STSF.NET Chat Room Aide

Synopsis: A guide of the way the STSF.NET Emergency Chat Rooms work.

The STSF.NET Emergency Chat Rooms are not designed for optimal performance... mainly because they are rarely used. But, instructions need to be developed... along with the Do's and Don'ts to make the chat run smoothly. This isn't going to cover how to access the chat room, but rather how it works and what to do to make it run better.

SUGGESTIONS:

Greater than/lesser than < > signs do not work in the STSF.NET chat rooms. You will have to use brackets [[ ]] or parenthesis (( )) for OOC context.

Don't use any colors. They only cause lag in the chat room. (Yes, I know they are available. But that doesn't mean they're great to use.)

Don't use smilies. They tend to just slow down the chat room and cause lag, including havoc if often used for dial-up users. (Yes, this is available too. But again, that doesn't mean you have to use it.)

When you enter text and press the ENTER key, don't press the key again until you hear that "clicking" noise indicating the page has refreshed. Otherwise, the same text will be posted multiple times.

If lag occurs in the chat room, DO NOT continue pressing "SEND" or the ENTER key. This only continues the lag even longer, and causes the same text from you to be posted every time you hit "SEND."

Don't use any HTML text (i.e. <i>, <b>, <red>, etc.). This drastically slows down the chat room and causes lag.

FAQ:

Question: Is there a User's Online list where I can see who else is in the room?

Answer: Yes. In the upper-right corner of the chat room, there are four links. The first one from the right says "Who's There," and clicking that will display a list of the user's online in both chat rooms.

----

Question: Do I have to register at these chat rooms, or can I just go in? Does it use the same username and password as my StarTrek.com Community username?

Answer: No, you do not have to register. However, it is an option if you wish to use and keep the same username. Unregistered users may use the chat room by simply entering in a username. No, the StarTrek.com Community username and password do not apply at the STSF.NET chat rooms. They run off of two seperate databases.

----

Question: Do the STSF.NET chat rooms have a Private Message feature?

Answer: Yes, the STSF.NET chat rooms do allow Private Messaging (PM). There is a link near the SEND area of the chat rooms labeled "Private Rooms." This is the Private Messaging system.

----

Question: Can I use my HTML (hex) color codes on the STSF.NET chat rooms?

Answer: No, the HTML (hex) color codes do not work at the STSF.NET chat rooms.

----

Question: Can I make my font italicized or bold on the STSF.NET chat rooms?

Answer: Theoretically, yes. But, it does cause problems with the chat room (which are easily resolved) for other user's text. It is strongly recommended that you refrain from using any type of HTML codes in the STSF.NET chat rooms.

----

Question: What is that incredibly annoying "clicking" noise?

Answer: The chat room must be 'refreshed' every 5 seconds to post new text to the screen. That "clicking" noise is heard when the page is refreshed. Best solution? Turn off or mute the speakers. (There are hacks available for you to download for your computer, but this will get rid of every "clicking" noise forever when a page refreshes or is loaded.)

Actually, I've found that the < > work in the chat room as long as there's a space after and before. For example <CSci> will not display, but < CSci > will.

This is handier for people in the habit of using <>.
