Chat room problem?

44 posts in this topic
I have been unable to get connected to the holodeck chat room for the past couple of days. It loads the page with the java applet just fine, but it never connects to the room. Anyone else have this problem?

I used to have that problem, it would take like 5-10 minutes just to load the room. I dunno, it just went away for me.

Hmm... I left it up trying to get in overnight, it never made it. I also tried from another ISP and computer, still wouldn't let me in. No one else is having this problem?

I used to, the first few times I tried to use the room.  The fix for it was one of those things that tech people will tell you has no logical reason for working... but admit they do themselves, 'cuz it does work.   ::):   I left the java window for the room running, and exited the web browser from the file menu -- as opposed to simply closing it as I usually do.  Usually that got rid of the java window, too, but if it stayed up, I ctrl+alt+deleted to bring up the manager and closed it that way.  I was connecting with ethernet at the time, so I kept the connection, but if you're using dial up I'd disconnect.  Wait a couple minutes, retry the process from scratch, new log-in at the site and all.   Worked like a charm, for no reason I could tell.  ::shrug::

Well I tried your suggestion laura, still nothing. I've tried just about everything I can think of. I reinstalled the Java VM, tried from another type of browser (mozilla), and still nothing. The wierd thing is that I can get into the Starfleet Lounge chatroom just fine. The holodeck just never seems to connect.

Hmmmm.... here's my suggestion.

Try to log into the holodeck, and walk away from your comp. If you see the window open, and the gray where the chat room should be, just leave it. Come back in 15 minutes. If it isn't loaded, then your not having the same problem I had. Try it, what have you got to loose?

Well actually, I can tell you right now that it isn't the same problem you had. From what you said, the chat program never actually loaded for you. My problem is that I open up the holodeck, and everything loads like normal. So at this point what I see is the normal chat box, area for list of those in the chat room, and the buttons that are for ignore, chat, etc...

Now instead of going ahead and joining the room, the username and room fields just above the chat box stay blank. Also, when I click on the rooms button, no rooms are listed and it gives me an error saying something about can't get list of rooms.

But anyway, after I post this I'm going to enter the holodeck and go watch TV for a while, just to see...

This sounds like a similar problem that I have run into.  Are you behind any sort of firewall that would prevent you from opening java appelets? Your problem sounds like a Java thing.

I am behind a firewall here at home normally. We have a linksys Firewall/Router/Wireless AP that we use. I tried just plugging directly into our cable modem, by passing the firewall, and I still was unable to enter the holodeck. I've also tried from one other computer using a different ISP, didn't work there either. The applet opens just fine as far as I can tell, it just never connects to the Holodeck. And I can get into the lounge, which runs the same applet.

I tried Kroells' idea, coming in then if it doesn't work exit and come back. That wouldn't seem like it would do anything, but I tried it anyway, about 10 times, still no luck.

Thanks for all the ideas guys (and gals ::):o. I've also noticed that vileromulan has said no one is in the holodeck but him, could these be related in anyway? Has anyone seen anyone else in the holodeck?

try refreshing your browser and the problem could be affiliated with your browser depending what browser you use try updating it maybe it will work then

Do you have Java 2 SDK version 1.4.1_01 on your computer? (used to compile .java files into .class, if anyone here gives a hoot about what it does.) If you do, you might have the same problem I had. Try uninstalling J2SDK, and then reinstalling it, making sure to click the button saying "Do Not Bind with my Microsoft Internet Explorer". Computers don't come with J2SDK..... you have to download it from Sun's website, or Tucows, etc.

If you are like me, you downloaded it, tried to write Java, and realized it was a lot harder than you thought...... and just left it on your computer, waiting to be used again. :)

Also... (I don't really think that this would matter....), but make sure that you have the latest version of whatever browser you use. You might also want to try a different browser than the one you normally use..... just to see if it is in your browser settings, etc.

Do you have any Pop-up blocker tools on your computer? If so, it might be blocking the page load of the Holodeck, which is a pop-up, off of the StarTrek.com website.

I am going to join into this conversation and say that I just tried to launch the Holodeck, and then the Starfleet Lounge, and the page loaded, but nothing happened. The gray backround for the Java-applet isn't even there. It looks as if the Java has been taken off the site..... any scheduled maintanance for it that anyone knows of? I just thought that I would throw this message out there.

Actually, I just figured out earlier that my problem is a Java one. I tried to use another Java applet that I often go to, and it does not show up, either. Anyone know how to fix this?

Yes actually, the problem has changed as of today. Now the applet doesn't even load. I do have the Java SDK installed, just because I installed it to use Sun's java when I started having this problem. I thought it might be a Microsoft thing on my new Tablet PC, something that they had added for pen input or something. No luck in that idea.

And actually, I just tried to get into the lounge, doesn't work there now either. That was working up until today. It does look like they are doing something to it, wonder what? I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0, latest version, what is everyone else using?

Oh, and just so you know, I'm a developer, mainly web stuff (ASP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, Flash, VB, VB.NET, Access Programming), and have worked in the past as a help desk technician (summer job at local university), so I do understand things like the java SDK and such. I know some don't, so it makes sense to try to make sense for those that have no clue what we are talking about. I do it all the time for my mom.  ;)

Hey there,

Well, glancing at the response from the startrek.com chat rooms and looking into it via the administration tool we GM use, I can tell you it appears that PeopleLink (the chat ISP) currently has it's servers shutdown. It's possible they are resetting them, updating software, etc. With any luck it will be corrected sometime in the next few days. ;)

I think it is a PeopleLink problem.  I've tried a couple other non-Star Trek chat rooms that use PeopleLink and they are having the same problem.
