I've been to startrekfans.net site and it's really cool. For instance, for every post you put on the site is one post closer to the next rank.

:) :D :P :)

Membership ranking? Where when you reach a specific number of posts, you get promoted up a speical rank.. Nahh.. that'l just increase the number of SPAM posts, just so someone can up their rank. :P A waste of time, IMO.

In addition to encouraging spam, it also can be somewhat confusing for new folks to see "ranks" listed in there. It's possible to have some person who is an Ensign with a rank of "Admiral" on the boards.

I see the boards here as just a place to sit back and keep in contact with others in the forum. We all know most of each other's ranks, but here.... they don't really matter. The only real "authority" on the boards are the board's moderators. And even then, we only use the "power" when we absolutely have to. We enjoy just chatting here and such too. We just get the extra duty of cleaning up any messes when they occur. :P

My two cents.

I guess since nobody liked my idea. I won't be posting how startrekfans.net has their ranking set up by how many posts you have. ::puts her head down and starts to walk away::

I've found that this forum is a lot, lot, lot less hardcore trek discussion. Just about the only thing we do disscuss is the weekly ENT episode, and the ocasional poll on which series is the best.

A rank system, would just let people spam, and do other stupid things. We had enough controversy over the post counter, and bringing something in like that, would only apaise the people that are here to get spam posts.

Hey there,

The concept of a ranking system was discussed several months ago on these boards. It came up again when there were people who started spamming to get up their post count. This situation got so bad that post counts themselves disappeared for a period of time because folks simply couldn't get the message. Posts aren't supposed to be about quantity as they are quality.

I have seen ranking systems in place on boards before. However, I've also seen situations where it becomes a serious situation. I honestly don't think it's needed. People can see how many posts you have. What would be the point of a rank? So an Ensign can feel important because they have the rank of Captain on the boards?

I'd much prefer my rank to be based on something MEANINGful! You know, like how many hours I've sat in the green glow of my lava lamp playing imaginary people on imaginary starships. :)

I still think you people don't like my idea. Besides that it does not cause spaming. I just think you people don't know what I'm talking about. Today, I reached the rank of Lt. (jg) which has a range of posts from 26 to 50 posts.

Spamming it stuff like:

Lol

and thats the size of the post, or you get people making lots new topics causing flooding which isn't needed for such a small forum, though if you could make Admiral in 6 posts then it might just be a cool thing to look at.

I think folks do know what you mean. When they speak of spamming, they mean that people will post useless or minimal responses to all sorts of messages, just to increase their total post count and get that "promotion." This is one of the reasons that the STSF Boards won't be using this type of system. Thanks.

If you want to do ranks then why not show the person's actual STSF rank. Cadet if they haven't graduated. regular ranks if they're on a ship. Just a thought

There are a couple reasons we don't do real rank:

- It'd be a manual process. Anytime someone was promoted or someone was added, we'd have to manually assign they're rank.

- People use the same message board account and have several characters.

Besides... I've never been a person to stand on rank. :) As I've said... rank should not play a real roll here on the message boards. Each person's comments and ideas are just as valid as another's. :P

Let me add my half cent - it was two cents but you know how taxes are.

Many sims use ranking systems that are not exactly cannon. Sky Harbor Aegis, for example, starts you off as a Midshipman which in real life is Navy-speak for Cadet. Then there is the Manticore and a couple others that have Marine contingents. My own ship, IKC QoB~Lakota, invented a Lieutenant Senior Grade rank in addition to Lieutenant Junior Grade and "full" Lieutenant. And don't even get me started on the Klingon and Romulan ranks.

Of course if rank does mean that much you can always add it to your signiture.

Yeah - what he said! (but Manticore doesn't have Marines actually, just spies... oops, did I say that with my outloud voice?)

Well that all depends on if you pronounced the "(" and the ")" marks.
