Happy 11th Birthday Arcadia

32 posts in this topic

This Sunday, the U.S.S. Arcadia will celebrate it's 11th anniverary. It began on AOL back on December 14, 1992 and has been a Wednesday night fixture ever since. None of the original players still participate, but some folks have been on the roster as long as 1994 and have seen many changes.

Some interesting factiods:

The first sim was played on AOL Ver 1.0 ... for DOS

The TNG Episode Chain of Command Part I aired for the first time that night. This was the first appearance of Cardassians.

DS9 would premier 3 weeks later.

One of our early Captains left the game to join the AOL Games Channel as an administrator and later was in charge of SFOL. (name omitted to protect the innocent and the reputation of my fragile memory).

We are devoting next Wednesday's sim to a a fleet-wide birthday party, the location of which A9 promised me would get posted on the stsf.net home page. On behalf of the crew, we hope you'll all join us, help us celebrate and reminisce, and have a piece of virtual birthday cake. Wednesday night, 11 pm Est.

Until then, please help me remember tidbits of the Startrek world from 1992 and post them here.

Gee, I can only imagine what that was like. Putting around the ancient internet in your old 486, or 386. Must have taken forever to log in. ::shudders at the thought:: Anyways, contratulations for lasting that long. B) I guess I'll bring the virtual champange! ::pops cork:: Happy anniversary, and here's to 11 more! ::Cheers:: B)

Captain James T. Kirk hadn't died yet in Star Trek: Generations....

We had just been brought back to the original U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701, along with Captain Scott with the TNG episode "Relics". It aired October 12, 1992.

The Hallmark Star Trek Christmas item, at this stage only the 2nd one ever made, was the Shuttlecraft Galileo (NCC-1701/7) featuring the voice of Lieutenant Commander Spock.

Dechiper gained it's first contract to create Star Trek role-playing cards in 1992...

It had been one year (to the day) since DeForest Kelly got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (December 18, 1991).

Early in 1992, Nichelle Nicholas received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (January 9, 1992).

51 years earlier, Japan invaded Hong Kong.

1992 was the year Paramount started making models of the Enterprise-D. Which I have.

April 1st, 1992- The young Travis Kroells turns four years old, and begins his obsession of StarTrek.

A decade and one year latter he would become a lieutenant, and chief of science onboard the USS Reaent.

Small beginings huh?

I was ten and 5 months when the Arc started. I wasn't interested in Star Trek at the time either. I didn't become interested until an old friend of mine introduced me to simming in. . . .'96 I believe it was. With so much of an unpredictable schedule I wasn't able to join myself, only able to sit and watch over my friend's shoulder. The sim I started watching was the USS Arcadia. I enjoyed watching so much that I later got myself into simming. That friend of mine was a player the old Arcadians knew as JJ (96'-98' I believe. My memory is probably as bad as the Moose though). I talked to him earlier in the day and told him about the party, and the existence of this forum. He apologizes for not being able to make it to the party, for he's gotta work that evening. But he says that he hopes to get back into simming real soon. And he says hi to any and all Arcadians left over from his time period.

Which raises the obvious question of how you got to be captain?

::Imagines a wet nosed ensign named Moose::

Since Travis brought it up, here's a tidbit from my archives ...

Subj: Orders!!!

Date: 94-10-04 19:33:34 EDT

From: ComoMorgyn

To: EnsnMoose

Ensign Moose:

I have reviewed the current roster of the USS Arcadia and have

confirmedFCaptKerin by E-Mail as soon as possible for information on mission

status and station assignment. He has been sent a copy of your orders and

will be expecting contact from you. The ship next sails at 11 PM EASTERN on

Wednesday, October 58 1994 in the FINAL FRONTIER (use keyword SIM and it's in

the simming folder). Plan to attend that mission.

After you have completed a few missions, please send me a brief report to let

me know how your are doing.

If questions, comments or problems arise during your tour in Starfleet, I

remain available as a point of contact. Please feel free to contact me.

Of course, the Academies remain open to you for additional experiences and

practice. You are authorized to use your "Ens" screen name when

participating in the Academy.

Good luck on your first assignment. You are joining a fine ship and I am sure

you will serve with distinction.

1992: Online simming began spreading, and groups such as AOL and Prodigy began groups. (Prodigy being the oldest.) At this time, SFOL was still a private club. (1994 - SFOL merged with AOL.)

1992: By this date, simming had been around for at least 23 years. (Yes, in the late 60s, there was PBM [Play-By-Mail] simming.)

Play-by-mail.. Oh, that'd be so slow it wouldn't be funny. :) Side note: The Internet was invented in 1969, but did nt become available to the puiblic ntil the early 90s. :) One more little factoid.

You mean Al Gore didn't invent it? :)

Or it's like Homer Simpson said: "Ooh, they have the internet on the computer now!"

Well back in 92 I was 7 years old and had just gotten into Star Trek after seeing "Best of Both Worlds" the first episode of Star Trek I ever saw (Well that I remember watching). And because of Star Trek it launced my early fascination with space and I wanted to become an Astronaut and also to go into Astronomy. I was a NASA freak....:)

But that was shot down a few years later (I think l was 12), when I decided to study forensics thanks to a little movie, that my parents finally let me watch, called "Silence of the Lambs". Amazing how entertainment can infulence a small childs future :)

That sounds exactly like me. First I loved space since I watched StarTrek, then dinosaurs with the making of Jurassic Park, and then forensics when C.S.I came out.

Hey!! Easy on that poor 486!! That's my 2nd backup. Had to use that a few times already due to the new laptop being crappy and continually crapping out on me, and my husband already working on the good desktop computer. Due to lack of speed and manuverability.. it's still on AOL 5.0 and PT 3.6!! An oldie...but hey..it still works in a pinch. :)
