MISSION BRIEF: While a science team conducts a survey of a nearby m class planet, several engineering and medical crews are getting cross trained on doing planetary surveys of an unusual gas giant that has shown some odd readings in the form of vast, ragged shadows.

As we left off, the team was preparing to launch a modified probe as well as make updates to the sensors.

William stood in science, working on making the appropriate modifications to the atmospheric probe.

:: Checking last minute programming :: I think it's ready, at least to what Starfleet thinks they should be.

takes a look Double check the atmosphere shielding configuration.

We should just launch or second guess until the sun rises.

“Aye sir.” William started poking around the shield configuration “Wouldn’t that be a waste of a probe?”

Given it’s a helium based atmosphere, we’ll need to make sure it’s adjusted.

Ensign Reynolds, I believe that would be Commander or Captain Brewster.

She has a running bet with a bunch of us in the society on if anyone would be brave or stupid enough to calm her that to her face.

Smirks Well let’s get this probe launched and do some science!

“How did you engage with the Socratic method?” turning towards Swain “Oh, yes, the purpose we’re all here for. Ensign Reynolds?”

Ens Reynolds> ::cracks knuckles:: Ready when you are.

Launch.

“Send it.”

Ens Reynolds> Aye, sir. ::gets to push the button::

ACTION: The print wooshes off toward the planet

“Probe away sir. Transmissions coming in.”

ACTION: The initial sensor results aren’t unusual and match closely with what the computer expected. However as the probe gets further and towards the area we detected the shadows it begins to send back far from usual results — vast sheets organic material floating amongst the helium

Williams reads over the data sheet. “Sir, initial data is as expected…however, it’s saying that there’s sheets of organic material in the gas.”

Ens Reynolds> ::Watching the readings:: Uhhh, what?

Organic, like carbon based?

looking over the data again “I believe so sir.”

What could that or they be.

“I mean…sheets? Is it likely that it’s not synthetic?”

Possible, but from where? There’s no inhabited planets in this solar system.

“That’s fair, but what organic material naturally comes in sheets?”

Ens Reynolds> Some kind of plant?

Ens Reynolds> Or a floating stingray.

William turned and gave Ensign Reynolds a look. “A floating stingray?”

Ens Reynolds> I mean, it's flat.

Not a bad hypothesis.

They live in the clouds.

Computer, can you provide a render based on the probes data?

Ens Reynolds> Maybe some kind of insect swarm.

“Well, that would be interesting.”

ACTION> The computer begins to render in holographic form several large (think like the size of a house) semi-transparent, roughly circular “objects”

ACTION> They seem to be catching updrafts in the turbulent atmosphere

Anything sentient by chance?

William looked at the holographic rendering, walking around the table to look at it. “Well, that’s certainly something.”

Huh.

Manta rays. In a helium rich atmosphere.

Ens Reynolds> Jelly fish without the tendrils. ::purses lips:: I wonder if the helium makes it easier to float.

“This is like, the third weirdest thing I’ve seen as a crewmember on this ship.”

Possibly. strums chin too bad we can get a sample.

Ens Reynolds> You think they're sentient?

The movement patterns suggest intelligence
