What did you think of Best of Both Worlds?

I give it a 10. I thought it had a good plot to it and it really started the tension between the Federation and the Borg. I think this episode also really started the making of more Borg episodes.

I'll go you better than that. Until Best of Both Worlds, the Star Trek franchise was in serious danger of dying out. Let's face it, before that episode the only major difference in the writing between TNG and TOS was the Captain had less hair. There were even rumors that the only way Paramount would agree to continue the series was if Picard was no longer Captain (which might have added to BOBW's success). Best of Both Worlds was the episode that caused fans to start to notice what was then a new series, and they were smart to do it as the end of one season and the beginning of another as it would assure everyone would talk about it during the summer and tune in for the season opener (Except for me - I was in Korea at the time.), and it marked a major change in the writing style of the rest of the series.

The episode was pivotal to the entire franchise. Without Best of Both Worlds there could not be a First Contact, which is the most successful Star Trek movie to date both in terms of revenue and fan appreciation. And without First Contact there could be no Enterprise since it laid out the history of things to come.

Even more important, it marked the fist time that smart-alec Wesley Crusher's bright engineering idea didn't work! B)

I like it, but not to the point where some of you guys are taking it...It was a good episode, and Vanroy's right about the turn around point. Liked it.

Hey there,

The importance of Best of Both Worlds can be said quite simply. It is what ensured the survival of the post-TOS Star Trek television franchise. B) This is the episode that really helped bring TNG into it's own and secured it's future. After this adventure, everything changed. The characters, stories, energy level, etc.

I doubt there will ever be an episode out there that will envoke such shock, horror and excitement. Now, this may be slightly different for those that didn't see it when it first came out. This was a day and age when there wasn't the Internet hype, rumor mills and more. No one had a clue Picard would be assimilated! No one could imagine he'd be used to destroy almost all of Starfleet!

This was the day and age when the Borg were a force to be truely feared. It's a shame later incarnations (::cough:: Voyager) destroyed that image, but that's another topic for another day. I would say this episode will probably sit up there with the best ever for the life of the Star Trek Franchise. If for nothing else that today, most folks can find out what the season finale of a show will be about 6 months before hand.

The episode had a lot of suspense. Picard practically trying to fight his own mind. Then destroying a whole fleet at Wolf 359.

There will never be another episode as good as it.

I give it a ten, because Picard, at the end and in Family, finally gets in touch with his "feeling" side.

The only way I think it could have been improved would be to show more of the Wolf 359 battle itself. You know, show Picard/Locutus directing the Borg effort, showing Federation tactical weaknesses, etc.

They do show some of it in the first episode of DS9.

Yeah, but I was hoping I could hear Locutus's telepathic voice saying "They have no defense against our cutting beam." or something like that. It would have created a more ominous mood and would have shown why Locutus was so valuable to the Borg.

Thats true. But they always skip huge battles. They didnt do anything for the Dominion War. At least I dont think they did.

I gave it a 10. It really shows how the Federation can defeat the Borg.

The thing is though all episodes that involve the Borg show how the Federation can beat the Borg. Especially the Voyager episodes.
