Give Wesley more credit... lol He may have been somewhat of a PITA on screen... he's actually kind of a cool guy to meet in person. I had a chance to meet him once and chat for a bit.

Same for Garrett Wang... the guy who plays Harry Kim. A very charasmatic fellow and fun to listen to. :)

Hey,

I think Wil Wheaton as a person is a nice guy. I mean, he really seems down to Earth and just the fact he actually manages his own website is shocking to me!

I think he sufferred from horrible writing. The character of Wesley could have become an interesting B plot...similiar to Nog on DS9. But it was not meant to be...so...::shrug::

I thought Nog was by far better officer material than Wesley. Nog had the stigma of having to be the first Ferengi in Starfleet and had to fight for everything he was given. Wesley received a lot of special favors, had friends in high places, and was even a Traveler.

What was the result? Nog became a battlefieldfield-commissioned Lieutenant JG (I believe without formally graduating). Wesley had to take a make-up exam to enter the Academy, and after receiving a field commission of his own (This smacks of favoritism right there. There was no emergency pending at the time. A battlefield commission? Come on, that's pushing it.) was held back a year for an ethics violation, and never did graduate.

Nog also was a lot more willing to do whatever it took perfect starfleet material more an ex-con :)

But what happens when you attach C-3PO'S head to one of the Trade Federations's battle droids. Then who would win?

What's really amazing is C-3PO is winning this poll even though every time he was in a fight he ended up being at least partially disassembled.

But at least C-3PO has actually been in a fight. Wesley couldn't even hold his own in a heated argument.

I wish Will Wheaton all kinds of luck in his career. :) He's not Wesley. :)

Heard Wesley was supposed to be representing a young Eugene Wesley Roddenberry ??? :)

Anyways, C-3PO wins my vote. He'd ever so politely knock Wesley on his fanny! :)

The Wesley character is one the writers or someone in he concept dept messed up... :) ...could've been interesting...

I have to go with the others, Wesley suffered by bad writing, espcially at a time a character when Wesley wasnt needed, if there had been a real need for a character like him, I think he'd have been more popular...

And as for the fight, sure Wesley couldnt do much, but C-3PO could barely walk, he sort of waddled, push him over, and he'll sign a peace treaty with in over a million different langauges. :) :)

Wesley did have that other plane of existence thing going on he could stop time and stick a plasma grenade in C3PO's butt and thats the end of the fight :)

Uh, in C-3PO's case I don't think that's anatomically possible.

Oh, I agree. The person and the character are two very different things - in all cases. SOMEtimes, I notice an actor's personal traits creeping into their characters, but never vice versa.

I would *want* C3PO to win, but I'm afraid Wesley probably would.

Wow, who knew a Klingon could be a drama critic?

As an actor myself, I tend to disagree ewith our Klingon drama critic: if you (or the actor) are doing continious role your are bound to eventually adopt some of those things that charcter does (Will prolly didnt play Wes Crusher enough for this to happen, though); I was in a British comedy play that we performed many times for just about a year so i was pretty familier with my charcters (the play is "The Attempted Murders of Peggy Sweetwater" if you are wondering) and I found that not only did 'Percey Saunders' take on parts of my chacrter, but when i wasn't being Percey on stage sometimes I took on some of his traits, inlcuding that dang british accent that i still can't get rid of entirely :) . And from what I am told this does happen to a fair amount actors becuase they become so used to portaying that chacter that it just kind of happens.

Another reason time that a actor might turn into the charchter is when actors are type casted (but again I dont think that is true with the issue here) which is where your personality and the charcter's are essentially the same.

But for the most part yeah the actor and charcter are two diiferent people...or at least I really hope I dont act like 'Percy Sauders of the Royal Botanical Gardens of London!' (just imagine that line with a Southern accent thats trying really hard to be British and me in 'croc hunter' gear with a pith helmet on and dorky black glasses tapped togather in the middle :) )

To stay on topic first, I think it's a fair assessment that, thanks mainly to human mobility, Wesley would come out on top, since 3PO can barely move at all :-)

To add to the idea of actors becoming like their characters, in most major theatre groups, the actors will switch roles, ever since the first man to play Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera" went nuts, wearing the cloak and mask all the time. They had to drag him away kicking and screaming. (Literally. He was screaming "I'M THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!" at the top of his voice the whole way out.) So yes, I'd say characters can spill over into the actors that play them.

Don't worry Jcin, we all know it was you being dragged away screaming that you are the Phantom of the Opera. :)

We won't tell though. You're secret is safe with us!

Hmm, in light of this, I feel I need to stop playing some of my online characters! Holy crap, that's a scary thought! I mean, holy cow.

I mean, having an affinity for leather wouldn't be *bad.* Having a weakness for pointed ears won't effect my real life unless I hang out at ST conventions too much, which I don't. But some of the others... Oh man.

I have never acted enough offline to see the effect of roles on real life, but as I think about it, it makes sense. I did notice when I played particularly unpleasant characters online that after a sim, I myself would be in a really crappy mood, lol. I actually had to modify the characters a bit to be less crummy over time.

Thanks for the insight from the real actors. :)

When I was still in college, I was one floor up from Communications/Theatre Arts people. Some of them scared me more than some of the people here scare me. :)

Heck... I think I was scared more often on that floor than wandering around some of the conventions... =X

Is it a bad thing when you have dreams of your character becoming a captain and winning battles because I've had those types of dreams. And they're weird.
