, Japan

Twin Sisters, The Netherlands

Zelary, Czech Republic

Alright don't know what to say about this one. I've only seen "The Barbarian Invasions" so I can't make a fair prediction on this category. But just to appease our friends to the north....

Gonna go for The Barbarian Invasions.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:

American Splendor, Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman

City of God, Braulio Mantovani

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson

Mystic River, Brian Helgeland

Seabiscuit, Gary Ross

Alright this one is going to be a little tough to predicit. American Splendor and City of God were two very good films. But it's a dead heat between The Lord of the Rings and Mystic River.

Might go either way, If Lord of the Rings sweeps Best Picture and Best Director the Academy may give this as a consolation prize to Mystic River, but then again Lord might sweep all the awards and get this one. Gonna have to go with Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:

The Barbarian Invasions, Denys Arcand

Dirty Pretty Things, Steven Knight

Finding Nemo, Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson and David Reynolds

In America, Jim Sheridan & Naomi Sheridan & Kirsten Sheridan

Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola

All very good movies but this one I can say within a resonable doubt that one of these films stands out as a clear front runner. I don't think that Sofia Coppola will win Director or Best Picture. But as kinda a pat on the back for creating a marvelous film the Academy will give this to her.

I predict Lost in Translation to win this one.

BEST ACTRESS

Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider

Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give

Samantha Morton, In America

Charlize Theron, Monster

Naomi Watts, 21 Grams

Alright the most shocking category in my opinion, as it shunned some major leading ladies. No Nicole Kidman for Cold Moutain or Scarlett Johansson for Girl with a Pearl Earring or even Lost in Translation which amazed me, two big shuns from the Academy. While I don't think Kidman deserved a nomination at all; I thought Johansson was a shoe in for this category for either one of her films. Keisha Castle-Hughes, the youngest female ever nominated in this category, was a major shocker I did not see this one coming from a mile away, she was wonderful in Whale Rider and it was nice to see the Academy nominate her. Same thing for Samantha Morton, two people that definitely deserved the nominations. Charlize Theron and Diane Keaton are the two front runners in this category coming off their globe victories.

Theron will more than likely win over Keaton, but the two are close, but Theron's role in Monster and appearance might garner her the award.

BEST ACTOR

Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Ben Kingsley, House of Sand and Fog

Jude Law, Cold Mountain

Bill Murray, Lost in Translation

Sean Penn, Mystic River

Johnny Depp's nomination in this category was a big shock to everyone. By doing this they shunned out a possible nomination for Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, and Jack Nicholson, all of which who were favored to gain a nomination. I find their choice in Depp was very good call, he derserved if for Pirates, even though he may not win. Bill Murray and Sean Penn are in a dead heat in this one as well due to there Globe's victories. But Penn has always shown a perticular dislike of these award shows and that may hurt his Oscar chances since there are still a lot of politics in the voting of the winners.

I'll go for Murray over Penn, since Penn isn't big on the award shows. Murray's performance in Lost in Translation is enough for him to deserve the award. That and I'm a huge Bill Murray fan.

BEST DIRECTOR

Sofia Coppola, Lost in Translation

Clint Eastwood, Mystic River

Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Fernando Meirelles, City of God

Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Only one big shock here. Fernando Meirelles nomination in this category over Anthony Minghella for Cold Mountain, but even though Mountain led at the Globes with the most Noms, it seems as though the Hollywood Foreign Press may have jumped to conclusions which there nominations, but learned their lesson when choosing the winners. Eastwood has been campaigning hard for Mystic River, with his rather rude commericial (IMO) about "There are no special effects in this film" commerical that is playing in California. But I don't think that mud slinging will gain anyone points in the voting especially with the moumentum that Return of the King has. Jackson didn't win for Fellowship as was completely shunned last year by the Academy for Two Towers. But much of the Buzz has been that the Academy is going to award Jackson for Return of the King for all the hard work he has put into the sucessful trilogy. And he deserves it. :o

Jackson hands down to win this one.

BEST PICTURE:

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Lost in Translation

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Mystic River

Seabiscuit

Alright three out of the five movies on the list I expected to be nominated. The other two I was iffy about. Master and Commander and Seabiscuit were two underdogs in being nominated, with Cold Moutain being a definite nomination, but as you'll notice the acclaimed movie to 'topple the King' got shunned baddly by the Academy; with which I agree with, it was one of those good-but-not-great films B).

My pick for this category The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

And those are my picks to win the awards on Oscar night. Sure we won't know how well I did for month but that makes it all the better. So who do you think is going to win in any of these awards? Got any favorites but think they are not going to win? Please enlighten us and me. :). Anything that might be egging ya as you read? Go on ahead. :)

Don't worry Mr. Seiben. Ya got some really good predictions there :).

