Meh, it was so-so, it started off the series better then the other ones though, besides I didnt really like most of the episodes untill Riker grew a beard anyway, he just looks so bad ass with that thing!

Q was the only thing that made it interesting. If it weren't for that it could have easily been a TOS plot. I don't think the series really got interesting until Q Who?, and that was only because of the Borg.

I did like Troi's outfit but that extra shoulder stripe things always annoyed me and same with Tasha Yar and Worf's badly done ridges :

As mentioned with DS9 and Enterprise... it takes a while for ANY new series to get it's feet under it. Meaning the actors need time to "mesh" with each other, production teams need to learn to work together, writing needs to figure out fully where they want to go with they're work, etc.

It's kind of hard to judge the single episode against any of the other ones. I enjoyed the episode the first time when I saw it... but when going back years later, I realize how much better the series actually got. So that sort of takes away a little of the "glammer" of seeing it the first time.

Hey, I just realised I have more posts on this board than Webbie! In fact, I'm the new #1 poster of all time! :)

Of course Nemesis is a close 3rd, but he got there in about 1/3 of the time Webbie and I have been posting. It probably won't be long before he passes us up. :)

Meh, comme çi, comme ça. (so-so), as far as Series Permieres go for 80's TV shows, It was good. I remember watching "Encounter at Farpoint" for the first time, and I thought it was really good. But, by today's standards, it's quite weak. Still thjough, I like the storyline.. I rated the episode a 6.

I think Enterprise probably had the best first episode and Voyager wasn't that bad with care taker, but I loved how TNG started off completely judging human society and really brought the entire major theme of the series to us right from the very start :)

Hey there,

Watching Encounter At Farpoint was my second introduction to Star Trek. The first time I'd ever seen it was when I headed off to watch Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home....an event my father has never forgiven my mother over.

In any event, at the time I think I thought it was great. Looking back, I shake my head and say "How far they came." It's really shocking when you compare Encounter At Farpoint to All Good Things.... There were so many...I don't know...subplots they had planted in that first episode that never turned out the way they'd hoped.

Picard eventually stopped being this stern unapproachable dictator of a Captain. Riker and Trio's relationship actually developed into a close friendship. Just little things....really amazing to see.

One thing I did find myself wishing though....it would have been great to have seen Worf as Tactical/CSEC from the beginning. I know what they were trying to do with Yar, but even in that first episode it just didn't seem to fit.

I dunno, I think that uniform fit her pretty nicely :D

Hey there,

Well, the fact she shot herself in the foot not thinking TNG was going to go anywhere was a blessing. I mean, even now, I'm not really certain...what was Worf's job during the first part of Season 1? I mean, seriously...what did he do? He wasn't tactical, he wasn't security, he wasn't science, he wasn't operations...so what in the name was he?!?

It just seemed that having that extra position was pointless. Now, if they'd wanted to be bold and have a female First Officer...I could have gone for that...maybe. But Yar's entire purpose seemed....I don't know. She just didn't fit the mold of someone you'd think was this great "tactical" wizard and "physical" person who could take down an intruder with a single blow. That always was what Worf looked to be. It would have been a perfect fit.

Yeah I agree it would've been alright if she didn't soil Data, man how I hated that episode it took away a lot of his child like innocents which is one of the most lovable characters. I did like her daughter though left some interesting things in the plot but I wasn't a Yar fan she was too girly in a post that didn't warrant it, like the one she was taken capture by African people and they didn't do a good job in making her appear tough. :D

I think it would have been better for Worf to be TAC/CSEC at the start of the series. It didnt seem right to have a Klingon in a different post.

Actually I'm not sure those positions belong together. CSEC requires you to coordinate the actions of subordinates, enforce security regulations, ensure safety, etc. In function it is more like a military police position. For TAC all you need is a knowlege of the ship's weapons and defensive systems. It's more of a technical position.

The skill set for the jobs are completely different. I don't know why people like to merge them.

And one of the problems with TNG in the early years is you had too many characters trying to replace Spock. Spock was the XO, the logical one, and the resident alien. These were replaced by Riker, Data, and Worf.

But they were good characters. Ever since then they have had more races join Starfleet. So they set off something. How many Starfleet ships do you see with a Klingon onboard them. Or an android that wants to be human.

Tac and Security positions are very similar because they both include stratedgic and tactical skills not so much technical skills thats for the Engineers and ops :D

Are modern-day MPs familiar with every weapon system used by the Army? I doubt it. So why would we expect Security to be familiar with every weapon system used by the Federation? That's Tactical's job, and I see it as being a lot more technical than just knowing how to fire phasers.

Well they aren't modern day military MP's they are Starfleet security officers who are trained in how to do security of ship which includes ship tactical :D

Nope. Starfleet just puts them in the field and let nature decide their fate.

Thats pretty much what security is. Walking around waiting for something to happen and praying that you dont get killed.

Security is a very complicated role if you do it right with drills, internal security system checks and repairing. There is a lot of engineering in security thats why they wear the same colours as the engineers I think just like why science and medical have the same colours they are similar roles :D
