Exactly.. just as the fine examples I've posted France made some fine automobiles, as I've stated, some do breakdown, but most French cars are very reliable.. like the Pugeots, Citreons and Renaults. But because Americans don't like small hatchbacks, they are not offered for sale here. Which really is quite a shame. :P

I love the style of the older cars from the 40s. And of course the first corvette. But as it goes with comfort and interior, I couldn't ignore a modern mercedes or volvo. Anything without sat radio, GPS, and leather with an ergonomic full interior would just kill me to drive every day.

As for the safety issue, cars are safer than they ever have been. Cars are designed to crumble...this is so, for example, the steering column doesn't get thrust through the driver's chest (a common event from front end collisions in older cars). Cars now have full cabin airbags enclosing the passengers. Most old cars before the 60s didnt even have seat belts. And glass is well improved so that people impacting them aren't decapitated. Accidents happen and people will find the most amazing ways to die from them, but I'd put my kids in a 2003 Volvo than some big steel 50s Chevy any day!

I guess it depends on what you consider to be "safe", and you have to remember that our driving habits have changed from past eras. Cars handle better now but for a lot of people this creates a false sense of security, and an increase in unsafe behavior. And it's true that, since cars are made of lighter materials now, when they do get in an accident they are more likely to end up at the wreckers, but the driver is also more likely to walk (well, OK, limp) away from the accident.

I'd agree with that. SUVs are a big killer in America today. Unfortunately a lot of it has to do with incompetence on the part of the driver. SUVs are topheavy and are more prone to roll over, and everyone pretty much knows it...but you still see people on the freeway in SUVs, if they get into trouble, they swerve like crazy out of the way. Most people driving SUVs have no idea how to drive them.

Here's another question thats car related.

You always hear about these SUVs running over small cars. So who's making the unsafe automobile...Ford who makes a giant Excursion that can roll over little cars, or the carmaker that makes a car with a roof 3 feet off the ground that an SUV can easily drive over?
