Roddenberry Back in Star Trek?

32 posts in this topic

Filmforce at IGN had a story on Friday about plans to hire Gene Roddenberry's son, Eugene, as "a conduit between the franchise and the fans." The article goes on to quote Eugene on several points, thought the article does focus on Rick Berman as a source of fan ire. A better article is perhaps IGN's source at SyFy Portal.

If this deal is completed, does it represent a shift in Paramount's attitude toward fans of Star Trek? Or is it merely a PR ploy to attempt to save an arguably dying franchise?

IGN article:

Putting the Roddenberry Back in Star Trek

SyFy Portal article:

Roddenberry Family May Return To Star Trek

This would not be the first time something like this happened in sci-fi. Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert is continuing his father's work in the Dune novels and is now working on a series of prequels.

Hey there,

If we were only so lucky to have one of the BB twins leave would this ever become a reality. I would hope someone in the higher levels of Paramount would be seeing that Berman and Braga's vision for this franchise isn't what fans are looking for. I mean, recent movies have been evidence enough of that.

As for their vision of Enterprise, heck...Berman's still upset Paramount forced him to put the words "Star Trek" in the title. He's probably also upset he's now got writers who seem to be doing quality story telling. I'll bet you $20 he gets most of them fired because they're not being corney enough for his tastes.

Well guess I will be the optimistic one...

It would apear that Paramount, who has a lot of money invested in Star Trek, is making an effort to save the Franchise.

Amen is all i have to say...Amen. I haven't liked Berman since day one!

I'm not sure which one, but one of the "twins" also had a hand in SciFi Channel's remake of Battlestar Galactica airing tonight. BSG fans (at least the ones old enough to remember the original series) aren't happy about that either.

I mean, a woman Starbuck? Come on! B)

With his son in the buisness he'll turn it around and fire Burman.

I hope.

Actually I don't think there is much chance of that, the articles seemed to question whether Eugene would have any input on the shows themselves. Both articles seemed to indicate that he would serve only in a sort of public relations role.

My opinion is that Berman and Bragga have the franchise so securely fastened to themselves that any attempt to remove them would result in a power struggle fatal to the franchise's immediate future.

That struggle would probaly result in the Startrek series coming to an end.

Then you know what? Maybe it's just better to let it end, or at least let the franchise take a break. I think the fans would much rather see a successful show like Star Trek end on a high note (like M.A.S.H. and Seinfeld) than half-hearted attempts to resurect the dead.

Even I Love Lucy had to end at some point.

we say that now but won't you miss it guys? i sure as hell will. But now the question isn't even who's fault it is, now the twins should just resign because every trek fan thinks it's their fault and until they go the franchis won't be trusted. Bring in the king's son i say and save the star trek empire!...i am so sad it just isn't funny B)

StarTrek already can never be a one-run series that ends. I hope to see more iterations for years to come. I will like some, I will not like others. I tolerated DS9 and was pleasently rewarded with Voyager. Would fresh blood of any kind be good? Yes, of course. Should they quit while they're ahead? Too late! Haha. Star Trek has never been "ahead," quite frankly. A break here and there is okay, but by all means, keep the series comin'!

Funny... I was thinking how DS9 was my favorite, followed by TNG, and then Voyager. B)

Just shelled out the last of my funds to get Season 7 on DVD. And will be getting Voyager when it comes out on DVD in Feb. lol

But I do agree, keep the series coming... as much as we like to complain about Berman/Bragga, et al... I do think they have done some good for the saga. Just my two cents. =)

Hey there,

This is an interesting thought. But I would suggest glancing at an interview recently posted with Ron Moore. Focus had some to do with the new miniseries he's written/produced, but it also contains a ton of interesting insight into the world of upper management of Star Trek.

Miss it? Like...as in not have Star Trek stories to look forward to once a week, with Rommies and Klingons and strange new races? And, and things blowing up and people fighting and cute little romantic side stories and an overly annoying cat?

::looks around here::

You *do* know what we do here, right? B)

Seriously though, I honestly don't think I'd miss the franchise that much if they stopped making new shows. Heck, I don't even miss it now, since I both refuse to and cannot watch Enterprise (no UPN here for some bizarre reason). I've still got my Spike TV TNG reruns (the Golden Age of Star Trek, and let no one tell ya different B)), and I'm afraid to admit I sometimes enjoy the intricate stories we come up with for our sims more than any of the TV shows. But, that's just me.