I personally like them. Most of my choices were just based on my conscience and on who was more than likely to win. But like I said. I like yer predictions.

Remember there is no wrong or right. Just winners :P

::Cough:: Ahem :P

Hey what can I say. I like movies. That why I'm the film critic geek on the boards. :)

There are only two movies on the whole list that I haven't seen(excluding the Foreign film ones) and that's Dirty Pretty Things and Pieces of April. But like I said I like going to the cinema and I watch as many movies as I can; even the ones that stink.

Ya know, what I think *should* win and what actually will are two different things. The awards appear to me to be based as much on promotion and personality as on merit. I suppose the one good thing is that there is a wide wealth of talent to draw from, so that many of the nominees are indeed worthy. That means more good movies for ME. It's all about me.

I just thought it would be logical to bump this up with the awards looming tonight. Just some reflexions on my picks a month before I even saw some of the guild awards. And most have held up. But as an addition to my original post I decided to add on a "Who will most likely win" and "Who I believe should win". I'll just post it on here just to save me some time as a few of my choices have changed. And as the resident film geek, some of you might be interested in who I think I wil win.

I'm just gonna post up the categories and give you my two choices. And here they are.....:P

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:

Who Will:Renée Zellweger, Cold Mountain

Who Should: Shohreh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:

Who Will:Tim Robbins, Mystic River

Who Should/U]: Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE:

Who Will/Should: Finding Nemo

BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM :

The Barbarian Invasions, Canada

(Only one seen, so to be far I won't pick it as the one to win as I can't accuratly predict this category :D )

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:

Who Will: Mystic River, Brian Helgeland

Who Should: City of God, Braulio Mantovani

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:

Who Will/Should: Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola

BEST ACTRESS

Who Will: Charlize Theron, Monster

Who Should(TIE): Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider and Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give

BEST ACTOR

Who Will: Sean Penn, Mystic River

Who Should (TIE): Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Bill Murray, Lost in Translation

BEST DIRECTOR

Who Will/Should: Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

BEST PICTURE:

Who Wll/Should: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

And there we are some new picks and some same ones. Guess we'll have to see how well I did tonight. :)

P.S. I did a 'should' category to cheat a little, as the shoulds are the ones most likely for an upset against my 'wills' :)

Of all the movies listed, Return of the King is the only one I've seen. I'm not a big movie theater person. I go to see the movies I *really* want to see, and I just wait for the rest to hit DVD/HBO. :) So, I can't choose the most deserving nominees, but I'm certainly pulling for a clean sweep by Rings. :P

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Lost in Translation

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Mystic River

Seabiscuit

Well, I've seen 3 of these, and sat through two of them with my daughter, and two of them with Huff. Sorry, Seabiscuit and Master and Commander were both good movies, but there is absolutey no way they are even in the same catagory as LOTR. Each of those were enjoyable, but once was enough until they make cable, but LOTR......Ok, did Triology Tuesday, saw it 3 times opening day, and 4 more times since.

I already have the calendar circled for the rumored May 25th release date of the theatrical release on DVD, and eagerly anticipate the November release of the Extended Version.

Director Peter Jackson confirmed that the final cut of Return of the King had been completed, with a total running time of four hours and ten minutes.

Honestly, I was thinking of going to see one of the others a few weeks ago, but ended up back at LOTR again. Any movie, that has that kind of pull....says something about it.

But that's my 2 cents....

Well my Who Wins won in all but one category. And that pick was just my pity choice. What can I say. I'm good :)

Big congrats go out to Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for sweeping all the awards it was nominated in. Winning 11 Oscars, tying for the most ever won by any film with Ben-Hur and Titanic.

So happy to see the Academy give the Director and the Film it's proper recognition.

Thank you and good night!! :P

no way they are even in the same catagory as LOTR.

11 for 11 baby!! Like I said....nothing near it. :)

Tied for most Oscars won with Ben Hur and Titantic.

It's about time a Fantasy/SciFi genre film finally won something besides Best Special Effects, or Musical Score. It's just too bad that Sean Astin wasn't nominated for Best Supporting, to make it an even dozen.

It's also too bad they didn't wake up for the prior two movies.

Can go to bed happy now.....

Blu

Methinks they were waiting for it to be all good and done. This way, they're acknowledging the work as a whole. Plus, you wouldn't want to jump the gun in case Peter Jackson randomly decided to throw in some ruby slippers or something in there at the end ^.^

But yes, clean sweep! Woo hoo! ::passes out seltzer to everyone and promptly douses Vex::
