U.S.S. MANTICORE BRIEFING #1368 STARDATE 52606.15

Manticore remains docked at Starbase REDACTED enduring extensive repairs. Meanwhile, two teams have been sent out on crucial missions. Bren, Annika and Pilot have been sent to a civilian research base where they will attempt to retrieve Bren's stolen Ketracel White data. Upon arrival they noticed how eerily empty the facility is. But the amenities are 5-star! Angela Reed has presented Bren with the job of... finishing his own research. Faldek, Harnett and Kansas have been sent to a secret Section 31 station as they attempt to snuff out potential spies within the organization. Faldek and Harnett met with the station commander, Captain Kellerman, who will be working with them to find the spies. They began their investigation, first by looking at the flight craft and now by beginning their interrogations.

I must admit, it's fascinating work. I don't know that I could pass it by. I am slightly concerned that my expertise doesn't cover some of the necessary species' biology or biochemistry, but I think I have some ideas how to approach this problem.

::smiles slightly and looks at his feet::

::monitoring their surroundings and just looking at the computer screen::

::looks up, clears his throat:: Alright, where can we start working? Time waits for no one!

::smiles and stands next to Bren::

The last Agent to see them off would be the Ensign Tabitha Franks. :: takes A PADD from the table...docks it to station next to her :: She gets the meaningless confirming they boarded the shuttle asignments in an effort to get her out of her research lab.

I'll leave you to your work, Doctor. ::nods to Annika and Pilot then walks out the lab::

:: Looks at Lt. Chang, arms crossed :: Lieutenant, do you have any knowledge on why their shuttle would have been scrubbed of all traces of DNA?

Oooh, this lab, I'm pretty sure it had its own beverage synthesizer...

:: overhears a beep indicating a complete file download , ejects the PADD from the Dock and offers it to Commander Faldek and Harnett :: This will tell you their station movements for well years.....and their personal prefernences in the fresher settings. Some files have been redacted for security reasons of course. :: listens ::

::sits down at a console bank and looks at the data which has been provided::

::sits down at a secondary console nearby::

::Glanced in each door as she passes them::

::Stares at the screen for a moment, working out how a chemist would approach this problem, and begins by opening the biochem databank::

:: looks at Harnett briefly and then shows a sly grin :: My My...she is quite thorough. Another task Ensign Franks has is to clean incoming craft for biological anomalies. I never knew she was that thorough.

::at a table closest to the replicators; he studies a padd and then stands in front of the replicator again; he contninues to study it without ordering anything::

I certainly hope she didn't... ::looks at Thomas::

:: Raises an eyebrow :: Indeed, scrubbing DNA from a crime scene should not be allowed...

::Decides to copy one of the data folders, addds "wrkcpy" to the end of the name, then looks up for a second while "accidentally" clicking the original folder, and trying to hit delete::

::opens up some programs to look up the ketracel data::

::is standing guard, so to speak::

::looks down, sees the error message:: Oof, too early to be careless, Chandler. ::clicks on his work copy of the folder and quickly scans through the files, deleting things that don't appear useful or relevant right off::

::reviewing duty rosters on his PADD::

::looks at his PADD with the new data:: So you did not have contact with the Agents before they left or after they departed Deep Space 9?

::walks over to a console and looks at it, trying to decide how to log in to get the info that she neeeds::

::looking thru files as well, recording the useful data::

::looks at Bren:: Everything okay, boss?

Everything's fine, a momentary lapse of attention and a case of, what do they call it, "butter fingers"?

::nods:: ah!

It appears you now know who you need to speak to. Alas, I really enjoy both of your company. Perhaps we could get to know each other better.. :: said with a sly grin ::

:: stops and looks at Faldek :: Not immediately before their departure.

::Brings up the incomplete stolen research on a big screen, with the missing gaps or obvious disjoints highlighted, trying to estimate what portions of the sequence are missing without using his actual knowledge. On another screen he brings up the verrry long molecule structure of Ketracel White::

Of Course. :: taps a panel on the table :: + Franks + Please report to Interrogation Ensign. Your presence is required immediately.

::Cracks his knuckles and takes a deep breath::

:: stands and does a type of Picard Maneuver with her uniform to accentuate her figure :: Am I finished here?

::looks at Thomas like "what the hell?"::

:: Looks at Faldek, eyebrow raised ::

:::Turns the corner::

::browsing through the files, stops and reads some addendums on the file she'd found:: Ooh, interesting! Take a look at this, Dr. Chandler. ::gestures to her screen, at plans on turning the ketracel research back into the highly addictive drug they'd encountered on Duume:: Wonder who made these notes?

::Bren begins a detailed simulation of the process at the beginning of the research, identified by which reactions have the simplest precursors rather than his first-hand knowledge. When he reaches the first gap he looks at the following research, sets up parallel simulations to guess what options could fill in the gap and reasonably lead to the following section. He cuts down the work by using his memory to exclude compound families which are the biggest wastes of time without tipping his hand too much. The lab is solid, it doesn't take long to theorize the first few missing gaps::

:: arrives at the interrogation room, and enters ....she carries her large science PADD with her. She walks to a position across from Faldek and Harnett and remains standing. :: You wanted to see me?

::he presses some buttons on the replicator and a padd materializes; it's unpowered but it's there; Bill seems quite frustrated by this and then recycles it and goes back to thinking::

::looks at not-Annika's screen::

Yes I did, have a seat Ensign.

I assume there are already rumors going around as to there being two Starfleet Black Ops officers aboard, what have you heard?

::Finds a private messaging console for crewmen to talk to family... Pops her black data crystal in for real privacy::

::pulls up some of the other research Annika found, and looks at the steps which the previous attempts used to "fill in the gaps", and compare to his findings. Both looking for ways to improve Chandler's work, his own work and see where the pre-existing samples may have gone wrong::

I saw you arrive, I was behind the towering Commander Smith and Lieutenant Chang. I am often not one who stands out.

I recall seeing you, I am Commander Beran Faldek, and this is Doctor Thomas Harnett, USS Manticore. Would you like to have a representative present from JAG?

::Furrows his brow as another half-dozen gaps are resolved, or at least reduced to a few options each. Either he's better at this than he thought or he is going too fast::

::looks concerned, but is not able to access anything further:: Hm.

::wonders what is going on with the investigation now; gets up from his chair in Ops and heads to his office::

::Sees a red flash on a side monitor, indicating where a previous sample attempt used a synthesis step which falls out of his own simulations' parameters, he studies it a few minutes::

One of my duties onboard this station is I have to clean the shuttles once they return from a mission. Lieutenant Chang takes great pleasure in diverting me from my studies.

::not able to access more of the files she was looking at, as they seem to be locked. She pores over the notes on file though, somewhat concerned:: (edited)

::realizes that the previous researcher(s) misunderstood something -- well, to be fair, Bren miswrote it -- and they began using the wrong fungus. A promising candidate in his notes, but not the correct one::

I don't think the University pays me enough, and maybe I should pursue a second PhD in xenobiochem.

Did you conduct any tricorder scans of the shuttle before scrubbing it?

::to Bren:: Boss, if you do that, does that get me a pay raise?

::looking over Bren's findings:: Interesting. I also found something interesting too, if you wanna look at my screen. Seems there's more to this research than meets the eye.

::she brings up the notes on the plans to making the ketracel into some sort of bio weapon:: Unfortunately, alot of the actual info is locked and I can't access it. But still.

My understanding of shuttle operations is the shuttle is scanned before it arrives. There is always some hair traces, or residual cellular transfers from passengers. My duty is to remove that with the equipment provided for me.

Yes, I can see why they wanted that research.