I've ignored this topic for too long, its making me sick how you guys are bashing Bermen and most of you haven't given him a fair chance to begin with when most of you say that TNG is your favorite series when it really didn't get good until Bermen took over and he is talented and a lot of you are probably mad because he changes stuff and things like making it at a station which if you ask me DS9 was great because it showed many aspects of modern day society which Star Trek is all about, He placed them in the Delta Quadrant which to me was showing us greatly how we need to respect foriegn cultures because at the time of the series we really didn't do at that time and still don't today. Now Enterprise is great because there are several things about modern day in it that we hadn't had much of in the previsious series like how I always precieved Vulcans as America telling smaller nations (Earth) what they are ready for and so much more.

Now if all you care about is continuity and special effects and stuff on that side of the fence, then you have no right to call yourself a trekkie or a trekker because that is not what star trek is about or has ever been about even when Gene was around Star Trek is about education and lessons about todays society and if you can't see that go watch Star Wars and leave real trekkies alone and stop getting on a hang nail because Janeway had an annoying voice or Enterprise NX saw a Ferangi.

I doubt Eugene will have any real power, just a figure head to make people think that the better episodes are due to a Roddenberry being back.

And as for the twin bashing, I dont really care, I liked Voyager, and most of the stuff they worked on, I dont have to much to say.

As long as they dont take to series off T.V I will be happy.

But if they dont make another series I will miss it.

Now as I said before, drop Berman in a nice car, and lets watch him go screw up another series. I say let Majel go nuts with Star Trek, since she has done an excellent job with Andromeda! I mean that series, when someone is trying to kick your butt instea d of walking into the next room. You run, have a quick plan, kick some butt and then figure out why they tried to blast you. Simple equation, no?

Second, when Star Trek was created Gene had some of the best science-fiction writters at the time come to him with stories. Those stories were not produced due to budget constraines. I think its time to ask some of todays science fiction gaints, from Trek, to Dune, to as far as the science fiction book relm goes and ask them for stories. Take the good ones, (I know define good), blow the bucks needed to produce'em, and keep it up for a year or two. Since after stomaching Voyager, we fans deserve a good rock'em sock'em show. If trek wants a new Series, give me The New Frontier, I'd love to see Captain Calhoun on the tube, and hey we can put Patrick back to work with Lenord Nimoy, if he doesn't mind putting on the pointted ears one more time for Peter. Speaking of which, give David competel control over the series.

On a closing note, I will never buy a Voyager DVD, since that show ruined my intrested in trek. Only thing that kept me with the show during that time was RPG with you guys:-)

I am so not going there...wait...yes I am...

The BB twins (notice i am not blaming this all on Berman) has driven the franchise into the ground, this isn't about Enterprise (althought i guess at some level it is) It is about the state of the Franchise, which is and lets all admit it, not what it should be, and i think as director of the Franchise the BB twins get to take the blame (Like some one said about a Football team--Ultimatly the QB and Coach have to take the blame when things ain't going great)

As a parting shot... If we are going to be stuck with Enterprise, at least put it on a major network...not like Viacom doesn't own CBS or anything!!! I think that is at least half the problem with the Franchise that its not accesable to a lot of people, after all it is on UPN, arguablly one of Viacom's worst ideas in a while....

I wouldnt mind a series on the Enterprise-E. That would be pretty interesting. Especially with some of the plot lines from the books they have made.

That should be the next series they make.

And Captain Calhoun has the same last name as my ancestors. Weird.

Another TNG style show! No!

Look, TNG was great, probably the greatest, but seven years of a show, where a bald captain, and his emotionless android run around saving the galaxy with out knowing was enough.

I think every one would jump at the idea, but in a few years would get sick. And as for ENT, its bearly hanging on, so I think that it's been proven that a prequal wont really work.

I'd much rather next have a mini series rather then a new show. Like a six episode shot of a crew during the dominion war or something.

It seems like their almost out of ideas, and when even the twins cant think of a series that they'd think would work, then Star Trek is dead.
